AI agents could weaken travel marketplaces if they become the place people discover and book trips, leaving platforms to supply inventory while someone else owns the customer relationship. Airbnb has identified that risk in its 2025 Form 10-K, but it is also adding AI to its own search, hosting and support tools. Those moves make Airbnb a plausible contender—not a proven winner. The outcome depends on whether it can keep customers, distinctive stays and reliable booking support connected when the interface changes.
How could AI agents threaten travel businesses?
A travel agent powered by AI can take a request such as “find a quiet place near the coast for four people next weekend” and turn it into a shortlist, compare options, and potentially book one. If people begin that process in a general-purpose assistant rather than on a travel marketplace, the marketplace risks losing the first and most influential part of the customer journey.
That creates a strategic problem even if the agent still relies on a marketplace’s listings. The agent may control which options users see, how they are compared, and which service receives the booking. A travel platform could then become an inventory supplier with less influence over customer loyalty, repeat bookings and marketing costs.
Airbnb’s 2025 Form 10-K explicitly describes this as a competitive risk. It says AI-driven travel search, planning and booking could intensify competition. If Airbnb does not adapt, or if consumers move to AI platforms where Airbnb has little presence, the company says it could face lower market share, fewer direct bookings and higher marketing expenses. The filing identifies possible outcomes; it does not predict that they will happen.

What would determine whether an agent helps or hurts a travel platform?
The interface is only one part of a booking. A useful agent must connect a traveller’s request to bookable inventory, complete a transaction correctly, and help when plans change. That leaves travel businesses competing across several linked capabilities:
- Discovery and customer relationship: Does the traveller return to the platform, or does an outside assistant mediate every search?
- Inventory: Does the platform offer stays or travel options that are difficult to substitute with a generic list of results?
- Execution: Can the service confirm the booking and help with questions, changes, cancellations or problems?
- Trust and accountability: Does the traveller know what is being booked, who is handling payment and data, and where to turn if something goes wrong?
- Operating efficiency: Can AI improve service without creating errors or a worse customer experience?
These factors explain why a strong language model alone may not decide the contest. Priceline Chief Technology Officer Sejal Amin described the company’s strategy this way: “Our conviction from the start was that the real advantage in AI travel would not come from the model alone, but from connecting it to the context, inventory and deals that make travel bookable.” That is a company executive’s view, but it captures the practical distinction between answering a travel question and fulfilling a trip.

Why could Airbnb still benefit?
Airbnb has a possible defense: put AI inside the service that already has its listings, booking relationship and support operation instead of leaving the whole interaction to an outside agent. If its tools help guests identify suitable homes, help hosts manage listings and handle common support issues, AI could make the marketplace more useful and less costly to operate.

The company has been testing natural-language discovery and questions about listings and locations, as described in its Q4 2025 results. In its Q2 2026 results, Airbnb said its models could generate highlights from listing descriptions and reviews. It also said it planned AI-generated comparisons between homes and was rolling out host tools for listing creation and pricing or earning information. These announcements show product development, not evidence that customers are choosing Airbnb more often because of AI.

Airbnb also reported operational gains from its support assistant. In Q2 2026, it said nearly 45% of issues that began with the assistant were resolved without a human agent, while support-related cost per booking was down about 16% year over year. These are company-reported figures. They are not measures of Airbnb’s total support cases, and they do not establish higher booking growth, stronger retention or protection from third-party agents.
For historical context, Airbnb’s Q1 2026 results said more than 40% of issues handled through its AI Assistant were resolved without a human agent and that cost per booking was down about 10% year over year. The Q1 description referred to guests contacting support through the AI Assistant, while Q2 referred to issues beginning with it; the figures use different descriptions and should not be treated as a directly comparable trend. Q1 also said Airbnb estimated that AI coauthored nearly 60% of engineers’ code, which indicates internal use rather than an advantage in winning bookings.

Airbnb’s 2026 Summer Release described an assistant available in 11 languages and interactive cards for resolving issues in chat. The release called it the “best AI support assistant in travel,” citing a third-party comparison conducted in March–April 2026 across six major US travel platforms. That is Airbnb’s characterization of a limited comparison, not proof of a lasting competitive lead across the travel industry.

What are other travel companies doing?
Airbnb is not the only company trying to put AI into travel discovery, planning or service. Product announcements establish that competitors are building these capabilities, but they do not by themselves establish current availability everywhere or prove that the features produce durable advantage.

For readers, the key distinction is between an announced feature and a demonstrated shift in market power. A platform can ship useful AI and still lose control of customer discovery; an outside agent can produce convenient recommendations but still depend on travel companies to provide inventory and fulfill bookings.

Trust could slow the handoff from recommendations to autonomous booking. Expedia Group reported results from a YouGov survey it commissioned among more than 5,700 adults in the United States, United Kingdom and India, conducted March 10–25, 2026. In that survey, 68% preferred booking with a trusted travel brand over an AI chatbot or agent even when AI booking was available, and 66% said they would not trust an assistant to buy or book anything on their behalf. Only 8% said they felt comfortable booking through an AI platform.
Respondents also cited concerns that help explain the reluctance: 57% cited loss of control, 57% cited data or payment privacy concerns, and 56% cited possible misuse of personal data. These are sponsor-published survey findings about stated attitudes in three countries at a particular time—not global adoption rates or observed booking behavior. Still, they point to a practical requirement: an agent that can make a recommendation may not be trusted to spend money or make a consequential choice without clear user control.

Product launches and support savings are useful signals, but they do not answer whether Airbnb can hold its position if agents become a common way to plan travel. More persuasive evidence would connect AI deployment to customer and marketplace outcomes over time.
- Discovery: Whether AI features lead to more useful searches and repeat use within Airbnb, rather than only shifting the starting point to another service.
- Booking and marketplace health: Whether direct customer relationships and bookings remain resilient as external agents gain adoption.
- Fulfillment: Whether guests and hosts can complete bookings and resolve changes or problems reliably through AI-assisted service.
- Trust: Whether customers are willing to give an assistant authority to book, and whether the platform makes payment, data use and accountability clear.
- Economics: Whether lower support costs accompany good service and stronger customer outcomes, rather than serving as an isolated efficiency measure.
The evidence available points in both directions: Airbnb’s filing recognizes the possibility of losing discovery and direct bookings, while its product work shows an effort to embed AI into its marketplace and operations. Competitors are building travel-specific assistants, and survey respondents have expressed reservations about letting AI book on their behalf. None of those facts settles who will control travel bookings. Airbnb could still be a winner if it makes its inventory, trusted transactions and support valuable inside an AI-mediated journey—but the announcements and operating figures so far are not proof that it has done so.
