Neither is universally better. Use direct code search first when you know a symbol, string, error, endpoint, or file and need to see the exact matches. Use an AI coding assistant when the question is open-ended and the answer requires connecting several files. For important decisions, combine them: search to establish the evidence, ask the assistant to explain relationships, then verify its explanation against the source files and tests.
What you are comparing
“Code search” and “AI coding assistant” are no longer completely separate categories. A traditional search interaction returns matching lines and lets you navigate to their files. An assistant retrieves project context and synthesizes an explanation. Newer agentic search features can accept a natural-language question, perform searches and code navigation, and return both an answer and the searches or files that informed it. The useful distinction is therefore between an inspectable search-first workflow and an assistant-led search-and-synthesis workflow.
Direct code search
Direct search is a deliberate query for text, symbols, paths, or other repository content. It is strongest when you can name something concrete: PaymentService, an HTTP route, an exception message, a feature flag, or a configuration key. The results expose occurrences for you to inspect, compare, and follow through callers, definitions, tests, and documentation. Code navigation can add “go to definition,” reference lists, and relationship tracing without hiding the underlying files.
Search also gives you an immediate boundary around the evidence. You can see which repository, branch, generated directory, or vendored dependency produced a match and notice when a result is stale or irrelevant. That visibility matters when a question affects a production change.

AI coding assistants
An assistant accepts a natural-language request and uses context supplied by an editor, selected files, a workspace, repository retrieval, or another connected source. It can turn several snippets into a narrative such as “the request enters this controller, is transformed by this service, and is gated by this configuration value.” Sourcegraph describes Cody this way: “Cody answers questions by searching your codebase and retrieving context relevant to your questions.” The statement is a vendor description, not an independent accuracy measurement (Sourcegraph Cody chat documentation).
The synthesis saves you from manually stitching every file together, but generated prose is an interpretation. You still need to inspect the cited context, check control flow, and run or read the relevant tests. An answer can be plausible while omitting a caller, using the wrong branch, or confusing a similarly named symbol.
Where the categories overlap
Sourcegraph’s Deep Search documentation calls its feature “agentic code search.” It describes an agent that uses Code Search and Code Navigation to explore a repository and returns a list of searches and files that contributed to the response (Sourcegraph Deep Search documentation). That model combines the convenience of a natural-language question with an evidence trail. When evaluating a tool, ask whether it lets you inspect the same searches and files you would have found manually.
Choose the first move by the question you have
The wording of your question is a better predictor of the right starting point than the product name. Use this table as a triage guide.
| Question or task | Start with | Reason | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
Where is InvoiceBuilder defined? |
Direct search | An exact symbol query quickly exposes definitions and references. | Confirm the result is the active branch and not generated or test-only code. |
| Which code handles a specific error message? | Direct search | The literal text often leads straight to logging, mapping, or retry logic. | Follow the caller and determine whether the message is transformed before display. |
| How does authentication work across middleware, services, and configuration? | Assistant after an initial search | The answer spans files and requires a coherent explanation. | Open every file named by the assistant and trace success and failure paths. |
| Why does this endpoint return a 403 in one environment? | Search plus assistant | Search locates the route, policy, and environment keys; synthesis helps connect them. | Check deployed configuration, feature flags, and the exact branch or commit. |
| What changed in an unfamiliar repository? | Search and navigation, optionally agentic search | Discovery requires a map of directories, entry points, and recent references. | Confirm the tool searched the repositories and branches relevant to your change. |
| Is it safe to change a validation rule? | Underlying files and tests; assistant as a guide | Consequential claims need primary evidence, not only a summary. | Read callers, tests, configuration, migrations, and runtime documentation. |
When you know an exact token
Search the symbol, string, route, or error first. Inspect the definition and references before asking for an explanation. This prevents an assistant from guessing which of several similarly named components you mean and gives you a compact set of files to place in context.
When the answer is a cross-file behavior
Use the assistant to organize evidence from the files you found. Ask it to name each file, symbol, and condition it relied on. A useful prompt is: “Explain the request path from POST /orders to persistence. List every file and function you used, identify authorization checks, and distinguish observed code from inference.” Treat the resulting explanation as a reading plan, not as proof.

