Choose an AI app builder for a fast, bounded web-app prototype when its supported features, data terms, hosting model, and usage charges fit your requirements. Hire a developer when the app needs custom engineering, demanding integrations, formal testing, or an accountable person to operate it after launch. The financially sound choice is the route’s total cost over the app’s life—not a builder subscription compared with one developer’s hourly rate.
What you are actually choosing
What an AI app builder provides
An AI app builder turns natural-language instructions, visual configuration, and platform services into some combination of interface, database, business logic, authentication, hosting, and deployment. For example, Lovable says it can create a web app’s interface, database, and logic and host the result on its platform (Lovable app-builder description). That is a vendor capability statement, not proof that every resulting app satisfies your security, accessibility, reliability, performance, or regulatory requirements.
The builder route trades some control for speed and a managed environment. You work inside the platform’s supported architecture, usage limits, integrations, and deployment process. Your own time still has a cost: writing precise prompts, learning the product, checking generated behavior, fixing data-model mistakes, and deciding when an apparent shortcut has created technical debt.

What hiring a developer provides
A developer can design an architecture around your requirements, write or review the code, connect systems that do not have a ready-made connector, and establish testing and deployment practices. You can hire an employee, an independent contractor, or an agency; those routes have different prices, contracts, availability, and accountability. A developer is not automatically a guarantee of quality. The result depends on the specification, technical judgment, testing, security review, communication, and post-launch responsibility written into the engagement.

How much does it cost to make an app?
There is no single builder price for “an app.” The cost depends on the platform, plan, usage, data volume, hosting, integrations, and the human work needed to make the output production-ready. Current list prices illustrate the range but are not a controlled comparison of equivalent products.
| Platform and plan | Published price | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Lovable Free | $0 per month | Free tier; the platform says credits can be consumed by building, hosting, and AI features. |
| Lovable Pro | $25 per month | List price on the current pricing page; substantial app size or traffic can create costs beyond included grants. |
| Lovable Business | $50 per month | List price on the current pricing page; check current credits, hosting terms, and included controls before purchase. |
| Bubble Starter | $59 per month, billed annually | Annual-billed monthly price with a plan-specific workload-unit allowance and feature set. |
| Bubble Growth | $209 per month, billed annually | Annual-billed monthly price; workload units and features differ from Starter. |
| Bubble Team | $549 per month, billed annually | Annual-billed monthly price; higher-tier workload allocation and features. |
See the vendors’ current pages for the exact inclusions and terms: Lovable pricing and Bubble pricing. Prices, credits, workload units, hosting charges, and plan names can change, so verify them immediately before committing.
A subscription is only one line in the budget. Add setup and learning time, design work, paid integrations, email or payment services, storage, monitoring, domain and security services, usage overages, testing, accessibility remediation, support, and the cost of moving away if the platform no longer fits. A free tier can therefore be inexpensive for a private experiment while being unsuitable for a public service with real traffic or sensitive data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow much does it cost to hire an app developer?
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a $135,980 median annual wage for U.S. software developers in May 2025. The BLS notes that its wage estimates exclude self-employed workers, so this figure is an employee wage benchmark—not a freelance quote, agency rate, or complete project cost (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).
An employee also creates costs beyond salary: recruiting, payroll taxes, benefits, equipment, management, paid leave, training, workspace, and the time required before the person is productive. A contractor or agency may include some of those overheads in its rate but may charge separately for discovery, project management, design, testing, infrastructure, and support.

