AI automation means generative AI completes a task that people previously performed. Job augmentation means AI handles part of a task while an employee supplies judgment, context, review or other human input. Most occupations contain a mixture of both kinds of tasks, so exposure to AI does not by itself mean that an employee’s job will disappear.
The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that one in four workers worldwide is in an occupation with some generative-AI exposure, while only 3.3% of global employment is in its highest exposure category. Its conclusion is that job transformation is more likely than wholesale redundancy, because nearly all occupations still include tasks that require people.
Automation and augmentation describe tasks, not whole occupations
The most useful distinction is what the AI does with an individual task.

Automation occurs when generative AI performs a task end to end, or takes over a task that an employee previously performed. A workflow may still have a person somewhere in the process—for example, approving an exception or handling an appeal—but the automated task itself no longer requires routine human execution.

Illustrative patterns include generating a standard report from structured records, classifying incoming documents, extracting fields from a form, or producing a first-pass response to a routine request. These are examples of task patterns, not claims that an entire occupation has already been automated.
Job augmentation
Augmentation occurs when AI performs only part of a task and the employee remains responsible for applying expertise, checking the result, supplying missing context or making the final decision. The AI may draft, summarize, translate, search, calculate or suggest while the worker directs and evaluates the work.
The World Economic Forum describes augmentation as a potential way to improve job quality and worker well-being as well as productivity. That is an implementation goal, not a guaranteed outcome: an AI assistant can reduce repetitive work, or it can increase monitoring, speed pressure and the volume of work assigned to a person.

An occupation is a bundle of tasks. Some may be highly structured and digital, some may require communication or professional judgment, and others may involve physical activity, relationships or accountability. Current generative AI may automate one part, assist another and have little practical effect on the rest.
That is why a statement such as “accounting is exposed” or “customer service is safe” is too broad to answer an employee’s question. The relevant questions are: Which tasks are changing? Does the system complete them or assist with them? Who checks the output? What happens when the system is wrong? Does the employee gain time and discretion, or merely receive more work at a faster pace?

What the ILO’s 2025 figures actually measure
The ILO’s 2025 global index estimates that one in four workers worldwide is in an occupation with some degree of generative-AI exposure. It places 3.3% of global employment in the highest exposure category. These are estimates of the potential for current tasks to be performed using generative AI, not counts of jobs that have been eliminated and not probabilities that a named employee will be replaced.

The updated method combines task-level data, expert input and AI predictions across nearly 30,000 tasks. The reported mean automation score was 0.29 in 2025, compared with 0.30 in 2023. The standard deviation was 0.14 in 2025, compared with 0.30 in 2023. Those figures describe the distribution and scoring method used in the index; they are not percentages of jobs lost, probabilities of dismissal or productivity gains.

Nearly all occupations retain activities requiring human input. An occupation can therefore have substantial exposure while still needing people for judgment, interaction, physical work, responsibility or unusual cases.
Exposure is uneven across economies, occupations and genders
Clerical work remains among the occupations with the highest exposure in the ILO’s classification. Exposure also varies with national income and access to digital infrastructure. The 2025 index reports some degree of exposure for 11% of employment in low-income countries and 34% in high-income countries.
Gender differences appear in the highest exposure category in high-income countries: 9.6% of female employment versus 3.5% of male employment, according to the ILO’s figures. This does not mean that every woman in a high-income economy faces automation, nor that men’s roles are unaffected. It reflects the occupational mix represented in the index and the different tasks concentrated in those jobs.
Employees should treat these figures as context for asking better workplace questions, not as an individual risk score. A worker’s actual experience depends on the tasks in the role, the employer’s adoption decisions, local rules, available systems, training and how work is reorganized.
What newer evidence says about productivity and displacement
The ILO’s June 2026 review examined experiments, firm-level data, platform studies and worker surveys from Australia, Denmark, Germany, Korea, Kuwait, the United Kingdom and the United States. It finds that productivity gains are real in some settings but uneven and often not yet verified at scale.

The review reports that large-scale displacement remains limited in the studies it examined. Workers have reported time savings of a few percent of working hours, but those savings have not yet translated consistently into higher measured output, earnings or employment. A saved block of time can be used for better service, additional tasks, training, reduced hours or simply a faster pace; the technology alone does not determine which outcome occurs.
These findings also explain why an impressive demonstration is not proof of a labor-market result. A system may produce a fluent draft while still requiring fact checking, security controls, customer consent, professional accountability or extensive exception handling. Measured effects depend on the complete workflow and on management choices, not only on model capability.
Illustrative workplace scenarios
The following scenarios show how the same role can contain both automation and augmentation. They illustrate task patterns rather than predicting what any particular employer will implement.

An AI system may extract supplier names, dates and totals from standard invoices and route records automatically. That is automation of the extraction and routing tasks. An employee may still investigate a duplicate charge, resolve a mismatch, contact a supplier or approve an unusual payment. Those activities remain human-led and may become more important as routine cases disappear.
Research and reporting
An analyst may ask AI to search a permitted document set, propose themes and draft a chart description. If the analyst checks sources, corrects errors, chooses the relevant evidence and explains implications to a decision-maker, the AI is augmenting the analysis. If a standardized internal report is generated and distributed without case-by-case human drafting, that particular reporting step is closer to automation.
Customer support
A system can classify a request, retrieve a policy passage and suggest a response. The employee may edit the wording, recognize a vulnerable customer, handle an exception or decide when a complaint must be escalated. Automating triage does not automate empathy, negotiation or accountability for the final interaction.

