“Private” and “adult” are separate claims. A private chat mode may hide a conversation from your history, stop it from creating memory, or exclude it from model-improvement use, yet still permit short-term retention or safety review. Adult eligibility may unlock normal chat access without permitting every form of explicit roleplay. Compare each service on history and deletion, memory, model improvement, retention and safety review, age assurance, and content limits before sharing sensitive information.
What a private or adult chat mode actually changes
Chatbot providers use “private,” “incognito,” “temporary,” and “adult” to describe different controls. Treat each word as a feature label, not a confidentiality guarantee.
History and deletion
History controls determine whether a conversation appears in the account’s chat list and whether you can later reopen it. Hiding a chat from the interface does not necessarily erase provider copies. Deletion terms can also differ between ordinary chats and temporary modes, so check the service’s current retention statement rather than assuming that a hidden conversation is gone.

Memory
Some assistants maintain a separate memory layer that can influence future replies. A mode that does not create or update memories is more private for personalization, but it does not by itself prevent the current conversation from being retained for security or abuse prevention.

Model improvement
“Not used for training” generally means the provider will not use that conversation to improve its models under the stated setting. It does not mean the message is never processed by automated filters, service providers, or a human safety team when a policy issue is detected. Also distinguish a conversation-level mode from an account-level opt-out: an account switch may cover new chats while leaving old chats in history.
Retention and safety review
Providers may keep temporary copies to investigate abuse, fraud, or security incidents. A system can therefore be excluded from routine model improvement and still be retained or examined after an automated safety flag. The practical question is not “Can anyone see it?” but “For what purposes, by whom, and for how long can it be retained or reviewed?”
Age eligibility and content permission
Age assurance decides which product experience you receive. It is not a blanket authorization for graphic sexual content, illegal activity, or any other category prohibited by a usage policy. Adult accounts can have broader features than teen accounts while still facing classifiers, refusal rules, and regional restrictions.

These descriptions reflect provider documentation available in 2026. Account type, workspace controls, jurisdiction, rollout status, and later policy changes can alter the result.
ChatGPT: separate Temporary Chat from the training switch
What Temporary Chat does
ChatGPT Temporary Chat is the clearest example of a mode that changes several privacy properties at once. A temporary conversation does not appear in chat history, does not create or update memories, and is not used for model improvement while it remains temporary. OpenAI may nevertheless retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. That retention exception means Temporary Chat is safer for limiting ordinary history and personalization than for making a legally absolute confidentiality promise.
What the account-level switch does
The “Improve the model for everyone” control addresses model-improvement use, not visibility. When disabled, new conversations are prevented from being used to improve models, but saved chats can remain in your history. Turning the switch off therefore suits someone who wants a searchable record without contributing new conversations to model improvement.

Important conversion rule
If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat governed by your account settings. Saving is therefore a deliberate privacy change: the conversation leaves the temporary path and can be handled like other saved chats.

- Minimize visible history and memory: start a Temporary Chat and do not save it.
- Keep history but block new model-improvement use: disable “Improve the model for everyone” and use ordinary chats.
- Reduce exposure of highly sensitive material: use the least identifying details possible; neither control removes safety retention or other legal and security processing.
Claude: Incognito limits improvement use, not safety processing
What Incognito means
Anthropic states that Claude Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when the Model Improvement setting is enabled. That is a specific exclusion from routine model-improvement use, not a promise that the provider cannot process the content for any other reason.
Safety-flag exception
Anthropic also says conversations flagged for safety may be used or analyzed to improve trust-and-safety enforcement, including training for safety-team models. A flagged Incognito conversation can therefore enter a safety workflow even though it is excluded from ordinary Claude improvement. When evaluating privacy, ask whether your concern is product training or any provider access under a safety exception; Incognito answers only the first question.
How to use the distinction
Use Incognito when your priority is excluding a conversation from routine Claude improvement. Avoid describing it as “seen by nobody,” and do not assume that a sensitive prompt cannot trigger automated detection or subsequent review under the Usage Policy.
Character.AI: age assurance, reading mode, and opt-out controls
Adult and under-18 experiences
Character.AI’s age-assurance page, updated July 17, 2026, says users verified as 18 or older retain full access to chat and standard features. Verified users under 18 receive a reading-only experience without chat. The provider’s own wording is: “Users verified as under 18 are placed in the Under-18 experience, which includes reading mode.” Reading mode is an age-safety restriction, not a privacy mode.
How age may be assessed
The age-assurance FAQ describes multiple signals, including login information, platform activity, and some third-party signals. Selfie or identification steps can be requested in specified circumstances, but the documentation does not establish that every user must upload an ID. Persona handles age-assurance attempts, and Character.AI says it does not directly handle or store submitted documents. Because rollout conditions can vary, review the prompt shown on your account and the current regional disclosure before submitting anything.

