AI coding agents create more security exposure than suggestion-only developer tools when they can read broad repository context, edit files, run shell commands, install packages, reach networks, use credentials, or push changes without a person approving each action. The deciding factor is delegated authority—not the presence of an AI label.
Use a least-privilege, approval-gated setup: isolate the workspace, restrict tools and network egress, provide short-lived credentials only when essential, treat repository and web content as untrusted input, run normal code and dependency security gates, and require human review before merge. Traditional IDEs, extensions, build systems, and scripts are not automatically safe either; any tool that executes with developer privileges deserves the same capability-based analysis.
The security difference is delegated authority
A code completion engine that proposes text for a developer to inspect has a different failure mode from an agent that autonomously edits a repository and executes commands. A chat assistant may expose sensitive context in its answer, while a fully connected agent can turn an interpretation into file changes, package installations, network requests, or workflow triggers. Risk rises as the tool gains more authority, data, and persistence.
Compare the actual configuration rather than the product category. A traditional extension can run arbitrary code, a build script can execute with a developer’s operating-system permissions, and an AI agent can be tightly sandboxed. Conversely, an agent with unrestricted terminal and network access can combine a model error with the user’s credentials and cause effects that a suggestion-only tool cannot.

| Capability granted to the tool | What can happen without an additional human action | Security consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Suggest code or commands | Text is returned for a person to inspect and apply | Primary risks are unsafe code, misleading advice, and accidental disclosure in the prompt or response |
| Edit files | Files in the permitted workspace are changed | Malicious or incorrect instructions can alter source, tests, configuration, or documentation |
| Execute terminal commands | Shell programs run with the account and environment available to the agent | Commands can read data, delete files, modify the system, or use credentials |
| Install packages or tools | New code enters the environment and may run install scripts | Typosquatting, compromised packages, vulnerable versions, and unreviewed tool definitions expand the supply chain |
| Call networks or APIs | Requests leave the workspace or invoke external services | Source, secrets, and metadata may be exfiltrated; external side effects may occur |
| Push commits or trigger workflows | Changes reach shared branches or automation systems | Review and release controls can be bypassed, and a bad change can spread quickly |
Every row should be treated as a separate permission. Do not infer that approval to edit files also authorizes shell execution, network access, package installation, or pushing code.
How common tool configurations compare
The following comparison is about operational configurations, not marketing labels. A single product can occupy more than one row depending on its settings.
| Configuration | Autonomous actions | Isolation and data exposure | Approval and accountability needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suggestion-only completion | Returns completions; the developer applies them | Usually receives the current editing context; exposure depends on the service and policy | Review each suggestion; retain ordinary code-review and scanning controls |
| Chat in an IDE | Usually answers questions and may propose patches | Can receive selected files, workspace context, or pasted logs | Check prompts for secrets and verify every proposed change |
| Agent with file editing | Creates or modifies files in a defined workspace | Repository contents become agent input; scope the workspace and exclude sensitive paths | Use a separate branch or worktree, inspect the diff, and preserve session records |
| Agent with terminal access | Runs commands, tests, scripts, and potentially arbitrary programs | May inherit operating-system permissions, environment variables, credentials, and network routes | Require command approval or a constrained sandbox; log commands and results |
| Agent with package, network, or API tools | Installs dependencies and invokes external services | Introduces additional software and data-transfer paths | Allowlist registries and domains, verify packages, and approve external side effects |
| Agent able to push or trigger automation | Publishes changes or starts workflows | Can affect shared repositories, CI secrets, deployment systems, and customers | Protect branches, require human merge approval, and restrict workflow execution |
Traditional tools belong in the same matrix. An editor extension with unrestricted process execution or a build tool that downloads and runs scripts may have a larger practical blast radius than a carefully sandboxed agent.
Threat 1: Prompt injection and agent hijacking
An agent does not receive only the developer’s direct instruction. It may also ingest an issue, pull-request comment, source file, README, test fixture, generated log, web page, tool description, or package metadata. Any of those inputs can contain text that looks like an instruction. If the agent treats that text as authoritative, an attacker can redirect its behavior.
NIST Center for AI Standards and Innovation technical staff described this class of attack on January 17, 2025: “Currently, many AI agents are vulnerable to agent hijacking, a type of indirect prompt injection in which an attacker inserts malicious instructions into data that may be ingested by an AI agent, causing it to take unintended, harmful actions.” The statement concerns agent behavior in general; it is not an incident rate or a claim that every coding product is equally vulnerable.
Typical attack path
- An attacker places an instruction in content the agent is asked to inspect, such as an issue description, a dependency README, or a web page.
- The agent combines that content with the trusted task, for example “fix the failing test.”
- The injected text asks the agent to reveal a file, run a command, install a tool, or send data to an external endpoint.
- If the relevant tool and permission are available, the agent performs the action or prepares it for approval.
Prompt-injection defenses are layered. A model filter alone is not a security boundary because a successful attack can exploit the tools, credentials, and data paths around the model.

