AI agents use websites and desktop apps because a screen can provide a route into software that has no usable integration. But clicking through a human-facing interface is a compatibility path, not automatically the best way to automate a task: APIs expose more structured controls when available, while screen-based agents must interpret what they see and act through a separate execution layer. For many workflows, the strongest design may combine both.
Why do AI agents click through software?
Many useful systems do not expose an API an agent can access. A computer-use agent can sometimes reach them through the same visible interface a person uses: it inspects a screen, chooses an action such as clicking, scrolling, or typing, and checks the result. Microsoft Learn describes this as a way to complete tasks “even when there’s no API to connect directly to the system.”
That reach can be useful for long-tail or older software, or for tasks that depend on interacting with a site or application as a user would. Microsoft lists data entry, invoice processing, and data extraction among possible use cases. Those are examples from vendor documentation, not independent evidence that every such workflow is dependable in production.

Interface access does not mean an agent has universal access to every application. The application must render in the supported environment, and a client-side executor must be able to carry out the model’s actions and return the updated state. OpenAI described its Computer-Using Agent as working from screen pixels and acting through a virtual mouse and keyboard; it framed the approach as allowing digital tasks without OS- or web-specific APIs.

What happens during computer use?
Screen-based computer use is a repeated perception-and-action loop, not an invisible connection to an application’s internal data.
- Observe: The system captures a screenshot or otherwise obtains the current visual state.
- Choose: The model interprets that view and proposes an interface action, such as clicking a control, typing text, or scrolling.
- Execute: A client-side handler or browser driver performs the action in the target environment.
- Check: The system captures the new state and provides it to the model so it can decide what to do next.
Google’s Gemini API documentation describes this pattern: send a prompt and screenshot, receive a suggested UI action, execute it in a client-provided environment such as Playwright, then capture a fresh screenshot and repeat. The developer must supply both a secure execution environment and the code that handles actions. A model that can suggest clicks is therefore only one part of a functioning computer-use system.

Browser automation and desktop computer use share this basic idea but do not imply the same coverage. Tool support varies: an implementation may control a browser, a Windows desktop, or another particular environment, rather than arbitrary software on every device. Anthropic’s browser-use documentation also identifies latency, visual accuracy, and prompt-injection risk as concerns for browser executors.
Should an agent use a website, an API, or both?
Use the interface that best fits the task and the available access. An API is generally a more structured machine interface; screen interaction can reach systems without a suitable API; a hybrid agent can use each where it fits. Neither the existence of a website nor a benchmark result proves that a particular integration will be available, reliable, or safe for a real account.

| Approach | Task coverage | Reliability considerations | Integration needs | Security and oversight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct API | Works for operations exposed by an accessible API. It may not cover a workflow or system whose needed functions are unavailable through that interface. | Uses structured inputs and outputs rather than relying on visual interpretation. Actual reliability still depends on the API, the integration, and the workflow. | Requires a usable API and client integration, including appropriate authentication and permissions. | Access can be limited to API operations and data, but permissions and consequential actions still need careful control. |
| Browser or desktop UI | Can reach visible controls in supported applications, including some systems without a direct integration. | Depends on visual state, layout, authentication, and multi-step interaction, as well as the action executor. A changed or ambiguous screen can derail the loop. | Requires a supported browser or computer environment, action execution, and capture of updated state. | The agent may be able to read or change whatever the signed-in session can reach. Scope sites, accounts, and actions, and supervise consequential work. |
| Hybrid API plus UI | Can use APIs for operations they expose and the interface for steps that require it. | May avoid some visual steps, but still inherits interface-related failure modes wherever it uses the UI. Its overall performance depends on the particular implementation. | Requires API integrations plus a UI execution path and logic to route work between them. | Both access paths need bounded permissions and oversight; combining them does not itself make the system safer. |
One benchmark study supports considering hybrid designs, but not treating them as a universal rule. In “Beyond Browsing: API-Based Web Agents,” published in Findings of the Association for Computational Linguistics: ACL 2025, Yueqi Song, Frank F. Xu, Shuyan Zhou, and Graham Neubig compared API-only, browser-only, and hybrid agents on WebArena. The authors reported that API-based agents outperformed browser-only agents, and that hybrid agents did better nearly uniformly across tasks. In that experiment, the hybrid agents achieved a 38.9% WebArena success rate, an absolute improvement of more than 24.0 percentage points over web browsing alone. Those are results on one benchmark under that study’s setup, not a forecast for other applications or production workflows.
How much do computer-use benchmark scores tell you?
Benchmarks measure performance on their defined tasks and setups; scores from different benchmarks are not interchangeable measures of real-world reliability. OpenAI’s January 23, 2025 Computer-Using Agent release reported success rates of 38.1% on OSWorld, 58.1% on WebArena, and 87% on WebVoyager. These are figures reported by OpenAI for that release, not current cross-product rankings. The release characterized OSWorld as testing control of full operating systems, described WebArena and WebVoyager as browser-task benchmarks, and called WebVoyager tasks relatively simple compared with more complex WebArena tasks. OpenAI also said the agent still needed improvement on complex WebArena tasks.

