An agentic AI model is usually shorthand for an AI system that uses a model to pursue a goal through planning, tool use and multiple steps, adapting its actions based on context or feedback. Strictly speaking, “agentic” describes the behavior and architecture of the surrounding system—not a special class of standalone model. The model may provide reasoning or generate content; software, tools, permissions and an action loop let the system do more than return text.

What does “agentic AI” mean?

An agentic AI system receives or infers a goal, gathers relevant context, chooses what to do, takes one or more actions, and evaluates the outcome. It might retrieve information, call an API, use software, or interact with a digital or physical environment. Depending on the system, feedback can prompt it to continue, revise its plan or stop.

There is no single universally accepted technical definition. The OECD’s 2026 survey of definitions describes agentic properties along several dimensions, while NIST, AWS and Google emphasize overlapping but not identical features. AWS, for example, describes an agent as an autonomous software system that uses an LLM as a reasoning engine to perceive context, plan, execute and adapt toward a defined goal. An agentic system may combine one or more agents with conventional software components.

How does an agentic system work?

A useful way to understand the process is as a loop. Google for Developers describes it as observe, reason, act and feedback:

  • Intended Use & Development: The perfect platform for prototyping robotics or IoT projects, empowering innovators with a unified development experience to mix Arduino Sketches, Python scripts, and containerized AI models in a single interface.
  1. Observe: Gather input or inspect the current state of the environment.
  2. Reason: Interpret the context and select a next action.
  3. Act: Respond, call a tool or change a system state.
  4. Use feedback: Check the result and decide whether to continue, revise the plan or stop.

The loop can be short and tightly bounded or involve many steps. A system does not need every possible capability to be described as agentic; the term covers a range of designs.

How is an agentic AI system different from a chatbot?

A chatbot may answer a question or generate a piece of content in one turn. An agentic system is set up to pursue an objective by choosing a next action, using a tool, examining the result and deciding whether another step is needed. The distinction is not simply whether a model can reason or produce a tool call; it is whether the surrounding system supports a controlled process for pursuing a goal.

For example, a chatbot might draft a reply to an invitation. An agentic workflow could inspect a calendar, suggest a suitable time and, if authorized, create an event. That example illustrates a possible workflow; it does not imply that every agent has calendar access or permission to make changes.

How much agency can a system have?

“Agentic” is better understood as a spectrum than a yes-or-no label. A system that completes one predictable task with narrow permissions has less room to act than one pursuing a longer-term goal in an open-ended environment and revising its plan as conditions change. • Goal scope and duration: Is it completing one fixed task or pursuing a broader goal over multiple steps?
  • Planning: Does it follow fixed steps, or can it revise its plan?
  • Tool and environment access: Can it only retrieve information, make limited changes or take broader actions?
  • Autonomy: How much does it decide without asking a person at each step?
  • Feedback and recovery: Does it check results and retry or change course when something goes wrong?
  • Human control: Does it notify a person, request review or require explicit approval before consequential actions?

NIST treats autonomy—the initiative or discretion an agent exercises without user intervention—as one relevant dimension. It also recommends considering what tool actions enable, access patterns and write permissions, reversibility, reliability, monitoring and risk. These details say more about a system’s practical capabilities than the label “agent” by itself.

What does the label not guarantee?

Calling something agentic does not establish that it is reliable, safe, self-improving or fully autonomous. It does not tell you which tools the system can access, whether it can read or write data, which actions need approval, or how it handles errors. Nor does “agentic” necessarily mean that it learns continuously: some systems use feedback to adjust actions within a task without changing their underlying model.

To understand a particular system, look for a description of its model and system boundaries, available tools, permissions, autonomy, stop conditions and human review points. For actions that are consequential or difficult to reverse, the key questions are what the system can do without approval and how its activity is monitored. Human oversight can range from receiving notifications to authorizing actions before they proceed.

How do major organizations describe agentic AI?

The wording varies by source. NIST’s official page says: “Agentic AI refers to artificial intelligence systems that function as autonomous agents capable of independently making decisions, learning from interactions, and adapting to changing environments.” Google for Developers’ Machine Learning Glossary defines an agent as: “Software that can reason about user inputs in order to plan and execute actions on behalf of the user.” These are institutional definitions, not statements attributed to named individuals.

The definitions highlight related ideas, but neither wording makes every listed capability a universal requirement. When evaluating a system, its actual tools, permissions and degree of autonomy matter more than whether its description uses one particular definition.
