Secure an AI agent by layering controls rather than trusting the model: deny access by default, expose only task-specific tools and resources, run generated code in an isolated environment, keep valuable credentials outside that environment, require human approval for high-impact side effects, and log every decision and result. Sandboxing limits where an agent can operate; permissions limit what it can attempt; credential isolation limits which identities it can use; approval policies decide when a person must authorize an action.
What AI-agent security has to control
An AI agent can interpret a request, choose tools, generate code, call external services and make changes over multiple steps. That autonomy creates several separate security questions:
- What can the agent see? Files, records, prompts, memory, environment variables and network responses may contain sensitive information.
- What can it do? Tool calls may read, write, delete, send, purchase, publish, deploy or administer.
- Which identity does it use? A token with broad permissions can turn a small model mistake into a large incident.
- Where does code execute? Generated code can use every file, credential and network route available to its runtime.
- Who decides whether an action is acceptable? Automatic checks can enforce rules, but high-impact decisions often need a person.
A robust design treats these as independent layers. Model behavior is not a security boundary: Anthropic’s security guidance says behavior is inherently not a security control. Enforce limits with credentials, network policy, sandboxing and approvals at the infrastructure and execution layers.

Permissions: start with a deny-by-default policy
Permissions define the tools, files, identities and resources exposed to an agent. OWASP recommends least privilege, per-tool scoping, separate tool sets for different trust levels and explicit authorization for sensitive operations. Begin with no access, then add only what the documented task requires.

Scope every tool and resource
Do not grant a general-purpose shell, unrestricted filesystem or wildcard API access when the task needs one operation. Specify the tool, operation, resource and data direction separately. For example, an agent that summarizes support tickets might receive read-only access to a ticket collection and a write-only tool that drafts a response; it should not receive a delete endpoint, customer-export capability or production shell.
- Allow only named directories or records, not an entire home directory or database.
- Separate read, create, update and delete operations.
- Constrain commands to an allowlist of binaries and arguments where shell execution is unavoidable.
- Restrict hostnames, URL schemes, ports and HTTP methods for network tools.
- Use different tool sets for low-trust retrieval, editing and administrative work.
Separate identities by privilege
Use a read-only identity for inspection and a distinct, narrowly scoped identity for approved writes. Keep production, tenant-administrator and infrastructure credentials out of the agent environment unless the task absolutely requires them. A user-context authorization model is preferable when an extension must act on behalf of a person: the operation should inherit that person’s permitted scope rather than silently using a more powerful service account.
Review permissions as task scope changes
Permissions should be calculated for the current job, not treated as a permanent profile. A code-review agent, data-export agent and deployment agent need different capabilities. Remove temporary grants when the job ends, and make policy changes auditable. Wildcard permissions and arbitrary code execution without sandboxing are specifically warned against in OWASP guidance because they defeat meaningful least privilege.

What sandboxing protects—and what it cannot
Sandboxing supplies a technical execution boundary around processes and generated code. OpenAI’s sandbox documentation states that agent-generated code can access the files, credentials and network available to its environment. The practical response is isolated compute, separate environments for users or workloads and outbound access limited to approved endpoints.
Build independent boundaries
A useful sandbox design separates more than the process. Consider independent boundaries for:
- Filesystem: mount only a temporary workspace and required read-only inputs; keep host files and unrelated users’ data unavailable.
- Process: isolate the agent from host processes, device nodes and privileged system interfaces.
- Network: deny outbound traffic by default and allow only documented services through an egress policy.
- Project or tenant: prevent one user’s run, memory or artifacts from being visible to another.
- Identity: run with a dedicated, non-administrative identity and no inherited production session.
Isolation limits blast radius when code is buggy, manipulated or malicious. It does not decide whether an action is authorized. A sandboxed process can still misuse any credential or tool exposed inside it, read every mounted file or exfiltrate data through an allowed endpoint.

Keep application secrets outside the sandbox
Long-lived application keys should remain in a vault or secrets manager, with a trusted proxy brokering narrowly approved operations. OpenAI’s guidance warns that injecting a stored secret into the environment still exposes that secret to agent-generated code. Prefer short-lived, scoped tokens, rotate and revoke them, and return only the minimum response data needed for the task. The agent should request an operation from the proxy, not receive a master key that can be reused for unrelated calls.
When an agent must ask for human approval
Automatic guardrails and human review serve different purposes. OpenAI’s guidance is explicit: use guardrails for automatic checks and human review for approval decisions. Guardrails can validate inputs, outputs and tool calls; human review should pause a run before consequential side effects.
Require review for high-impact actions
Pause before an agent performs any action that is destructive, financial, administrative, externally visible, irreversible, ambiguous or outside the original scope. Examples include cancelling an order, editing a production record, executing a shell command, changing permissions, sending an external message, publishing content, transferring funds or invoking a sensitive MCP action.