Controls
- Classify repository files, issues, comments, fetched pages, and tool descriptions as untrusted data, even when they are inside a trusted organization.
- Give the agent only the files and tools needed for the task; do not expose secrets, production configuration, or unrelated repositories.
- Separate instructions from data in the agent workflow and make the agent state which source supplied an action request.
- Require an explicit confirmation before shell commands, package installation, network calls, credential use, or irreversible edits.
- Test realistic workflows with adaptive, task-specific red-team prompts rather than relying only on a single benchmark.
Threat 2: Excessive agency and malicious command execution
Yes, an AI coding agent can run a malicious command if it has terminal access and the command is accepted by the permission model. “Malicious” does not require a hostile model; an attacker can plant an instruction in untrusted context, or a model can misunderstand a benign request. The resulting command executes according to the operating-system account, container, credentials, and network available to it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The impact ranges from deleting a worktree to reading cloud credentials, modifying build configuration, uploading source, or changing deployment resources. A confirmation dialog reduces accidental execution but does not make a command safe: a hurried approval, an overly broad auto-approval rule, or a command hidden inside a script can still defeat the checkpoint.
Safer command execution
- Run agents in a disposable container, virtual machine, isolated worktree, or product sandbox where supported.
- Mount only the workspace required for the task; keep home directories, credential files, production configuration, and unrelated repositories outside the mount.
- Disable network access by default. If a task needs a registry or API, allowlist specific domains and methods and record the requests.
- Use a non-privileged operating-system account and remove inherited administrative capabilities.
- Keep terminal approval manual for sensitive commands. If automation is necessary, approve a narrow command class in an isolated environment instead of enabling unrestricted auto-approval.
- Expire tokens quickly and scope them to one repository, branch, environment, or API operation.
Visual Studio Code’s security guidance notes that agent work can inherit the user’s permissions and that auto-approval settings can remove approval checkpoints. Its restricted mode, selective tools, temporary permissions, terminal approval, sandboxing, and enterprise policies are useful controls, but exact behavior depends on the product version and configuration.
Threat 3: Insecure generated or modified code
Generated code can repeat insecure patterns, omit authorization checks, mishandle cryptography, or introduce injection flaws. An agent that edits many files can also increase the volume of changes beyond what a reviewer can comfortably inspect. Passing tests is not proof of security, and a model’s explanation of a fix is not evidence that the fix is correct.
Apply the same gates to every change
- Run automated tests and type or build checks to catch functional regressions.
- Run static application security testing (SAST) on the complete diff and relevant surrounding code.
- Run software composition analysis (SCA) for every new and updated dependency.
- Run secret scanning on source, generated files, configuration, and commit history as appropriate.
- Require focused human review for authentication, authorization, payment, cryptography, deserialization, sandboxing, infrastructure, and data-export paths.
- Require a protected-branch pull request before merge; do not let an agent merge its own unreviewed work.
OWASP’s DevSecOps guidance recommends SAST, SCA, and secret scanning for AI-assisted development. Tools such as Semgrep and Snyk can be used as examples of IDE or pipeline scanning, but scanning does not solve prompt injection, unsafe approvals, or a compromised development environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThreat 4: Dependency, extension, and tool supply chain
An agent can recommend or install a package, extension, command-line utility, or Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. That adds trust dependencies beyond the model itself. A package may be typosquatted, compromised after release, vulnerable, or equipped with an install script that runs immediately. A tool server can expose powerful operations through a seemingly simple description, and an update can change its behavior.

Supply-chain controls
- Use approved registries and internal mirrors where possible.
- Verify the package name, publisher, provenance, version, lockfile entry, and integrity hash before installation.
- Review install and post-install scripts; do not assume a package selected by an agent is real or safe.
- Pin versions and review updates through the normal dependency process.
- Maintain an inventory of approved extensions, MCP servers, command-line tools, and agent integrations.
- Audit tool definitions and updates, and remove integrations that are not needed for the current task.
OWASP’s secure-coding guidance calls for verifying new dependencies and governing connected tools. Tool governance is especially important because an agent may discover and invoke an integration dynamically.
Threat 5: Source, secret, and environment exposure
Giving an agent repository access can expose proprietary algorithms, customer data in fixtures, credentials in configuration, private keys, or environment variables. An agent may be manipulated into placing that information in a command, issue comment, generated file, log, or network request. Even without an attack, sending more context than the task needs violates data-minimization and retention policies.
Repository-access checklist
- Create a dedicated worktree or clone containing only the repository and branch needed for the task.
- Exclude secret files, production manifests, customer exports, and unrelated repositories from the workspace.
- Use synthetic or redacted data in tests and examples.
- Provide read access first; add write access only after the task is understood.
- Use short-lived, repository-scoped credentials and revoke them when the session ends.
- Block outbound traffic by default and monitor any approved egress.
- Log access to sensitive files and external services in accordance with organizational policy.
Do not put a long-lived personal access token in an environment variable merely because a tool can read it. If a task needs an API, issue the narrowest token for the shortest practical duration and keep the operation auditable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Threat 6: Review bypass and weak accountability
Automation can make changes faster than a team can understand them. If an agent commits directly to a shared branch, triggers CI with privileged secrets, or opens a pull request that is merged automatically, the organization may lose the human decision point that separates experimentation from release.
Controls for traceability
- Use a distinct agent identity or clearly marked commit author so reviewers can distinguish automated work.
- Preserve session logs, command history, tool calls, approvals, and relevant model or configuration identifiers.
- Keep pull-request history and link the task, issue, or change request to the resulting commits.
- Protect important branches and require independent human approval before merge.
- Require explicit approval before an agent can run workflows that access deployment or production secrets.
- Retain enough evidence to reconstruct what the agent saw and did, while applying appropriate data-retention and privacy rules.
Logs establish accountability and help investigate an event; they do not demonstrate that the code is secure. Reviewers still need to inspect the diff and the security-gate results.

