AI agents are not merely trying crypto once and disappearing. Chainalysis reports that 89.3% of qualifying wallets first funded in the second quarter of 2026 received another deposit within 30 days, up from 70.6% for wallets first funded in the third quarter of 2025. The result is a strong repeat-funding signal for machine-to-machine payments—but it is not proof that every payment represented useful, independent commerce.

What the 89.3% refill rate measures

The statistic covers x402 wallets first funded in Q2 2026 that also transacted on at least two separate days. Of those already active wallets, 89.3% received another deposit within 30 days. It therefore measures repeat funding among engaged wallets, not the percentage of all x402 wallets that became repeat users.

Chainalysis recorded more than 138 million x402 transactions on Base by the end of its 2026 reporting period. Payments remain extremely small: more than 87% were between $0.0001 and $0.10 during the 16 months ending September 2026. That pattern fits automated API calls better than conventional consumer checkout.

Why agents need repeated wallet funding

An agent that calls paid services continuously consumes a balance. It may query a data API, send a prompt to a model, run code analysis, or retrieve context many times an hour. Once its USDC balance falls below an operator-defined threshold, a controller can fund the wallet again so requests continue without a human entering card details or renewing a subscription.

Usage is becoming faster as well as more persistent. Chainalysis puts the median time from seed funding to an agent’s first x402 spend at 18 minutes by Q3 2026. Sixty-seven percent of Q3 2026 wallets spent within one hour of funding, compared with 4% in Q3 2025. Those figures indicate that funding and spending are increasingly connected operational steps rather than separate, occasional events.

How x402 lets an agent pay an API

The Coinbase x402 whitepaper describes x402 as an open payment standard for autonomous payment for API access, data and digital services. It uses HTTP status 402, “Payment Required,” as a machine-readable challenge.

  1. The agent sends a normal request. It asks an API for data or computation without presenting a conventional API key or subscription credential.
  2. The service returns payment requirements. If the request lacks valid payment, the server responds with HTTP 402 and details such as the amount, asset, destination and network.
  3. The wallet signs authorization. A programmatic wallet holds USDC or another supported cryptoasset and signs the payment payload under the agent’s spending rules.
  4. The agent retries with payment. The client sends the signed authorization with the request.
  5. The service verifies and broadcasts. The provider checks the authorization and submits the on-chain payment before returning the requested API response.

This design replaces account creation, API-key storage, recurring plans and manual invoices with a per-use authorization. The x402 wallet documentation says wallets can let agent buyers transact without creating accounts or managing credentials, and identifies Coinbase Developer Platform’s Wallet API as a recommended option for programmatic payments and key management.

What agents are buying with USDC

Chainalysis identifies several kinds of x402 spending:

  • AI model inference
  • Code review and security analysis
  • Financial intelligence
  • Data and search APIs
  • Agent frameworks and tool catalogs
  • Gaming services
  • Token issuance
  • Gambling and other digital services

The report says information-focused services and AI infrastructure became more durable categories as early speculative activity faded. The x402 whitepaper gives market-data APIs, context retrieval, cloud resources, AI inference and pay-per-article access as examples of services that can be sold per request.

Where the activity is concentrated

Geographic attribution is uneven, but the available breakdown shows different markets using x402 for different purposes. The United States accounted for 30% of geographically identified agent-to-service transactions. It represented 88.1% of geolocated AI model-inference payments, 41.8% of payments to agent frameworks and tool catalogs, and 23.2% of payments to data and search APIs.

Chinese-linked entities accounted for about 90% of geographically attributed security and code-analysis payments, much of it involving AgentLISA. These percentages describe attributed payments, not the nationality of every participant or the location of every server.

Is the refill activity real commerce or wash activity?

A refill proves only that a previously active wallet received more funds. It does not prove that the payer and service provider were independent businesses, that the service produced useful output, or that revenue exceeded network and infrastructure costs.

A July 2026 academic study, as reported by CryptoSlate, classified 21.2% of 136.7 million Base settlements as fictitious, including self-payments and closed loops. The same report said 63.78% of settlements occurred within funding-linked wallet clusters. Those figures should be treated as secondary reporting until the underlying paper is independently checked, but they are an important qualification: some apparent demand may be testing, self-financing, incentives or synthetic volume.

  • SEAMLESS FIRMWARE UPDATES & 30-DAY MONEY-BACK GUARANTEE — Apply security updates without resetting your wallet or migrating funds. Backed by Amazon's 30-day money-back guarantee — your purchase is risk-free.

The two findings can coexist. Repeat funding and rapid spending show that operators are returning capital to active wallets; they do not by themselves establish sustainable, independent demand.

x402 versus conventional billing

x402 changes the unit and mechanics of payment rather than simply adding crypto to a card checkout:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Payment unit: x402 is designed for a charge per request; conventional subscriptions charge on a recurring schedule.
  • Authorization: an agent can sign a machine-approved payment; card billing commonly assumes a human-controlled account and stored payment credential.
  • Transaction economics: x402 targets micropayments as small as the fractions of a cent seen in the Chainalysis distribution, while card rails are generally built around larger transactions and network fees.
  • Settlement asset: x402 commonly uses USDC or another cryptoasset on a supported chain rather than a fiat card balance.
  • Account model: the protocol is intended to work without creating a customer account or issuing an API key for every service.
  • Reversals and controls: on-chain payments do not use the same chargeback model as cards, so operators need explicit wallet limits, allowlists, monitoring and compliance controls.

What the numbers mean for builders

For service providers, the refill trend suggests that an agent that succeeds once may become a recurring customer if pricing, latency and reliability are predictable. For agent developers, the 18-minute median to first spend and the 67% one-hour spending rate imply that funding logic must be ready during initial deployment, not added after an agent is in production.

Builders should separate wallet funding from service authorization, set per-transaction and daily limits, log every 402 challenge and signed response, and monitor related wallets for circular flows. Analytics and attribution are especially important when many agents share funding sources or when a service’s apparent volume could include self-payments.

Why the headline matters—but should not be overstated

Hoolie Tejwani of Coinbase Ventures describes AI agents as “economic actors where every agent is effectively a new ‘user’ of the blockchain.” BlackRock’s Will Su points to potential demand for “frequent, low-value payments around the clock.” Circle characterizes card rails as suited to consumer-prompted agent payments and stablecoin rails as suited to machine-to-machine settlements too small for card economics.

The refill rate is consistent with that emerging pattern: agents are being funded, spending tiny amounts quickly, and receiving fresh balances. Whether those flows mature into profitable, independent markets remains an open question that requires separating genuine service consumption from synthetic settlement activity.