For each proposed action, the reviewer should see:
- the calling user or service identity;
- the exact tool and operation;
- the target host, account, file, record or other resource;
- normalized arguments and the data that will be sent;
- the reason and request context;
- the time window in which approval is valid;
- the expected side effect and reversibility.
Bind approval to the exact action
OWASP’s high-impact integrity controls require approval to be bound to the actor, tool, target resource, normalized parameters, timestamp and expiry. Use a short-lived authorization artifact that cannot be reused for a different target or altered arguments. Add replay protection, step-up authentication for critical operations and idempotency keys where the underlying action supports them. An approval for “update ticket 1842 with this text” must not authorize a later request to update a different ticket or send different content.
Choose an approval mode deliberately
Risk-based escalation is usually more usable than interrupting every read operation, but the threshold must be explicit. Low-risk reads can run automatically; writes, external communications and privileged operations can require review. Anthropic’s managed-agent documentation describes policies that can allow a tool call, wait for approval or have the server evaluate it. Its important warning is that automatic mode is not a human checkpoint: an actual human checkpoint requires an always-ask policy on the tool.
A practical implementation sequence
- Write the task contract. List the inputs, permitted outputs, tools, resources, identities and actions that are in scope. Mark destructive, external and irreversible operations.
- Create a deny-first policy. Start with no filesystem, network, command or API access. Add one narrowly scoped permission at a time and record the business reason.
- Split identities. Provide read-only credentials for inspection and separate write credentials for approved mutations. Keep administrative and production identities outside the runtime unless indispensable.
- Deploy an isolated runtime. Use separate compute and project boundaries, a temporary workspace, a non-privileged identity and a restricted process surface.
- Set network egress rules. Permit only approved endpoints and methods. Log each request, response status and policy decision; deny unknown destinations.
- Broker secrets. Store long-lived keys in a vault or trusted proxy. Issue short-lived, task-scoped tokens and return only the minimum data required.
- Classify tool calls. Mark operations as automatic, reviewable or prohibited. Destructive, financial, administrative, externally visible and out-of-scope actions should not pass automatically.
- Construct the approval record. Display actor, tool, target, normalized parameters, context and expiry. Require fresh approval after material changes to any of those fields.
- Fail closed. If policy lookup, approval validation or audit logging is unavailable, do not execute the action. Return a safe error and preserve the pending request for investigation.
- Test adversarially. Try prompt hijacking, goal changes, credential requests, data exfiltration, path traversal, unauthorized hosts, replayed approvals and malformed arguments before enabling production use.
- Review telemetry. Retain the request context, effective permissions, proposed action, approval decision, execution result and failure state so an incident can be reconstructed.
Threats and the control that addresses each one
| Threat | Typical failure | Primary controls |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt or goal hijacking | Untrusted content changes the agent’s objective or instructions. | Separate trusted policy from retrieved content, validate tool arguments and require approval for consequential changes. |
| Excessive agency | The agent can perform more operations than the task needs. | Least privilege, per-tool scopes, separate identities and explicit approval thresholds. |
| Tool misuse | A permitted tool is called with an unsafe target or argument. | Schema validation, normalized parameters, target allowlists and exact-action approval. |
| Identity and privilege abuse | A service token grants administrative or production access. | Read/write separation, user-context authorization, short-lived credentials and no inherited admin sessions. |
| Credential exposure | Generated code reads environment variables, files or injected secrets. | Vault or proxy brokering, minimal token scope, isolated mounts and rapid rotation or revocation. |
| Data exfiltration | Private data leaves through an allowed network route. | Restricted egress, destination allowlists, payload checks and request logging. |
| Memory poisoning | Persisted instructions or records steer future runs. | Tenant-separated memory, provenance checks, review before persistence and narrowly scoped retrieval. |
| Supply-chain compromise | A tool, extension or dependency introduces malicious behavior. | Approved tool registry, dependency review, isolated execution and least-privilege credentials. |
| Approval manipulation or replay | An attacker alters, reuses or broadens a previous approval. | Signed or otherwise integrity-protected, short-lived approvals bound to exact parameters, plus replay protection. |
| Cascading agent failure | One agent’s output triggers unsafe actions in another system. | Independent boundaries, rate limits, circuit breakers, idempotency and human review at high-impact boundaries. |
How to compare agent-security implementations
When evaluating a platform or your own architecture, compare the controls rather than the model’s claimed intentions.

| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Execution boundary | Are filesystem, process, network, project and identity domains isolated independently? |
| Permission granularity | Can policies distinguish tools, resources, users and read versus write operations? |
| Approval behavior | Can the system always ask, escalate by risk, expire approvals and resist replay? |
| Credential handling | Are vaults or proxies supported? Can tokens be short-lived, scoped, rotated and revoked? |
| Observability | Are decision logs, execution telemetry and approval records sufficient to reconstruct an incident? |
| Failure behavior | What happens on timeout, policy-service failure or missing audit storage? Are denial defaults, rollback, idempotency and circuit breakers available? |
OpenAI summarizes the relationship as “Approvals and sandboxing work together”: the sandbox defines where the agent can operate, while approval policy determines when it must ask before crossing a boundary. Neither layer replaces the other.
Auditability, recovery and ongoing operations
Security controls are only useful when operators can verify them. Record the original request or prompt context, policy version, effective permissions, tool-call arguments, approval identity and timestamp, execution result, returned data and any failure state. Protect logs from alteration and separate the authority that approves an action from the process that executes it when practical.
Design recovery before deployment. Prefer idempotent operations so a retry cannot duplicate a payment, message or record change. Use transaction boundaries or compensating actions for multi-step workflows. Add rate limits and circuit breakers so a runaway loop cannot fan out across systems. Revoke exposed credentials, quarantine affected workspaces, preserve logs and review permission changes after an incident. If review is unavailable, the safe behavior is to stop rather than silently downgrade to automatic execution.