One vendor-authored market guide, published August 14 and updated August 23, 2026, reports roughly $20–$200 per hour for individual U.S. app developers, with premium agencies above that range (AxonBuild cost guide). Treat this as a broad directional guide from one provider, not an official statistic or a quote for your app. Skill level, geography, platform, urgency, domain knowledge, and the quality of the brief can move a real bid substantially.
To obtain useful bids, describe the same scope to every candidate: target platforms, screens, workflows, roles, integrations, migrated data, expected traffic, security obligations, launch date, acceptance tests, warranty, and maintenance period. Ask each bidder to separate discovery, implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing support. Comparing an unbounded hourly estimate with a builder’s monthly subscription will produce a misleading result.
Compare total cost, not the sticker price
| Cost or responsibility | AI app builder | Hired developer | Question to answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial build | Plan, credits or workload units, and your time configuring and reviewing output | Discovery, design, coding, project management, and review time | What exact deliverables and acceptance tests are included? |
| Infrastructure | Included hosting may be limited by plan, traffic, storage, or usage | Cloud, databases, monitoring, domains, and deployment may be separate | What happens when usage exceeds the allowance? |
| Integrations | Connector availability and API limits determine effort | Custom integrations are possible but require engineering and maintenance | Are every required system and edge case supported? |
| Quality and assurance | You must validate generated code, permissions, accessibility, performance, and security | Testing and reviews can be contracted, but they must be specified and evidenced | Who signs off that the release meets the requirement? |
| Operations | Platform handles some hosting operations; you remain responsible for app behavior and account settings | A person or team can own monitoring, incidents, updates, and releases | Who responds when a payment, login, or data job fails? |
| Change and scale | New behavior may encounter platform limits or consume more units | Changes are billable engineering work but can be designed around your architecture | What is the cost of the next ten changes and a tenfold traffic increase? |
| Exit | Migration depends on export formats, deployment rights, and platform-specific services | Source and infrastructure can be transferred if the contract and documentation provide for it | Can another team run the app and access all data without the original supplier? |
The available sources do not establish a like-for-like total cost for building the same defined app by either route. Consequently, there is no defensible universal savings percentage or guaranteed faster build time. Make a project-specific model instead.
Six decision axes that reveal the better route
1. Total cost over the app’s life
Estimate 12- and 36-month costs. For a builder, include plan upgrades, credits or workload units, overages, hosting, integrations, support, and migration. For a developer, include discovery, implementation, testing, infrastructure, maintenance, management, and the cost of replacing the person or team. Include your own review and administration hours in both cases.
2. Time to useful evidence
Measure the time to a testable core workflow, not the time to generate a screen. A builder can be attractive when a small team needs to put a bounded idea in front of users quickly. A developer may reach useful evidence faster when the builder’s learning curve, repeated prompting, or unsupported integration would create rework.

- 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.
3. Customization and integration
List the non-negotiable rules: permissions, calculations, approval paths, offline behavior, external systems, webhooks, data retention, and unusual error cases. If the platform cannot demonstrate those behaviors in a small proof, budget for custom engineering rather than assuming a workaround will remain maintainable.
4. Risk and assurance
Identify the consequences of a breach, incorrect calculation, outage, inaccessible interface, or lost record. Sensitive personal, financial, health, or regulated data may require controls and evidence that a generated prototype does not provide by default. Require a threat model, least-privilege permissions, backups, logging, dependency updates, accessibility testing, load testing, and an incident process where the consequences justify them.
5. Ownership and portability
Ask what you can export, in which formats, and under what plan. Lovable’s pricing page states: “You own your code, which means the apps, websites, and other projects you build with Lovable, customer data stored in Lovable, as well as any AI output you generate in Lovable.” The same statement carries a caveat that third-party rights in underlying AI models may apply (Lovable pricing). This is a vendor statement, not a universal guarantee for every builder or component.
Before launch, perform a practical exit check: export a copy of the source and data, identify proprietary services, document environment variables and secrets handling, test whether the application can be deployed elsewhere, and price a migration. Confirm who owns custom designs, documentation, domains, accounts, and third-party licenses.
6. Ongoing responsibility
Every live app needs someone to fix defects, rotate credentials, update dependencies, answer support requests, monitor failures, and restore backups. A builder may host the runtime, but it does not remove responsibility for your product’s behavior. A developer can take that role only if the contract names response times, access, documentation, release authority, and what happens when the engagement ends.

