AI is a point of tension in Linux kernel development, but the available evidence does not establish that the project is splitting. The kernel permits AI-assisted contributions under its normal rules: people must understand, test, disclose meaningful generated work, and take responsibility for what they submit. Linus Torvalds has said Linux is not anti-AI, while maintainers retain discretion over individual patches.

Is AI actually splitting Linux?

Not on the evidence available. There is a real disagreement about how AI should be used in kernel development, especially when generated work adds review burden or arrives without adequate testing. But that is not the same as a formal project split, nor does it establish that Linux developers divide neatly into pro-AI and anti-AI camps.

The documented policy is conditional rather than blanket approval: AI tools may be used, but ordinary expectations for quality, licensing, review, and accountability remain. No verified figure establishes what percentage of kernel contributions are AI-generated or that AI has caused a Linux kernel split.

What Linux kernel rules require for AI-assisted work

The kernel’s AI coding-assistant guidance routes AI-supported work through the usual contribution process. A human submitter must review the generated code, ensure licensing compliance, add their own sign-off, and accept responsibility for the contribution. An AI agent must not add a Signed-off-by tag: that certification belongs to a human who can attest to the Developer Certificate of Origin.

The guidance recommends an Assisted-by: LLM ... tag to identify assistance. Attribution does not transfer responsibility from the human contributor to the tool.

When disclosure is expected

The broader tool-generated-content guidance applies when a meaningful amount of a contribution was created by a tool rather than a person in the Signed-off-by chain. Examples include generated code, AI-written changelogs, and tool-assisted bug detection. Trivial spelling corrections, autocomplete, mechanical transformations, and reformatting are treated differently, although disclosure may still help reviewers.

For meaningful generated content, contributors should explain which tools they used, what parts were affected, relevant prompts or a summary of the assistance, and how they tested the result. They are expected to understand and defend the submission.

AI bug reports need more than a plausible explanation

For a nontrivial suspected bug, the AI-assistant guidance calls for a reproducer, a working fix, build and verification, and appropriate patch metadata. Contributors should say which steps they could not complete. An unverified report or untested fix can consume maintainer time without giving reviewers a reliable basis to act.

What Torvalds said—and what it does not establish

In a Linux Media Mailing List discussion on July 15, 2026, Linux’s top-level maintainer Linus Torvalds rejected an anti-AI stance and argued that technical merit should guide decisions. In a reproduced copy of his message, which links to the original mailing-list post, he wrote:

“Linux is not one of those anti-AI projects, and if somebody has issues with that, they can do the open-source thing and fork it.”

He also said, “The solution is to make sure those LLM tools help maintainers instead of just causing them pain,” and, “And so we make decisions primarily based on technical merit. Not fear of new tools.” Torvalds also acknowledged that AI use is not compulsory and that it can create pain for maintainers.

These are Torvalds’s stated views, not a project-wide vote or evidence of how widely AI is used. His position does not override the documented review process or require individual maintainers to accept generated patches.

Where the disagreement lies

The practical divide is less about a single yes-or-no rule than about whether AI-assisted work meets the standards expected of any kernel contribution.

Question AI-assisted work can be acceptable when… Why maintainers may object
Use A contributor uses a tool to help produce work that still meets kernel standards. Generated output is not automatically useful or correct; tool use alone does not make a patch acceptable.
Evidence and accountability The human submitter understands the contribution, supplies meaningful disclosure, tests it, and signs for it. Missing context, weak verification, or a submitter unable to explain the code makes review harder.
Reviewer workload The tool helps produce a clear, verified contribution that maintainers can assess. Unverified bug reports and untested fixes add noise and shift work onto reviewers.
Decision-making The contribution is judged on technical merit through normal review. Maintainers retain discretion to scrutinize, request more information or testing, or reject a patch.

This distinction matters: criticism of low-quality or burdensome AI output does not necessarily mean opposition to every use of AI. Equally, a general statement that Linux is not anti-AI does not mean maintainers must accept any particular generated contribution.

What adoption figures can—and cannot—tell us

The Linux Foundation’s 2025 Annual Report describes member-company uses of AI including code refactoring, network management, security-alert triage, and marketing. It says a “significant percentage” of maintainers use AI coding tools, but gives no exact percentage for that statement.

That qualitative observation is not a measurement of AI-generated kernel contributions. No verified statistic establishes the share of kernel patches produced with AI or quantifies an AI-caused split. Claims assigning a precise adoption rate or declaring the project divided go beyond the figures cited here.

How to read the debate

  • Policy: AI assistance is permitted within the standard contribution process, not exempt from it.
  • Responsibility: Humans—not AI agents—sign off, verify licensing, and stand behind their submissions.
  • Governance: Torvalds favors technical-merit decisions, while individual maintainers retain discretion over review and acceptance.
  • Evidence: There is evidence of tension and reported use, but no verified statistic or formal split established by the cited material.
