Short answer: Give every AI agent a distinct, machine-readable identity; authenticate that identity with credentials intended for workloads; grant only task-specific, time-limited permissions; record which person or system delegated the work; and retain tamper-evident evidence of actions, approvals, and authorization decisions. Do not make an agent indistinguishable from its operator by sharing a human login or a broad, static API key.
NIST’s current material supports these principles but does not yet define one final, agent-specific compliance standard. NIST’s Digital Identity Guidelines, SP 800-63-4, addresses human digital identity. Separate NIST and NCCoE work is examining practical identity, delegation, authorization, and audit patterns for software and AI agents.
What does “AI agent identity” mean?
Agent identity is the representation of an AI agent as its own identifiable software entity. The identity lets an authorization system distinguish three actors that are often confused:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- The agent: the software process, model-driven workflow, or autonomous service that performs an action.
- The operator or delegator: the person or system that started the task or granted authority.
- The target service: the application, API, database, or tool receiving the request.
NIST’s August 27, 2026 article, “Back to the Future: Why Agentic AI Needs a Strong Identity Foundation,” says agents need unique identifiers, credentials, and associated entitlements bound to the identity of the user or system operating them. That separation allows a resource owner to ask both “Which agent made this change?” and “Who or what authorized that agent to do it?”

Identity is not merely a name in a prompt. It must be usable by authentication, authorization, policy, logging, and revocation systems. A useful record might include an agent identifier, software or deployment version, workload environment, owning team, allowed audiences, credential status, and the delegating user or service.
Should an AI agent use my login or a shared API key?
Normally, no. Reusing a person’s password, session cookie, personal access token, or an organization-wide API key makes attribution unreliable. A transaction may appear to have been performed directly by the person even though an autonomous process made the decision. NIST describes credential sharing as an accountability, privacy, security, and legal risk.
Static API keys and bearer tokens create a second problem: whoever obtains the value can often replay it. Broad keys may allow more operations than the agent needs. Secrets can also leak through source repositories, container images, issue trackers, markdown instructions, debugging output, request traces, or application logs.

If a workflow genuinely needs to act on a user’s behalf, use an explicit delegation flow. The resulting authorization should retain the user’s identity as the delegator while also identifying the agent that exercised the delegated right. Do not erase the distinction by copying the user’s credential into the agent’s environment.
How should an enterprise model identities?

- Human identity: the employee, customer, administrator, or approver authenticated through your normal identity provider.
- Workload identity: the running service, job, container, or host that executes the agent.
- Agent identity: the logical agent instance or agent type authorized to perform defined tasks.
- Resource identity: the API, application, dataset, or tool being accessed.
- Delegation record: the policy decision connecting the operator or system to the agent, scope, audience, and duration.
For ephemeral agents, issue an identity per run or per short-lived workload when practical. For long-running agents, keep a stable logical identifier but bind each execution to deployment metadata, credential version, and runtime context. Either way, avoid one undifferentiated identity for every agent in an organization.
How do I give an agent its own identity?
- Inventory the agent and its actions. Record its owner, runtime, model or workflow version, tools, data classifications, destinations, and actions such as read, create, modify, delete, or approve.
- Register a unique identifier. Create an identifier that is not a human username and cannot be confused with another agent. Include environment or tenant information where collisions are possible.
- Bind execution to a workload identity. Use your platform’s workload-identity mechanism, certificate, or federated token so the running process can prove which deployment is making the call.
- Define delegated authority. Capture the user or system that initiated the task, the purpose, allowed resources, permitted operations, and an expiry or revocation condition.
- Issue an appropriate credential. Prefer a dynamically issued credential with a narrow scope and an intended audience. Keep private material in a protected secret or key store, not in code or plain-text configuration.
- Enforce authorization at the resource. The API or application must check the agent identity, delegation context, scope, audience, policy conditions, and current status. A label in an agent prompt is not an access control.
- Log the decision and result. Record the request, identities, policy decision, tool or resource, outcome, and any required approval.
- Test revocation. Demonstrate that disabling the agent, delegator, credential, or workload prevents further use within the time promised by your risk requirements.
How should access be delegated and limited?
Use least privilege as a task design requirement, not only as a role name. A research agent may need read access to a defined document collection but no export, deletion, or sharing capability. A ticket-routing agent may create or update tickets but should not close an incident or change billing data without a separate approval.