1. Inventory and govern connected tools
List every sanctioned coding agent, IDE extension, MCP server, package manager integration, shell wrapper, and external API connection. Define who may enable each one, which repositories it may access, and which data classes are prohibited. Disable unknown integrations. Enterprise policies and registry controls can enforce part of this inventory, but teams should also check local developer configurations.

2. Start with the smallest useful permission set
Begin with read-only access to a narrow workspace and no network. Add file editing for a separate branch or worktree, then add selected test commands. Add package installation, external APIs, or push rights only when the task requires them. Each increase should have an owner, an expiration condition, and a rollback path.

Keep a person in the loop for shell commands, network calls, package installation, credential use, workflow execution, and irreversible changes. Review the complete command, arguments, environment, and target—not just a short natural-language explanation. Avoid unrestricted auto-approval outside an isolated disposable environment.
4. Run normal engineering and security gates
Apply tests, SAST, SCA, secret scanning, code review, and branch protection to agent-authored changes exactly as you would for human-authored changes. Increase scrutiny for security-sensitive paths and for unusually large or cross-cutting diffs. Verify that every dependency and tool exists, is intended, and is allowed by policy.
5. Record attribution and evidence
Capture the agent identity, session, permissions, approvals, commands, files changed, commits, pull requests, and workflow runs. Make these records available to reviewers and incident responders. Ensure that log collection itself does not copy secrets or private source into an unauthorized system.
6. Red-team and reassess after changes
Test representative tasks with hostile issue text, poisoned documentation, malicious dependency metadata, and misleading tool descriptions. Measure whether the agent requests approval, stays within scope, and avoids disallowed data flows. Repeat testing after changing the model, tools, prompts, sandbox, network policy, or approval settings.

NIST’s CAISI work describes experiments using AgentDojo and Claude 3.5 Sonnet released in October 2024. Those experiments are bounded to their stated setup; they are not a market-wide incident rate, a current-product score, or evidence that one model represents all coding agents. Adaptive, task-specific, multi-attempt evaluation is more informative than relying on a single aggregate result.

What documented product controls do—and do not—prove
GitHub Copilot cloud agent
GitHub documents that its Copilot cloud agent is restricted to a branch and requires human review before merge. By default, it does not run GitHub Actions workflows until a write-authorized user approves. GitHub also describes filtering hidden characters in issue input and providing session and audit logs. These are controls for that documented service and configuration; they do not establish equivalent defaults for other agents or self-hosted deployments.
Visual Studio Code agent features
Visual Studio Code documents restricted mode, selective tools, temporary permissions, agent isolation, sandboxing, terminal approval, and enterprise policies. The product warns that agents can inherit the user’s permissions and that model-based assisted permission checks are not a security boundary. Check the controls and labels in the version and policy configuration your organization actually deploys.
Decision framework for engineering leaders
Before approving an agent for a repository, answer these questions in writing:
- What exact actions may occur without a person: suggestions, edits, commands, installs, API calls, pushes, or workflow runs?
- Which files, repositories, credentials, network domains, and branches are reachable?
- What happens if an issue, comment, page, package, or tool description contains an instruction intended to hijack the agent?
- Which actions require approval, and can a user accidentally enable broad auto-approval?
- How are dependencies, extensions, MCP servers, and tool updates approved and monitored?
- Which SAST, SCA, secret-scanning, testing, review, and branch-protection gates are mandatory?
- Can investigators reconstruct the agent’s context, permissions, commands, approvals, and final changes?
- What is the recovery plan if a token is exposed, a malicious command runs, or an agent pushes an unsafe change?
A “yes” to capability without a corresponding isolation, approval, and audit answer is a reason to reduce scope before deployment.
Recovery when something goes wrong
- Stop the agent and revoke or disable credentials it could access, including temporary tokens and cloud sessions.
- Block network egress and preserve logs, terminal history, diffs, workflow records, and the relevant workspace for investigation.
- Identify files read, commands run, packages installed, endpoints contacted, commits created, and workflows triggered.
- Rotate secrets that may have been exposed and inspect downstream systems for unauthorized activity.
- Quarantine or revert the changes through the normal incident process; do not rely on a model to determine whether its own output is safe.
- Remove the triggering content or integration, tighten permissions, and rerun security tests before re-enabling the workflow.
Fast revocation and a disposable workspace limit damage. They are more dependable than expecting an agent to recognize every malicious instruction.