When the repository is new to you
Begin with broad searches for entry points, build files, route declarations, and configuration keys. An agentic search feature can iterate through those queries and return a source list, but check its scope first: a tool may omit a repository, branch, submodule, ignored file, or generated artifact that matters to your question.
When the claim could cause damage
For security, data-loss, billing, migration, and production-configuration decisions, prefer source code, tests, and operational documentation. An assistant can point you toward the relevant control flow; it cannot establish that the explanation is complete or that the deployed system matches the checked-out files.
A search-first, assistant-second workflow
This six-step process gives you the speed of synthesis without surrendering traceability.
- Define the scope. Select the repository, branch or commit, language filters, and relevant directories. Note whether generated code, submodules, or ignored files are included.
- Run a narrow search. Search the exact symbol, route, error text, configuration key, or distinctive phrase. Record the matching file paths and line ranges.
- Expand through navigation. Open the definition, callers, implementations, tests, and configuration references. Remove false positives and note any similarly named symbols.
- Ask for synthesis. Give the assistant the question and the files or symbols you established. Require a file-and-symbol list, assumptions, and separate labels for direct evidence versus inference.
- Verify every material statement. Open the cited files, follow branches and conditions, and compare the explanation with tests, schemas, and runtime configuration. If the assistant names a file you cannot find, treat that as an unresolved error.
- Capture the answer’s boundary. Record the commit or branch, files checked, and remaining uncertainty in the issue, review, or investigation note. This makes the result reproducible when the repository changes.
What makes one workflow better for a particular team?
Compare tools and habits on dimensions that affect the answer, not just how impressive the chat interface feels.
| Criterion | Questions to ask | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Query type | Are most requests exact-text lookups, or open-ended “how does this work?” investigations? | Exact queries reward visible matches; open questions benefit from synthesis. |
| Scope and freshness | Which repositories, branches, commits, permissions, and uncommitted changes are searched? | An eloquent answer from the wrong snapshot is still wrong. |
| Traceability | Can you open matching lines, file paths, searches, and the source material behind an answer? | Visible evidence lets another developer reproduce and challenge the conclusion. |
| Cross-file reasoning | Can the workflow connect definitions, callers, configuration, documentation, and tests? | Many behavioral questions cannot be answered from one match. |
| Workflow fit | Does it work where your team edits code—your IDE, hosting platform, or command line—and respect existing navigation habits? | Friction determines whether developers use the tool consistently. |
| Data handling and governance | What context is transmitted, retained, used for training, or covered by your organization’s contract? | Repository content may contain credentials, personal data, or regulated logic. |
| Cost and limits | What usage is included, what is capped, and what incurs credits or overages? | A workflow that works in a trial may not fit a team-wide budget. |
These criteria reflect documented product behavior from Sourcegraph and GitHub, not an independent ranking (Cody documentation; Deep Search documentation; GitHub Copilot product page).
Accuracy, trust, and common failure modes
An assistant can omit relevant context
Retrieval is selective. A response may include the implementation but miss a feature flag, caller, generated schema, test fixture, or deployment override. Require file paths and inspect the omissions yourself. If the tool cannot show what it read, lower your confidence for any claim that spans multiple components.

Search can return technically correct but irrelevant matches
A lexical match may be a comment, fixture, deprecated implementation, vendored dependency, or generated file. Filter by path and language, then use navigation and version control to establish which occurrence is live. Exact search is evidence of presence, not evidence that the code executes.
Repository and branch scope can be stale
Before trusting either workflow, check the indexed commit or workspace state. Compare a result with the current file, open pull request, or deployment revision. For an incident, search the exact revision running in production rather than the default branch.
Natural-language certainty can hide an inference
Ask the assistant to quote or link the relevant symbols and to mark assumptions. Then test the claim against control flow and automated tests. A generated explanation is useful for deciding what to read next; it is not a substitute for that reading.

How current tools implement these workflows
Sourcegraph Cody
Sourcegraph says Cody retrieves relevant codebase context through native and keyword search and identifies the files it read in its response (Cody chat documentation). That visible file trail is useful when you want an assistant’s explanation but still need to audit the evidence. Use it to ask relationship questions, then open the listed files and check whether the retrieved context is complete.
Sourcegraph Deep Search
Deep Search is documented as an agentic code-search feature that iteratively uses Code Search and Code Navigation. Its answer includes the searches and files that contributed, which makes the search-and-synthesis process more inspectable (Deep Search documentation). The documentation says it is available on the web for Enterprise Starter and Enterprise plans and is not supported for BYOK customers; eligibility and plan terms can change, so verify them before adopting it.
GitHub Copilot
GitHub says IDE chat can use the active document, the current selection, and workspace information. Its GitHub.com chat can use prior prompts, open pages, and retrieved codebase or Bing context (GitHub Copilot product page). Those contexts are helpful only when they include the branch and files relevant to your question; explicitly name the files or ask the assistant to list them.