OAuth can carry delegated authorization to a resource server; SPIFFE can provide a workload identity across supported environments. The correct combination depends on your identity provider, resource servers, trust boundaries, and operational maturity.
| Approach | Identity separation | Delegation and policy | Credential exposure | Maturity consideration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shared human credential | Poor; agent and person appear identical | Delegation is implicit or absent | High replay and disclosure risk | Operationally simple but unsuitable for accountable automation |
| Long-lived shared API key | Usually identifies an application, not a run or operator | Often broad and static | High if copied or logged | Common legacy pattern; requires replacement or compensating controls |
| Workload identity with scoped token | Separates the running service from users | Supports resource, action, and audience limits | Lower when tokens are short-lived and protected | Based on established enterprise mechanisms; integration effort varies |
| Explicit delegated authorization | Records agent plus authorizing user or system | Supports task-specific consent and policy | Depends on token handling and storage | Strong fit for user-directed actions; design must cover expiry and revocation |
| Emerging agent-to-agent assertions | Potentially rich identity context | Still subject to interoperability and policy testing | Depends on implementation | WIMSE and the Identity Assertion JWT Authorization Grant are described by NIST as emerging capabilities |
These are design comparisons, not a NIST certification scorecard. Select mechanisms that your resource servers can validate and your security team can monitor.
How should credentials and API keys be protected?
Use the shortest practical lifetime and the narrowest practical scope. A credential for a single task should not remain valid for weeks. Restrict its audience so a token issued for one API cannot be replayed at another service. Separate read and write permissions, and separate high-impact operations such as deletion, money movement, privilege changes, or external publication.

- Keep secrets in a managed secret or key service with access policies and audit events.
- Never place credentials in source code, markdown instructions, tickets, chat transcripts, container images, or unredacted logs.
- Prevent agents from returning secrets in tool output or model-visible context.
- Rotate and revoke credentials when an agent, deployment, owner, or trust relationship changes.
- Use separate credentials for development, testing, and production.
- Monitor unusual volume, destinations, scopes, and failed authorization attempts.
NIST notes that Demonstration of Proof of Possession (DPoP) can mitigate many token-theft scenarios by binding a token to a key held by the legitimate client. DPoP does not replace secure key storage, authorization checks, monitoring, or revocation; it reduces the value of a copied token only when the surrounding implementation validates proof correctly.
What should an AI-agent audit trail contain?
Design events so an investigator can reconstruct intent, authority, and effect. At minimum, capture:
- the agent identifier and execution or workload identity;
- the human or system that delegated or initiated the task;
- the credential, token, or authorization transaction used, without storing secret values;
- the requested resource, operation, audience, and relevant data sensitivity;
- the policy version and authorization decision;
- whether human approval was required, requested, granted, denied, or bypassed under an emergency procedure;
- the tool call, result status, and consequential state change;
- timestamps, environment, deployment version, and correlation identifiers;
- revocation, denial, or policy-change events associated with the request.
Protect logs against alteration and control who can read them. NIST’s NCCoE concept paper raises tamper-proof action and intent logs and non-repudiation as project questions. The cited material does not establish one universal event schema, retention period, or legal-sufficiency test, so your organization must map evidence to its sector, contracts, investigations, and jurisdiction.
Can identity controls stop prompt injection?
No. Identity controls do not make untrusted instructions safe and do not prove that a model will resist prompt injection. They can limit the damage when untrusted content influences an agent by restricting the agent’s authority, audience, resources, and high-impact actions.
Use separate trust zones for retrieved content, tool results, system instructions, and approval decisions. Require a fresh authorization or human confirmation for sensitive actions. Treat data supplied by a webpage, document, email, or tool as untrusted input rather than as a policy update. The NCCoE concept paper explicitly includes prompt-injection prevention and impact reduction among its questions, not as a finalized control standard.

