An AI coding assistant is software that uses artificial intelligence and programming context to help with development. Depending on its mode and permissions, it may suggest code as you type, answer questions in chat, explain code, or take on a broader task by inspecting repository files, running commands, and editing multiple files. The term describes a range of capabilities—not one fixed level of autonomy.
What does an AI coding assistant do?
It helps with programming work by using a request and some available coding context to generate suggestions or take actions. The context might include the active file, selected code, or information about a project, but access varies by product, feature, and configuration.
GitHub describes Copilot IDE chat as combining a user’s request with context such as the active file, selected code, and workspace information—including languages, frameworks, and dependencies. GitHub characterizes generation as a probabilistic determination of what is likely to come next. That is one documented product example, not a universal description of how every assistant works. What are the main kinds of coding assistance?
Inline code completion
The assistant suggests likely code near the cursor, using programming context available to that feature. The developer can review, accept, modify, or ignore the suggestion.

Chat assistance
A chat interface lets a developer ask questions or make requests in natural language. Depending on the tool and its access, it may use the active file, selected code, or broader workspace details to explain code, suggest an approach, or help investigate an issue.
Agentic coding
A coding agent can be assigned a higher-level task and may inspect repository files, run commands, and make changes across multiple files. Some agents also work asynchronously and return changes for review. Anthropic describes Claude Code as a terminal agent with these capabilities and notes that it also has IDE extensions. These modes can coexist in one product. A tool that offers inline completion does not necessarily have permission to run commands or edit a project; assess the specific mode and permissions rather than inferring autonomy from the category name.
How is an AI coding assistant different from a coding agent?
“AI coding assistant” is the broader category. It includes tools that only offer suggestions or chat as well as tools with agentic features. “Coding agent” usually refers to a mode that can pursue a task through actions such as examining files, running commands, or changing code. The practical distinction is what the tool can do—not simply what the product is called.

For example, GitHub documents Copilot features across editors and terminals, including completion, chat, and agent capabilities. It also documents third-party agents, including Anthropic Claude and OpenAI Codex, that can work asynchronously on tasks and create pull requests. GitHub Docs: About third-party coding agents
What should you check before choosing one?
- Workflow and autonomy: Does it offer inline suggestions, chat, task execution, or some combination? What actions can it take without your direct intervention?
- Where it runs: Check whether it works in your IDE, terminal, web interface, or an asynchronous cloud workflow.
- Context and integrations: Find out which repository material and tools it can access, and whether you can control that access.
- Compatibility: Confirm support for your editor, terminal, languages, and platforms.
- Governance and privacy: Review the product’s current data-handling documentation and the policy controls available to your organization and configuration. Do not assume that products handle code or retain data in the same way.
- Review and cost: Plan how generated changes will be checked, and verify current usage limits and charges. For example, GitHub says its coding-agent sessions consume GitHub Actions minutes and AI credits based on the model and tokens processed; that usage detail is specific to GitHub’s service. Do AI coding assistants produce reliable code?
Generated code and agent-made changes need appropriate human review. A fluent explanation or a change that appears to work is not, by itself, proof that the code is correct, secure, compatible with the project, or complete. Review the proposed changes and use the checks appropriate to the project before relying on them.

Productivity statements should also be read in context. GitHub’s product page reports “up to 55% more productive at writing code” and “up to 75% higher satisfaction with their jobs.” These are GitHub’s vendor claims, not independent comparative findings, and “up to” should not be read as a result guaranteed for every developer or tool.
