A Gujarati Samachar report published on 13 October 2026 alleges that Ahmedabad garba organisers evaded GST on passes, claims passes priced above ₹500 attract 18% GST, and alleges officials received free passes. Those claims are not independently confirmed by the available evidence: the report’s article page was inaccessible, and no official finding, enforcement order or quantified recovery has been verified. Earlier media reports describe investigations and searches in 2025, but not a final determination of liability.
What is being alleged about Ahmedabad garba passes?
Gujarati Samachar’s 13 October 2026 search-result excerpt frames the matter as GST evasion involving garba passes. It asserts that passes above ₹500 attract 18% GST and alleges that organisers supplied free passes to GST officials. The article page itself was unavailable, so the details could not be checked against its full text; the specific threshold and the allegation about officials remain claims attributed to that report, not established findings. Gujarati Samachar’s report
No official response or independent corroboration of the free-pass allegation was verified. It should not be treated as proof that officials accepted improper benefits or that any organiser committed tax evasion.

The CBIC’s published rate schedule lists services under Heading 9996, covering recreational, cultural and sporting services. It specifies 9% CGST plus 9% SGST/UTGST—a combined 18%—for admission to circus, Indian classical dance including folk dance, theatrical performance and drama. The schedule also lists other recreational, cultural and sporting services at the same combined rate, subject to stated exceptions. CBIC GST rates schedule

This category-level rule helps explain why an 18% rate may be relevant to some event transactions. It does not say that every garba pass above ₹500 automatically attracts 18%. The schedule reviewed does not state that threshold, and it does not settle how a particular event pass, package or sponsorship should be classified. Applying GST to a specific transaction requires its facts and the applicable legal rules.
What earlier reports say about organiser investigations
The 2026 claims follow separate media reports in 2025 describing scrutiny of garba organisers’ records. Those reports establish that searches and investigations were reported; they do not establish a final tax-evasion finding.

Do the food-stall inspections confirm the pass allegations?
No. Ahmedabad Mirror reported on 12 October 2026 that SGST officials conducted surprise inspections of food stalls and eateries after complaints that vendors at pre-Navratri events were refusing to issue bills. That is a separate billing-enforcement matter; it does not confirm the allegations about garba passes or organiser sponsorships. Ahmedabad Mirror’s report

What is known about the outcome?
The available reporting documents allegations in 2026 and reports of searches and accounting checks in 2025. It does not establish a final assessment, penalty, recovery, or adjudicated finding concerning the specific 2026 pass claims. A search or investigation is not itself proof of wrongdoing. Until an official determination or further corroboration is available, the ₹500 threshold and free-pass claim should remain attributed to Gujarati Samachar rather than stated as verified fact.