Keep that statement limited to those named plans and confirm the current policy and terms. Do not infer the same treatment for organizational plans or for another vendor.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cost and operational requirements beyond the sticker price
A search-first workflow may already be covered by your source-hosting or development platform, while assistant usage can be limited by requests, premium models, seats, or credits. Before rollout, document the included allowance, overage behavior, administrator controls, and whether indexing private repositories requires a particular edition. For regulated or proprietary code, involve security and legal reviewers before enabling external retrieval.
Also budget for human verification. If an assistant saves ten minutes of navigation but adds an unchecked defect, the apparent productivity gain is negative. Measure adoption with your own tasks and review outcomes; the available product pages establish features, not a universal return-on-investment figure.

Practical patterns for large or unfamiliar repositories
Build a map before asking for a narrative
Search for package manifests, application entry points, route declarations, dependency-injection setup, and configuration loading. Then search the business symbol or endpoint. Supplying this map to an assistant reduces the chance that it anchors on a similarly named test or library.

Separate discovery from explanation
Use one pass to collect candidate files and another to explain the behavior. Keep the candidate list, even when you later discard entries. This separation makes it obvious whether a wrong answer came from poor retrieval or from incorrect reasoning over the right files.
Use tests as executable evidence
After reading the assistant’s explanation, locate unit, integration, and end-to-end tests for the same symbols. A test may reveal defaults, error handling, or environment assumptions that comments and prose omit. If no test covers the claimed path, label the behavior as unverified rather than treating the assistant’s confidence as coverage.
Troubleshooting when the answer is poor
The assistant cites irrelevant files
- State the exact repository, branch, and symbol in a new prompt.
- Provide the known definition and one confirmed caller.
- Ask for a constrained explanation using only named files, with citations to symbols.
- Run direct searches for the missing configuration keys, feature flags, or alternate implementations.
Search returns too many matches
- Use a longer distinctive phrase or a symbol-qualified query.
- Filter by repository, path, language, and file extension.
- Exclude generated, vendor, build, and fixture directories when they are not part of runtime behavior.
- Search references after finding the definition rather than scanning every textual occurrence.
The tools disagree
Compare their repository and revision scope first. Open the exact lines each tool used, then inspect callers, tests, and configuration. If one answer relies on an inaccessible or stale file, discard that premise. When disagreement remains, report the competing interpretations and the evidence still needed instead of choosing the more fluent answer.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—prove
There is no controlled, independent comparison in the cited material that measures code-search versus AI-assistant answer accuracy, time to answer, or developer productivity for repository questions. Vendor documentation explains how particular products retrieve context and expose sources; it does not establish that generated answers are always correct or that one workflow is faster for every team.
A 2026 paper, Comparing AI Coding Agents: A Task-Stratified Analysis of Pull Request Acceptance, analyzed 7,156 pull requests involving five AI coding agents. It reports that task type affects acceptance, with 82.1% acceptance for documentation tasks and 66.1% for new-feature tasks in its dataset (arXiv paper, 2026). Those figures describe sampled agent-generated pull requests, not a controlled comparison of code search with assistant answers, so they cannot determine which approach you should use to find repository information.
A concise decision rule
- Known token, location, or error: search first and inspect the matches.
- Several files and an explanatory question: search enough to establish scope, then ask an assistant to synthesize with file and symbol citations.
- Large or unfamiliar codebase: use navigation or agentic search to discover candidates, and verify repository and branch coverage.
- Security or production consequence: treat the assistant as a guide; make source code, tests, and deployed configuration the authority.
- Team adoption: compare traceability, freshness, governance, workflow fit, and total cost rather than choosing by chat quality alone.
The practical winner is usually a disciplined combination: direct search supplies inspectable evidence, while an assistant reduces the effort of connecting that evidence into an explanation. Keep the source files and revision that support the answer, and the choice remains defensible when the code changes.