Clinical or care documentation
AI may turn a permitted recording or notes into a draft summary. A professional must verify that the summary is complete and accurate, correct terminology, apply context and decide what belongs in the official record. The drafting step is augmented; the professional responsibility for the record is not transferred merely because text was generated.

Field and physical work
Generative AI may automate scheduling, parts lookup or the preparation of a service report while the technician still performs inspection, repair and safety decisions. The core physical task may have little direct generative-AI exposure even though surrounding administrative tasks change.
How to assess what AI means for your own job
A personal assessment should start with the work you actually do, not the title printed on an organizational chart.
- List your recurring tasks. Write down the activities that consume a normal week, including preparation, communication, documentation, review, exceptions and follow-up.
- Classify each task by AI relationship. Mark it as a candidate for end-to-end automation, a candidate for assistance, or a task with little current generative-AI exposure. Use “candidate” because technical potential is not the same as an approved workplace change.
- Identify the human input that cannot be skipped. Note where you supply context, professional judgment, relationship skills, physical action, ethical reasoning, approval or accountability.
- Check the failure cost. A fluent output can still be wrong. Record which errors would affect safety, money, privacy, compliance, reputation or a person’s access to a service.
- Estimate the workflow, not just the output. Include data preparation, permissions, checking, corrections, escalation and record keeping. A tool that saves drafting time may add review or coordination work.
- Separate capability from adoption. Ask whether your employer has approved the tool, supplied secure access, defined acceptable data and changed the process. A publicly available capability is not automatically authorized for workplace use.
- Choose a learning priority. Build expertise in the tasks that remain human-led, and learn enough about the AI-assisted tasks to direct, verify and challenge the system.
Skills that become valuable in each model
When tasks are automated
Employees may need stronger exception handling, quality assurance, process monitoring, escalation judgment and understanding of how the automated workflow affects customers or colleagues. Knowing when not to trust an automated result can matter as much as operating the system.
When tasks are augmented
Domain knowledge remains central because someone must judge whether a suggestion fits the real situation. Useful capabilities include asking precise questions, supplying relevant context, checking claims against authoritative records, editing for the audience and documenting the basis for a decision.

Across both models
Communication, collaboration, adaptability and the ability to explain a decision remain important. Employees who understand the underlying work can spot errors and redesign a process more effectively than someone who treats the model as an unquestioned authority.

Job quality depends on implementation choices
The same technical capability can produce different employee outcomes. If an organization removes repetitive work and gives workers discretion to handle complex cases, augmentation may improve the role. If it uses AI mainly to measure every action, increase quotas or shift responsibility for errors onto employees, the result may be worse job quality even when the tool is technically useful.
Before a system is introduced, employees should seek clarity about:
- Which tasks the system performs and which remain the employee’s responsibility.
- What level of human review is required and who has authority to override the system.
- How errors, complaints and exceptional cases are escalated.
- What data may be entered, where it is stored and who can access the outputs.
- Whether the system’s recommendations are logged so decisions can be explained later.
- What training, paid learning time and support are available.
- How performance targets, staffing and workload will change after implementation.
- How employees can report harmful, biased or unreliable outputs without retaliation.
These are workplace-design questions, not merely software questions. They determine whether time savings become better service, learning and autonomy or simply more output expected from the same people.
Questions to ask your manager or HR team
- Which specific tasks are planned for automation, and which are intended to be augmented?
- What evidence shows that the system performs reliably for our cases, rather than only for demonstrations?
- Who reviews outputs, and what happens when the system is uncertain or wrong?
- Will staffing, schedules, performance measures or responsibilities change?
- What training is provided, and is time for that training protected?
- Can employees decline to use an unapproved tool or report a harmful result?
- How will the organization measure effects on accuracy, workload, autonomy and service quality—not only speed?
How to read claims about AI exposure
Exposure studies are useful for identifying where task change may be possible, but they cannot answer every employee’s individual question. A high exposure category does not say that all tasks in an occupation are automatable. A low overall exposure figure does not guarantee that a particular workplace, team or task will remain unchanged.
Pay attention to the unit being measured. The ILO’s figures refer to employment in occupations and to the potential automation of tasks using current generative AI. They do not cover every form of AI, robotics or future technical development. They also do not include the employer’s decision about whether to adopt a system, the cost of integration, legal requirements or the preferences of workers and customers.
Finally, distinguish a time saving from a measured economic outcome. The ILO’s 2026 evidence review found reported time savings but no consistent translation into higher measured output, earnings or employment at the point covered by the review. Longer-term results can change as organizations redesign work and as better data becomes available.
What this means for employees now
Expect change to arrive unevenly across tasks rather than as a single event in which an occupation is either “safe” or “automated.” Protect your position by understanding your workflow, learning to verify and direct AI-assisted work, and developing the judgment and relationships that automated systems cannot assume. At the same time, ask whether your employer is using AI to improve the work or merely to intensify it.
The ILO’s evidence supports a measured conclusion: generative AI creates meaningful exposure, especially in some clerical and high-income-country employment, but exposure is not a job-loss forecast. Because most occupations retain tasks requiring human input, the immediate employee question is not simply “Will AI replace me?” It is “Which parts of my work will change, what responsibility will remain mine, and what conditions will determine whether that change helps or harms my job?”