Is there a NIST standard for AI-agent identity?
Not a final, agent-specific compliance standard in the material currently available. NIST SP 800-63-4, published in July 2025, is the current Digital Identity Guidelines revision. It covers identity proofing, enrollment, authenticators, authentication, and federation for people interacting with government information systems over networks. It supersedes SP 800-63-3 and can inform the human side of an agent deployment, but it is not a complete workload- or agent-identity specification.
The NCCoE concept paper published February 5, 2026 proposes a project applying identity standards and practices to software and AI agents. It examines identity metadata, authentication strength, key issuance and revocation, least privilege, dynamic policy, delegation, human approval, tamper-evident logs, non-repudiation, and prompt injection. The project resource hub says a future SP 1800-series practice guide is intended to provide example architectures, implementations, build details, and laboratory lessons. That guide is a planned deliverable, not an already completed standard. The hub reports more than 600 responses to the concept paper.
NIST’s May 18, 2026 summary of responses to the CAISI AI-agent-security request for information says stakeholders broadly agreed that agents introduce novel threats and that established cybersecurity principles need adaptation. It is a response summary, not a quantified prevalence study or binding rule.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How are human identity and agent identity different?
Human identity systems answer questions such as whether a person has enrolled, which authenticator they control, and whether a federated assertion is valid. Agent and workload identity systems answer which software process is running, what deployment it belongs to, which keys or tokens it controls, and what authority was delegated to it.

The two layers should work together. A human may authenticate with your existing identity provider and authorize a task. The resulting delegation can issue a constrained credential to an agent workload. The resource server should evaluate both the agent’s identity and the delegator’s rights, rather than treating either one as sufficient by itself.

What is the credential and agent lifecycle?
Onboarding
Approve the owner, purpose, tools, data classes, environments, and maximum impact before issuing production authority. Record dependencies and an emergency contact.
Operation
Issue credentials just in time where feasible, monitor calls and policy decisions, and review changes to prompts, tools, models, deployment images, and destinations as security-relevant changes.
Suspension and revocation
Be able to disable the agent identity, workload, delegator, token issuer, or individual credential. Test the path and document propagation delays. Revoke on suspected key exposure, unauthorized behavior, ownership change, or retirement.
Retirement
Delete or archive credentials, remove resource grants, preserve required evidence, and ensure scheduled jobs or forgotten integrations cannot silently recreate access.
What common implementation mistakes should teams avoid?
- One account for every agent: prevents meaningful attribution and makes revocation disruptive.
- Permissions assigned only in the orchestration layer: a compromised or alternate path may bypass them; enforce policy at the resource.
- Unlimited token lifetime: extends the window for replay after theft.
- Logging secret-bearing requests: turns audit infrastructure into a credential leak.
- Approval without binding: a human click is not useful evidence if it is not linked to the exact agent, action, scope, and time.
- Confusing identity with compliance: OAuth, SPIFFE, DPoP, a secrets manager, or a hardware-backed key can support controls but does not alone make an agent compliant.
- Ignoring agent-to-agent calls: downstream services also need to know which agent initiated a chain and which user or system authorized it.
How should teams evaluate an architecture?
Use a written review that answers these questions for every agent class:
- Can systems distinguish the agent from its human or service operator?
- Can every consequential action be traced to a delegator, policy decision, and deployment?
- Are credentials scoped, audience-restricted, short-lived where feasible, and revocable?
- Does the design reduce replay and token-theft risk without exposing secrets to prompts or logs?
- Can policy change with task context, data sensitivity, tool risk, and approval state?
- Can investigators reconstruct actions and approvals from protected records?
- Are the selected standards mature enough for the required interoperability, and are emerging features clearly labeled and tested?
The practical objective is accountable automation: an agent should be powerful enough to complete its assigned task, but never so anonymous or broadly authorized that an organization cannot determine what happened, who delegated it, and how to stop it.
