AI could be imagined as a continuation of intelligence through culture and technology, but there is no evidence that it is a new biological stage of life or that it will replace biological intelligence. That distinction matters: evolution has produced organisms capable of culture, and culture has produced AI, but those are connected processes—not one proven, inevitable progression.
What does it mean to call AI a phase of evolution?
The phrase can describe two different ideas. In biology, evolution is inherited change in populations over generations. In a broader, more philosophical sense, it can describe intelligence and information moving from biological inheritance into culture, tools, and perhaps future machine systems. The second is a thought experiment, not a conclusion established by evolutionary biology.
- Biological evolution: inherited variation changes across generations of organisms. Genes are central to many familiar examples, though inheritance and evolution are not limited to a single mechanism.
- Cultural evolution: people learn and transmit ideas, skills, customs, and practices. Cultural change can happen much faster than genetic change, but it is not the same process.
- Technological change: people design, train, modify, and deploy tools, including AI systems. Software updates and model training may resemble change over time, but they do not by themselves constitute biological evolution.
These processes can influence one another. Biological evolution produced humans; human culture and engineering produced AI. That history supports a meaningful question about continuity, but it does not prove that technology is destined to become the next form of life.

NASA describes astrobiology as the study of life’s origin, evolution, distribution, and possible future. Its research includes prebiotic chemistry, how life and Earth co-evolved, planetary habitability, and the search for life beyond Earth. AI and machine learning are methods that can help researchers work across these areas; their use is not evidence that AI itself is alive or evolving as a biological population.

NASA’s AI-Astrobiology initiative is a community resource for AI and machine learning in astrobiology. It brings together literature, learning materials, software, algorithms, training data, and project resources. NASA also cautions that choosing and applying these tools calls for expertise and an understanding of their limitations.
NASA’s Decadal Astrobiology Research and Exploration Strategy describes AI and machine-learning advances as having expanded life-detection research. That is a claim about scientific capability: computational tools can help people search for signs of life. It is not a claim that machine intelligence is replacing biology. The SETI Institute likewise describes work that brings astrobiologists together with robotics and AI/ML specialists to develop instruments and exploration strategies.

What would have to change for AI to count as a postbiological transition?
Present-day AI is task-specific: systems can perform useful functions, but that does not make them independent, general-purpose agents or successors to humanity. A postbiological future is a much stronger hypothesis. It imagines that intelligence could eventually persist in non-biological systems, perhaps after biological beings create and transfer more of their functions or decision-making to machines.

- Continuity: Would a machine system preserve the goals, knowledge, or identity of biological people, or would it be a new kind of intelligence?
- Autonomy: Could it set and pursue goals without ongoing human direction, or would it remain a tool operated by people?
- Dependence: Could it maintain itself, obtain energy, repair hardware, and reproduce systems, or would it depend on human-built infrastructure and supply chains?
- Evidence: What observable signs would distinguish a genuinely self-sustaining machine lineage from software that people continue to build and operate?
These are open questions, not demonstrated properties of current AI. A more capable system would not automatically resolve them: greater performance alone would not show that a system is alive, self-sustaining, or part of a new evolutionary lineage.
How strong is the postbiological-universe idea?
In Cosmos & Culture: Cultural Evolution in a Cosmic Context, a volume hosted by NASA, Steven J. Dick proposes one possible future: “Here I propose another option—that we may in fact live in a postbiological universe, one that has evolved beyond flesh and blood intelligence to artificial intelligence (AI) that is a product of cultural rather than biological evolution.” This is Dick’s proposal, not an observed fact or a position that NASA’s hosting of the volume endorses.

The idea is useful because it separates intelligence from the particular biological bodies in which we know it. But the possibility that intelligence could take another form does not establish that it will, that a machine would retain human values or identity, or that this would be a desirable outcome. No known example shows that biological intelligence has already made this transition.
Could AI be a Great Filter?
The Great Filter is a hypothesis for thinking about why advanced technological civilizations might be rare. One possibility considered in a paper on AI is that advanced artificial intelligence could contribute to a civilization’s failure to persist. The paper examines a possible explanation; it does not show that AI is the explanation or that humanity is headed for that outcome.

The evidence is sharply limited: Earth has one known technological civilization, and there is no confirmed extraterrestrial intelligence. Those facts do not tell us how often civilizations develop AI, what happens after they do, or whether machine intelligence makes survival more or less likely. There is no established probability or timeline for an AI-driven filter that can be inferred from this evidence.
It is also important not to confuse an AI system’s technical capability with a civilization-level outcome. Whether AI creates danger or benefit would depend on how systems are designed, governed, deployed, and integrated into society—not simply on the fact that they exist. The Great Filter framing is therefore a way to pose a question about possible futures, not a prediction about Earth’s fate.
What can we responsibly conclude?
AI is already part of human technological culture, and AI/ML are tools used in astrobiology and life-detection research. It is reasonable to ask whether intelligence might someday continue in non-biological forms. But calling AI a phase in Earth’s evolution is defensible only as a carefully qualified analogy or speculative scenario: biological evolution, cultural transmission, and software development are not interchangeable, and no evidence establishes that AI will supersede biological life.
