Before prompting AI, decide what you want to accomplish, which part you want to understand or decide for yourself, and what help you can safely delegate. Then check the answer before relying on it. This pause keeps AI in a supporting role without assuming that every task needs the same boundary.
What should I figure out before asking AI?
Start with the goal, not the prompt. A request such as “write this for me” may get a quick result, but it can obscure whether you are trying to learn, make a decision, or simply finish a routine task. Those aims call for different kinds of help.
Use these questions as a practical aid:
- What am I trying to accomplish? Describe what a useful result would let you do.
- What do I want to understand, practice, or decide myself? Name the part of the work where your own reasoning or skill matters.
- Which bounded step could AI help with? Consider support such as organizing ideas, explaining a concept, or spotting possible gaps, rather than handing over the whole task by default.
- How will I evaluate the answer? Decide what sources, evidence, calculations, or independent checks could confirm it.
- Can I explain the result and stand behind the decision? If not, do more checking or reclaim part of the reasoning.
This is a synthesized set of prompts, not a validated checklist or universal rule. It draws on UNESCO’s emphasis on human engagement, higher-order thinking, and accountability, and on a research framework describing the metacognitive work involved in setting goals, breaking work into tasks, evaluating outputs, and deciding what to automate. UNESCO’s 2023 guidance and the CHI 2024 paper The Metacognitive Demands and Opportunities of Generative AI provide those underlying ideas.

Give AI a role that supports your goal rather than replacing the part you intend to learn, practice, or judge. For example, if you want to understand a difficult concept, ask for an explanation or a set of practice questions, then try to explain the idea in your own words. If you need to make a choice involving your priorities, ask AI to lay out options or trade-offs, but make the value judgment yourself.

This distinction matters because AI use can itself require thinking: you must clarify the goal, break down the work, assess the response, and decide whether automation is appropriate. The metacognition framework describes these demands and opportunities; it is a conceptual synthesis, not a clinical prescription that dictates one correct workflow for everyone.
UNESCO’s 2023 guidance for generative AI in education and research treats human agency as a central principle. In its foreword, Assistant Director-General for Education Stefania Giannini wrote, “AI must not usurp human intelligence.” The guidance emphasizes human engagement, higher-order thinking, and human accountability for accuracy and impacts. Those principles are useful beyond formal education, but they do not establish a universal boundary for every everyday task.

Which part of this task do I want AI to do?
There is no single division of labor that fits every task. Use the nature of your goal, the stakes of an error, how independently you can check the result, and whether the work depends on your personal values or accountability to decide how much to delegate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- When learning is the goal: Keep the central practice for yourself. AI can offer explanations, examples, questions, or feedback, but completing the exercise on your behalf may bypass the work you wanted to learn from.
- When the task is routine completion: Delegating more of a bounded, low-stakes step may make sense, provided you review the output and can correct it.
- When errors could be costly: Treat the response as a starting point, not a decision. Seek evidence and an independent check appropriate to the consequences.
- When personal values or responsibility are involved: AI can help surface options and considerations, but you remain responsible for the choice and its effects.
These are decision axes derived from the guidance and metacognition framework, not tested scales. They help make the trade-off visible; they do not prescribe a fixed amount of AI involvement.

The available evidence does not support the blanket claim that AI always improves thinking or always undermines it. It covers different settings and kinds of evidence, so its findings should not be collapsed into a universal verdict.
An exploratory 2024 programming study by Zhong, Zhu, Lim, and Ong involved 20 university students. The authors used surveys, screen recordings during an hour-long session, and participant reflections. In that specific task, participants in the human-led group spent significantly more time on solution development and refinement than those in the AI-led group. This small study concerns student programming; it cannot establish what happens in every use of AI. Read the study preprint.

Separately, the American Psychological Association summarized a 2025 meta-analysis by Wang and Fan of 51 experimental or quasi-experimental studies of ChatGPT learning interventions. The reported effect sizes were g=0.867 for participant learning, g=0.456 for perceived learning, and g=0.457 for higher-order thinking. These estimates concern the interventions included in that meta-analysis; they should not be generalized to every everyday AI task. Read the APA summary.
