In a six-week project to let AI agents submit and publish articles with automated moderation, AiOps Enabler says four bugs surfaced: a permanent validation failure was treated as retryable, stale state overwrote newer updates, generated onboarding code contained a working API key fallback, and HTML entities broke category matching. The author’s account, published on DEV Community on August 26, 2026, shows how small mismatches between what a system displays, stores, and communicates can derail an otherwise automated workflow.
What the four bugs had in common
Each failure came from a boundary in the publishing workflow: the API’s response contract, the ownership of saved state, the handling of credentials, or the transformation of text. The agent exposed these problems by following the system’s literal behavior. The examples below are the author’s account of one project, not an independently reviewed study or a general measure of agent reliability.
| Failure class | What happened | Behavior or consequence reported | Author-described mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|
| HTTP contract | A validator rejected a redirecting source URL but returned HTTP 503. | The agent retried four times, consuming a moderation call on each attempt. | Return HTTP 422 with a reason code explaining that the URL redirected and that the client should cite the final destination. |
| State consistency | An outer run saved an old copy of state after an inner publish function had already saved newer updates. | Publishing succeeded for seven consecutive runs, but the agent did not join discussions. | Remove the outer save so there is one writer for the file; log skip decisions. |
| Secret handling | A generated starter script used a real working API key as the default when an environment variable was missing. | The author reports committing the fallback to a public repository. | Require a configured environment variable with no fallback; add a custom secret-scanning pattern with push protection. |
| Data normalization | Imported category text retained HTML entities, while the interface displayed decoded text and the API compared the stored string exactly. | Submissions failed with no_matching_category despite the visible category name appearing correct. |
Normalize values at the system boundary so stored and compared values agree. |
Why an invalid request kept getting retried
The platform deliberately rejected redirected source URLs as an SSRF hardening measure. But it returned HTTP 503, a status that the agent treated as a temporary failure. The author says the agent retried the same request four times, each time using a moderation call.
The correction was to return HTTP 422 and a reason code that explained the redirect and asked the client to cite the final destination. The author’s rule of thumb was: “if retrying cannot fix it, it’s a 4xx.” That is useful advice for this particular situation, not a universal rule for every API: the status and message should accurately describe the failure and what a client can do next.

How a second save erased newer state
The agent could publish, but it was not joining discussions. The author traced the problem to two separate read-modify-write paths: the outer run loaded state, an inner publish function independently loaded and saved updates, and then the outer run wrote its older copy over the newer state. The author says this went unnoticed for seven consecutive successful publishing runs.
The reported fix was to remove the outer save, leaving one writer for the file. This prevents a later stale write from replacing the inner function’s updates. The author also says a quiet “no stored facts — skipping” message made the issue difficult to see and recommends logging skips rather than letting them pass silently.

How an onboarding example exposed a credential
The generated starter script looked up an environment variable but also supplied a default value. According to the author, that default was a real, working API key, and the code was committed to a public repository. A fallback can make a missing configuration appear harmless while embedding a usable credential in the example.

Why a category looked right but failed exact matching
Imported WordPress category data retained HTML entities. The admin interface rendered the decoded category name, but the API compared the stored string exactly. As a result, the name the agent could see differed from the value the API matched, and submissions returned no_matching_category.
The author’s recommendation is to normalize values at the boundary, so the representation displayed to users and the representation used for storage and comparison are consistent. This kind of mismatch is easy to miss when a user-facing view silently decodes or transforms imported data.

What this account suggests about testing agent workflows
The author argues that agents can serve as a useful, unforgiving test harness because they follow API contracts literally: they retry a 503, submit the category name they were given, and may not infer an undocumented workaround. In the author’s framing, that literal behavior made ambiguous or inconsistent contracts visible. The post does not report a controlled comparison with human users, so this should be read as a case-derived observation rather than a claim that agents are universally more reliable or more revealing testers.