A benchmark score does not establish that an agent can safely finish a task in your account, with your permissions, site layout, authentication steps, and consequences for mistakes. Evaluate the specific workflow and environment you intend to use rather than translating a published percentage into a guarantee.

It can be given access to a signed-in session, but that makes the agent’s reach a security concern: it may encounter private data, controls that change account state, or hostile instructions embedded in page content. A University of Washington study page reports experiments conducted in late January and early February 2026 on macOS Sequoia. Under the researchers’ test conditions, they demonstrated cross-origin data theft in ChatGPT Atlas Agent Mode. The page also describes prompt-injection preconditions in some other tested browsers if an injection succeeds. These findings are bounded by the tested releases, environment, and attack setup; they do not establish that all agentic browsers were compromised in the same way.

The study explains prompt injection as “an attack enabled when an agent misinterprets data as additional instructions.” In practice, page content should be treated as potentially untrusted input, not automatically as a valid instruction from the user. Security controls reduce exposure, but do not prove that a model, browser driver, or deployment is immune to mistakes or attacks.
How to reduce risk and make a deployment more dependable
Use computer control only for a defined task, in an environment designed to contain mistakes. Microsoft’s Copilot Studio documentation recommends dedicated machines, least-privilege accounts, trusted-website allow lists, and limiting installed applications. Google advises a sandboxed virtual machine or container, describes safety decisions that can allow, require confirmation for, or block an action, and recommends close supervision for important tasks. These are vendor recommendations, not a certification that a deployment is secure.
- Limit what the agent can reach. Use a dedicated environment, a narrowly scoped account, and an allow list of trusted sites where appropriate. Avoid giving the agent a logged-in session with unrelated sensitive data or broad administrative authority.
- Make the task explicit and bounded. Give clear, specific, stepwise instructions and define what the agent must not do. Microsoft’s documentation recommends this kind of instruction to improve accuracy.
- Require confirmation for consequential actions. Keep a person in the loop for payments, sending messages, changing permissions, deleting data, or other actions that are hard to reverse. Google advises close supervision for important tasks and cautions against using computer-use tools for critical decisions, sensitive data, or actions where serious errors cannot be corrected.
- Test the actual workflow. Check how the agent responds to failed logins, changed layouts, unexpected dialogs, ambiguous choices, and untrusted page content. Confirm that its executor captures the resulting state and that failures stop safely rather than continuing blindly.
- Prefer structured access when it fits. If a suitable API can perform a step with less ambiguity and a narrower permission scope, consider using it for that step and reserving UI control for what the API cannot do.
Choosing the right interface
Start with the task and its risk, not with the assumption that an agent should imitate a person. If a suitable API exposes the needed operations, it is often a clearer machine interface to integrate. If the system lacks an accessible API but the workflow can be performed in a supported UI, computer use can bridge that gap—provided the execution loop, environment, and supervision are adequate. A hybrid design is worth considering when a workflow genuinely spans both kinds of access. In every case, limit permissions to what the task needs and keep human approval around actions whose errors matter.