Training and model-improvement choices
A July 1, 2026 privacy update says the policy now explains certain information collected during initial model development and training and that this particular processing no longer occurs. It also says users can opt out of using their personal data to train and improve models. The full privacy policy and any regional notice remain the controlling documents, so treat the summary as an explanation of the control rather than a substitute for the policy.
Why adult status is not unrestricted access
Character.AI’s safety documentation describes more conservative classifiers and sensitive-content limits for under-18 users than for adults. That difference does not establish that verified adults can generate every explicit scenario. Adult verification answers “Which experience am I eligible to use?” Content rules answer “What may the service generate?” Keep those questions separate.
Replika: what its 18-plus privacy policy establishes
Age scope
The surfaced Replika privacy policy defines “you” as a user at least 18 years old. That is a policy eligibility statement, not evidence that every country, app-store listing, or account currently exposes a particular adult conversation mode.

The policy says message and content data may be processed by third-party language-model providers solely to generate conversational responses and deliver core app functionality. If you use Replika, the relevant privacy question is therefore not only what the app itself stores, but also which processors can handle message content to produce a reply.
Anonymized safety and performance use
The same policy describes limited anonymized portions of messages being used for safety and performance purposes. “Anonymized” narrows the stated use; it does not mean that no message fragment is ever processed. The policy does not, by itself, verify the current availability or boundaries of an erotic or other adult roleplay mode, so confirm the live product description and applicable terms before relying on that assumption.
The six questions to ask for any chatbot
1. Does the conversation appear in history?
Check whether the mode removes the chat from the normal list, whether search or export can still include it, and what happens if you manually save it. “Not in history” is useful for reducing accidental discovery on a shared device, but it is not equivalent to deletion from provider systems.

2. Does it create or use memory?
Look for both sides of the memory feature: whether the current chat writes a new memory and whether existing memories can influence the reply. A mode that disables writing can still read previously stored preferences unless the provider says otherwise.

Identify whether the exclusion applies automatically to the mode, only after an account opt-out, or not at all. Confirm whether the rule covers new conversations only and whether business, education, or team workspaces have separate administrators.
4. What retention and review exceptions exist?
Find the stated period, purpose, and trigger for retention. Safety, fraud, legal requests, and security incidents are common exceptions. A provider that publishes a maximum period is more informative than one that simply calls a mode private.
5. How is age determined?
Ask whether eligibility comes from an account declaration, a signal-based inference, a third-party age check, a selfie, or an ID document. Also check what happens when the system is uncertain and whether an appeal path exists.
6. What content remains restricted?
Read the current Usage Policy, safety rules, and regional terms. Adult status may change the classifier threshold or feature set without allowing graphic sexual content, exploitation, illegal instructions, or attempts to evade safeguards.
Adult access is not the same as an adult-content guarantee
Services can use “adult” to mean an account holder is over a minimum age, while “adult content” describes what the model may produce. Those are independent dimensions:

- Eligibility: whether you may use chat features instead of a restricted reading or preview experience.
- Safety classification: how aggressively the system filters sexual, violent, exploitative, or otherwise sensitive prompts.
- Feature availability: whether roleplay, voice, image generation, or other tools are enabled for your region and plan.
- Policy permission: whether a specific request is allowed at all.
Do not infer a provider’s content boundaries from age verification alone. The documented Character.AI distinction between adult and under-18 classifiers illustrates why an adult account can receive broader access and still encounter refusals.
Privacy trade-offs when conversations involve intimate information
Reduce identifying detail before you type
Private modes cannot protect information you voluntarily combine into a unique profile. Remove names, exact addresses, employer details, account numbers, medical identifiers, and images that contain metadata. Describe a situation at the level needed for the answer rather than pasting an entire private record.
Separate identity from the conversation
Use a neutral scenario when possible. If the answer depends on age, relationship status, or location, provide only the minimum fact needed. Avoid reusing a distinctive username or copying a message that contains another person’s personal information.
Check shared-device exposure
Even when a mode hides provider history, browser autofill, screenshots, notifications, exports, and clipboard history can reveal the exchange locally. Lock the device, review notification previews, and delete local copies you no longer need.
Understand deletion versus opt-out
An opt-out governs a stated use of new data; deletion removes data from a particular account or system when the provider’s process permits it. ChatGPT’s account-level model-improvement switch demonstrates why these are not interchangeable: saved chats can remain after model-improvement use is disabled.
A practical comparison workflow
- Define the sensitivity. Classify the planned conversation as ordinary, personal, intimate, regulated, or identifying. The more damaging disclosure would be, the less you should rely on a marketing label.
- Record the exact mode and date. Write down the mode name shown in the interface, your account type, and the date you checked it. Policies and rollouts change, especially age-assurance systems.
- Inspect history and memory controls. Start a test conversation with harmless text. Verify whether it appears in history and whether a memory entry is created or updated.
- Inspect model-improvement settings. Locate the provider’s current control, note whether it applies to new conversations only, and check for separate workspace administration.
- Read the retention exception. Search the privacy notice for safety review, fraud, legal compliance, security, and maximum retention language. Record each exception instead of stopping at the word “private.”
- Check age and regional requirements. Confirm whether your account is treated as adult, what evidence may be requested, and whether the experience differs in your country.
- Review content rules separately. Look for the current Usage Policy and feature-specific limits. Do not use an adult badge as a proxy for permission.
- Run a non-sensitive verification prompt. Test only with harmless text to confirm history behavior, memory behavior, and whether the feature is actually enabled on your account.
- Decide what not to disclose. If the provider’s retention, review, or processor terms do not meet your risk threshold, keep the conversation hypothetical or use an offline tool designed for your requirements.
Common mistakes and the correct interpretation
- “It is temporary, so it is deleted immediately.” Temporary modes can still have a safety-retention window. ChatGPT Temporary Chat may be retained for up to 30 days.
- “I turned off training, so my saved chats disappeared.” The ChatGPT improvement switch changes model-improvement use; it does not hide or delete saved history.
- “Incognito means no employee can ever review it.” Anthropic says safety-flagged Claude Incognito chats may still be used or analyzed for trust-and-safety work.
- “Verified adult means all sexual roleplay is allowed.” Age assurance changes eligibility, while content policies and classifiers still govern individual requests.
- “No ID prompt means the service knows my age with certainty.” Character.AI describes inference from multiple signals and says selfie or ID checks can be requested in specified circumstances; rollout is not identical for every user.
- “Third-party processing means the app has sold my messages.” Replika’s cited policy describes processing by language-model providers to generate responses and provide core functionality. That is a specific disclosed purpose; read the policy for other uses rather than assuming either sale or zero sharing.
How to monitor a policy that may change
Save the date and version of the policy you relied on. Recheck after a major app update, a new age-assurance prompt, a change in your plan or workspace, or a move to another country. Pay attention to changes in these phrases:
- “used to improve,” “train,” or “model improvement” — may alter whether conversations enter development workflows;
- “temporary,” “incognito,” or “private” — may change history, memory, or retention behavior;
- “safety review,” “flagged,” or “trust and safety” — identifies exceptions to ordinary processing;
- “verified adult,” “under-18,” or “reading mode” — defines eligibility, not unrestricted content;
- “service providers,” “processors,” or “language-model providers” — identifies other parties that may handle message data.
Regional privacy rights can provide additional access, deletion, objection, or appeal options, but the scope and process depend on your location and the provider’s current notice. Use the live in-product controls and policy that apply to your account.
Bottom line
Choose a chatbot by the specific protection you need, not by the word “private” or “adult.” ChatGPT Temporary Chat is documented as absent from history and memory and excluded from model improvement, with a safety-retention period of up to 30 days. Claude Incognito excludes routine model-improvement use but keeps a safety-review exception. Character.AI separates adult chat access from under-18 reading mode and offers a personal-data improvement opt-out, while its age checks and content limits vary by rollout. Replika’s 18-plus policy discloses third-party language-model processing but does not establish a current erotic-mode promise. In every case, minimize identifying details, verify the current settings, and treat safety review and policy exceptions as part of the privacy model.