When an AI app builder is a sensible first route
- The first release has a narrow, well-defined workflow rather than a large set of exceptions.
- You need evidence from real users before funding a larger build.
- The required screens, authentication, data model, and integrations are demonstrably supported by the chosen platform.
- Your team can review generated behavior and has a plan for security, accessibility, backups, and support.
- Data and hosting terms are acceptable for the information you will store.
- You have calculated the cost of expected usage, not just the entry-level plan.
Use the builder as a deliberate validation phase, with an exit plan, rather than assuming that a prototype is automatically production-ready.
When hiring a developer is the stronger choice
- The app needs custom algorithms, complex permissions, unusual workflows, or integrations without reliable platform connectors.
- Security, privacy, accessibility, performance, uptime, auditability, or regulatory obligations require demonstrable engineering controls.
- The product must run across infrastructure you control or must avoid dependence on one platform’s proprietary runtime.
- There is substantial existing data to migrate, synchronize, reconcile, or retain under a defined policy.
- Failures have material financial, safety, legal, or operational consequences.
- You need a named owner for releases, monitoring, incidents, dependency updates, and long-term changes.
Hiring is not a shortcut around specification. A developer can deliver the wrong system efficiently if the scope and acceptance criteria are vague.
A practical builder evaluation, step by step
- Write the minimum useful workflow. Describe the user, trigger, input, rules, output, permissions, and failure state for each essential flow. Separate must-have behavior from ideas for later.
- Define data boundaries. List every field, retention period, export requirement, region, role, and third-party service. Mark information that the platform must not process.
- Build a disposable proof. Use representative but non-sensitive data. Test the hardest workflow and at least one failure path before polishing the interface.
- Measure the real effort. Record setup, prompting, configuration, debugging, review, integration, and deployment hours. Include the time required from a subject-matter expert who is not a developer.
- Test quality deliberately. Check authentication and authorization with multiple roles, invalid input, concurrency, mobile and keyboard access, slow networks, restore procedures, and logs. Do not infer correctness from a successful demonstration.
- Price realistic usage. Estimate users, requests, storage, file sizes, background jobs, and peak traffic. Map those figures to credits, workload units, hosting limits, and overage rules on the exact plan.
- Verify exit and support. Export source and data, read the service terms, identify proprietary dependencies, and document who handles incidents and migration.
- Set a go/no-go gate. Proceed only if the proof meets the acceptance tests, the risk owner approves the data terms, and the 12-month cost remains within budget.
How to hire a developer without buying an ambiguous project
- Create a brief. Include target platforms, user roles, screens, workflows, integrations, data migration, traffic assumptions, security and accessibility requirements, launch date, and maintenance expectations.
- Define acceptance criteria. Write observable tests such as “an administrator can revoke a session,” “a failed payment is recorded and retried,” or “a keyboard-only user can complete checkout.”
- Request comparable proposals. Ask several candidates to price the same phases and identify assumptions, exclusions, dependencies, and change-order rates.
- Evaluate evidence. Review relevant shipped work, testing practice, deployment documentation, references, communication habits, and the proposed person who will do the work—not only a sales presentation.
- Choose the engagement model. A fixed scope can clarify a well-defined first release; time-and-materials can suit discovery and evolving requirements. Either way, set a budget cap, review points, ownership terms, and termination and handover procedures.
- Protect access and ownership. Keep domains, cloud accounts, repositories, analytics, payment accounts, and production credentials under your organization’s control. Grant the minimum access required.
- Plan operations before launch. Contract monitoring, backups, security updates, incident response, documentation, warranty fixes, and who approves releases.
Questions to put in writing before choosing
- What must the first version actually do, and what is explicitly out of scope?
- Which costs are included in the builder plan or developer proposal, and which are usage-based or billed separately?
- Can you export code and data in usable formats, and what would a migration require?
- Who will test, secure, deploy, monitor, and maintain the app after launch?
- What happens when a requirement exceeds the builder’s capabilities or the developer’s estimate?
- Who owns the accounts, source, data, designs, documentation, and third-party licenses?
- What service levels apply to outages, security incidents, urgent defects, and support requests?
Common mistakes and their fixes
Comparing a subscription with an hourly rate
Why it fails: the figures cover different work and obligations. Fix: compare the complete cost of an identical scope over a stated period, including your time, infrastructure, testing, and maintenance.
Assuming generated code is production-ready
Why it fails: a working happy path can hide authorization bugs, unsafe data exposure, inaccessible controls, brittle integrations, and poor failure handling. Fix: require tests and independent review proportionate to the consequences of failure.
Ignoring usage growth
Why it fails: credits, workload units, storage, and hosting can rise with traffic and app size. Fix: model normal and peak usage, then test the next plan and overage policy before launch.

Treating portability as a slogan
Why it fails: source export may not include hosted databases, background jobs, secrets, deployment configuration, or proprietary services. Fix: perform an actual export and recovery exercise and price the migration.
Leaving maintenance undefined
Why it fails: no one is clearly responsible for updates, monitoring, incidents, or user support. Fix: assign an owner, response targets, access rights, backup duties, and a handover process before accepting production users.
A decision rule you can apply today
Select an AI app builder when it passes a proof against your hardest requirements, your team can operate it responsibly, and the projected total cost and exit risk are acceptable. Select a developer when the builder cannot demonstrate required behavior or assurance, or when you need custom integration and a clearly accountable engineering owner. If uncertainty is high, use a short, paid discovery phase—whether with a builder specialist or a developer—to turn assumptions into tested requirements before committing to a full build.
