There is no single reset clock for AI coding agents. Depending on the product, you may have hit a short session window, a weekly limit, monthly credits, a billing-cycle usage pool, or the conversation’s context capacity. Check the product’s own usage screen or limit notice: the timestamp shown for your account is more useful than a general estimate.
First, identify what ran out
A limit message can describe different constraints, and each has a different remedy. A context limit is not the same as a usage allowance: reducing or compacting conversation history can make room for more context, but it does not replenish quota.
- Session or time-window limit: Usage is restricted for a defined period, such as a five-hour session or another token-based window. Access returns when that window resets, unless the product offers a separate reset option.
- Weekly limit: The allowance renews on a weekly schedule. A promotional reset may affect that schedule, so check the offer’s terms rather than assuming it only adds temporary capacity.
- Monthly credits or billing-cycle pool: Usage becomes available again at the next monthly cycle or plan billing date. Some products offer paid overage or a plan change instead of requiring you to wait.
- Context capacity: The current conversation has reached the amount of material the model can handle at once. Starting a fresh conversation or using a context-management feature may help, but neither action resets a separate usage meter.
Read the exact wording of the notice before changing settings or waiting. A monthly credit balance and a time-window guardrail can coexist, so one showing remaining usage does not prove the other is clear.

How the reset models differ

These are different meters, not interchangeable quotas. Comparing raw request counts across providers is misleading unless the model, task, token consumption, plan, and billing rules also match.

What to expect from each service
OpenAI Codex
Codex users may encounter both five-hour and weekly usage windows. After a limit is reached, an active turn may still finish, subject to fair-use limits; the usage page or limit banner then shows account-specific options, which can include using credits, an available reset, upgrading, or waiting. OpenAI says support does not reset usage limits.
Some accounts may have a one-time reset, offered either as a banked reset that the user applies or as an automatic/global reset. Availability, affected limits, redemption, and expiry depend on the offer, plan, workspace, and region. Applying a full banked reset refreshes eligible five-hour and weekly windows and changes the weekly reset date. It is promotional, not a permanent increase to plan limits.
Claude and Claude Code
Claude usage is shared across claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Desktop. Conversation length and complexity, features, model, and effort level can affect usage. Anthropic also offers optional resets that can immediately restore either a five-hour session limit or a weekly limit when redeemed. That reset is not an extra credit balance, cannot be undone, and may expire; ordinary weekly limits still follow their usual schedule.

Redeem an available reset in Claude web or Claude Desktop. The reset button is not currently available in Claude Mobile or the Claude Code terminal or IDE interface. In Claude Code, the sign-in method also matters: an Enterprise seat’s included pool uses a rolling window, while an API key is billed per token to the relevant Console or cloud account. Anthropic’s table describes API-key use as pay-as-you-go without the hard stop described for the seat pool.
Claude Code’s /compact command and automatic compaction manage conversation context. They do not reset usage; conversations that trigger automatic context management still consume usage.

GitHub Copilot
GitHub describes monthly AI Credit allowances across plans. One credit equals $0.01 USD. Chat, agents, CLI, and Spaces use credits; code completions and next-edit suggestions do not use credits and remain unlimited on paid plans. When the monthly allowance is exhausted, the listed choices include waiting for the next cycle, setting a dollar budget for paid usage, or switching to a less expensive model. Organization administrators control additional paid use for Business and Enterprise.
Do not treat the monthly allowance as Copilot’s only meter. GitHub’s April 2026 announcement for Individual plans distinguishes premium-request entitlements from token-based limits for a time window. A user may still have premium requests remaining and nevertheless hit a usage limit, in which case the session limit requires waiting for that window to reset. The client notice can show the reset date and time.

Visual Studio’s guidance applies to Visual Studio 2022 version 17.14 and later, and Visual Studio 2026; labels and actions vary by plan and version. It distinguishes monthly plan usage from the conversation capacity of the current chat thread. Free completions have a separate monthly allowance.
Cursor
Cursor documents separate monthly usage pools for its own models and third-party models, with availability depending on plan. Included usage renews with the billing cycle and does not roll over. When it runs out, on-demand usage or an upgrade may be available, depending on the account and settings. Check the Spending tab for the reset date and the dashboard to distinguish included from on-demand usage.
On-demand use depends on plan and settings, and spending limits can be configured. Enforcement is not instant, so usage may briefly exceed a spending limit before the service recognizes it.

- Read the limit notice. Note whether it names context, a session, a weekly window, monthly credits, a token limit, or a billing cycle.
- Open the provider’s usage screen. Check the account or workspace currently in use and record the reset date and time shown there. For Claude, open Settings > Usage; for Cursor, open the Spending tab. Codex uses its usage page or limit banner, while Copilot shows usage in settings and may show the limit in the client.
- Check for shared usage. Claude pools usage across its web, desktop, and coding surfaces. Copilot credits can also be pooled in some organization plans. Activity elsewhere may therefore affect the balance you see.
- Choose the remedy that matches the meter. Depending on the product and account, the options may be waiting, changing models, paying for overage, upgrading, or redeeming an available one-time reset. Check an offer’s eligibility and expiry before applying it.
- If access does not return at the displayed time, verify the account and workspace, refresh the usage page, and contact the provider if the issue appears to be an accounting or access problem.
Why a limit can persist after you think it reset
- You are watching the wrong meter. A monthly balance can remain while a separate session or token window is exhausted.
- The reset schedule changed. A full banked Codex reset changes the weekly reset date; a promotional reset may also have an expiry or redemption condition.
- Another product surface or shared pool used the allowance. This is especially relevant when usage is shared across apps or pooled within an organization.
- The issue is context, not quota. A conversation may be too long even when the usage allowance is available. Context management addresses that conversation constraint, not the usage balance.
- The dashboard and usage enforcement have not updated together. Cursor says spending-limit enforcement is not instant, so a brief overage can occur.
Vendor plan terms, UI labels, allowances, and reset offers can change. The product’s account-specific usage display is the authoritative place to confirm the next reset for your plan and workspace.
