ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month in 2026, but it does not promise an unlimited number of messages. Usage caps can change with demand, the model you select, and system conditions. OpenAI may use conversations from individual Free, Plus, and Pro accounts to improve its models unless you turn off Improve the model for everyone. Temporary Chat keeps a conversation out of history, memory, and model training. If you cancel, billing stops at the next renewal; a refund is a separate request governed by the purchase platform, timing, location, and other eligibility rules.
What ChatGPT Plus includes and what it costs
OpenAI lists ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month in 2026. That subscription covers the ChatGPT service, not API calls: API usage is billed separately under API pricing and account billing.

Plus provides broader access to models and tools than the free service. Depending on current availability, that can include voice conversations, image generation, file analysis, and Deep Research. Features, model names, and availability can change by account, region, and rollout status, so the model picker and plan page in your account are the authoritative view.
What Plus does not guarantee
- It does not guarantee unlimited messages.
- It does not include API credits or combine API and ChatGPT billing.
- It does not guarantee that every model or tool is available at all times.
- It does not automatically refund a charge when you cancel.
What are the ChatGPT Plus limits?
Plus can impose message or usage caps, particularly during high demand. OpenAI describes these as limits that help keep the service usable for everyone. There is no single permanent quota that applies to every Plus subscriber: the allowance can vary with system conditions, your plan, the model, and the type of workload.

A cap may therefore appear different from one day to the next or differ between models in the same account. Long prompts, file analysis, image generation, voice, and other tools can have separate or changing allowances. Treat any number shown in your account as the current allowance for that model and period, not as a lifetime Plus specification.
How to see the allowance that applies to you
- Sign in to ChatGPT and check Settings for your current plan.
- Open the model picker in a new conversation.
- Read any limit, reset-time, or availability notice shown for the selected model or tool.
- Repeat the check after switching models; an allowance for one model does not establish the allowance for another.
If a limit appears earlier than expected, first check that you are using the intended account and model. Allowances can change while a high-demand event is in progress. OpenAI says support cannot manually reset a limit, but support can investigate a suspected counting error or an access failure.
Free, Plus, and Pro: what can be compared safely
Plan names, features, allowances, and Pro availability are changeable. The table below describes the decision points without inventing a fixed message quota or a Pro price that OpenAI has not stated here.

Is ChatGPT Plus worth it if you might hit a message cap?
Plus is most useful when you value broader model and tool access and can tolerate a changing allowance. It is a poor fit if your work requires a guaranteed, fixed number of requests every day or uninterrupted access to one particular model.
Choose Plus when
- You regularly need tools such as file analysis, voice, image generation, or available Deep Research.
- You want broader access during ordinary demand but understand that caps can still apply.
- You can switch models or wait for a reset when an allowance is reached.
Consider staying on Free when
- Your usage is occasional and the available models already meet your needs.
- A variable allowance would disrupt time-critical work.
- You are subscribing only to obtain API access; API billing is separate.
Before subscribing
Open the current plan page and model picker while signed in. Record the allowance and reset information your account actually displays, then decide whether that behavior matches your workload. Do not rely on an old screenshot or a quota quoted for another model, date, or account.
Does ChatGPT use your conversations to train models?
For individual Free, Plus, and Pro services, OpenAI may use content to improve model performance. You can opt out for future conversations by changing the data-control setting, but one important exception applies: if you submit feedback on a response, OpenAI says the entire conversation associated with that feedback may be used to improve models even if you previously opted out.
Turn off model improvement for ordinary chats
- Open ChatGPT and select Settings.
- Open Data Controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
- Confirm that the setting remains off when you begin a new session or sign in on another device.
This setting is an account control for the individual service. It does not erase an existing conversation, and it does not prevent the feedback exception described above.

How Temporary Chat changes storage and training
Temporary Chat is the strongest built-in choice when you do not want a conversation in normal history. OpenAI states: “Temporary chats don’t show in history, don’t use/create memories, and aren’t used to train models.”
Use Temporary Chat for a sensitive one-off question
- Start a new conversation.
- Choose the Temporary option where it appears in the chat or model interface.
- Check that the temporary indicator is visible before sending sensitive content.
- Avoid submitting thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback on that conversation if you want to avoid the feedback-related use described in OpenAI’s individual-plan policy.
Temporary Chat is not a substitute for removing identifying information before you upload text, images, or files. Redact account numbers, government identifiers, private keys, medical details, and other information that the task does not require.
What happens when you cancel ChatGPT Plus?
Cancellation stops future renewals. It does not automatically refund a previous charge, and deleting the app does not cancel the subscription. You normally retain access through the paid period, subject to the service and account terms.
Web subscription
- Sign in at ChatGPT.
- Open your profile menu and choose Settings.
- Open the subscription or account billing area.
- Select Manage, then choose Cancel subscription and confirm.
iPhone or iPad subscription
If Apple billed the subscription, cancellation must be completed through Apple:
- Open the iPhone or iPad Settings app.
- Tap your Apple ID name, then Subscriptions.
- Select ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
Removing the ChatGPT app does not affect an Apple subscription.

Android subscription
If Google Play billed you, use the store subscription controls:
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon and choose Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Select ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel subscription and complete the confirmation screens.
Uninstalling the Android app does not cancel a Google Play subscription.

OpenAI’s general position is that payments are non-refundable, subject to applicable legal rights and stated exceptions. A cancellation by itself is not a refund request.

An unused individual purchase may qualify for a discretionary refund request made within seven days, provided the policy conditions are met. Eligibility can depend on timing, usage, account history, and other factors; submitting a request does not guarantee approval.
EU, UK, and Turkey consumer rights
Residents of the European Union, United Kingdom, and Turkey have a 14-day prorated cancellation right for an eligible purchase. The amount can be reduced to reflect the service already provided during that period.
Where to request the refund
- Web purchase: contact OpenAI Support while signed in to the account that was charged.
- Google Play purchase: use the OpenAI Support route for Google Play purchases, following the instructions for that transaction.
- Apple purchase: request the refund directly from Apple; OpenAI cannot process an Apple-billed refund on Apple’s behalf.
Include the charged account, transaction date, purchase platform, and a concise explanation. Do not assume that opening a support ticket pauses a renewal; cancel the subscription separately if you do not want another charge.
Common problems and the fastest fix
“I canceled but was charged again”
Check which platform issued the charge and whether cancellation was completed before the renewal deadline. A web cancellation does not cancel an Apple or Google Play subscription, and vice versa. Save the confirmation screen or email, then contact the platform that billed you.

“My limit seems wrong”
Verify the selected model, account, and displayed reset time. Do not compare your allowance with a number posted for another user. If the counter appears to miscount or access fails despite an available allowance, contact support with timestamps, the model name, and screenshots; support cannot simply reset a valid cap.
“I opted out, but I clicked thumbs down”
The feedback exception may allow the entire associated conversation to be used for model improvement even after opting out. Avoid sending feedback on conversations that contain information you do not want included under that exception.
“I deleted the app and still see a subscription”
App deletion changes nothing about billing. Review Apple Subscriptions or Google Play Subscriptions, or the ChatGPT web billing page, depending on where you purchased.
