Agentic AI is AI that can pursue a goal by making decisions and taking actions, often across multiple steps or software tools. Unlike a typical chatbot that gives you an answer and leaves the next move to you, an agent may coordinate parts of a task or act on your behalf. How much it can do depends on its tools, permissions, and degree of autonomy; the label does not mean every agent works independently or reliably.

“Everywhere” is an expectation, not an established fact. Agent-like features may spread through specific workflows, but a 2025 Gartner survey found only 15% of surveyed IT application leaders were considering, piloting, or deploying fully autonomous agents. A separate Gartner forecast predicted broader adoption of task-specific agents in enterprise applications by the end of 2026; it was a forecast, not confirmation of what happened.

What does agentic AI mean?

Agentic AI refers to systems that can work toward a goal by making decisions and taking actions. NIST describes agentic AI as systems functioning as autonomous agents capable of independent decisions, learning from interactions, and adapting to changing environments. That is a broad description, not a universal technical standard or a guarantee that a product marketed as an agent can safely complete long-running work. NIST’s agentic AI overview focuses on trustworthiness, evaluation and testing, standards, interoperability, governance, and risk management.

The practical difference is who handles the next step. The UK government’s consumer report says AI tools have mostly supported people’s decisions, leaving coordination, monitoring, and action to the user. An agent can take on some of that work, within the authority it has been given. The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s report on agentic AI and consumers discusses the distinction and consumer considerations.

How is agentic AI different from generative AI?

Generative AI describes the ability to produce content such as text, code, or images. Agentic describes a system’s ability to pursue a goal through decisions and actions. These ideas can overlap: a system may generate text while also using tools to carry out a multi-step task. Generating a response alone does not make a tool an autonomous agent.

Think of autonomy as a practical spectrum, not a formal classification:

  • Suggest: The system proposes a plan or next step; you decide and act.
  • Execute steps: It uses permitted tools to complete parts of a task, perhaps asking for approval at key points.
  • Monitor and adapt: It checks results and adjusts its approach toward an assigned goal, within its permissions.

This is an explanatory spectrum, not a standardized taxonomy. To understand what a particular system can do, check its actual task scope, tool access, permissions, and approval requirements—not just whether it is called an “agent.”

Why might you use an AI agent?

Agents may be useful when a task has a clear goal but involves several steps, changing information, or coordination across systems. For example, an illustrative customer-service workflow might gather relevant account information, draft a response, take an explicitly permitted action, and report what it did. That example explains the pattern; it is not a claim about a tested product.

McKinsey identifies customer service, software development, supply-chain optimization, and compliance as potential areas for agentic AI. These are use cases to explore, not proof of successful production deployments or guaranteed savings. McKinsey’s playbook for deploying agentic AI with safety and security discusses these areas in the context of technology leadership.

Will agentic AI really be everywhere?

There are signs of interest, but the available figures describe different things and should not be treated as proof that agents are already widespread.

Figure What it measures How to interpret it
15% Gartner’s 2025 survey found this share of surveyed IT application leaders were considering, piloting, or deploying fully autonomous AI agents. The survey ran in May and June 2025 with 360 IT application leaders at organizations with at least 250 full-time employees in North America, Europe, and Asia/Pacific. It describes this defined enterprise audience, not all businesses or consumers. Gartner survey release
40% by the end of 2026, compared with less than 5% in 2025 Gartner’s 2025 forecast for the share of enterprise applications that would feature task-specific AI agents. This was a forecast, not an observed end-of-2026 result. It concerns task-specific features in enterprise applications, not fully autonomous agents across every kind of technology. Gartner forecast release

The figures point to a plausible direction—more software may incorporate agents for bounded tasks—but they do not show that people will use autonomous agents everywhere. Adoption also depends on whether systems can perform reliably, fit existing workflows, and be governed safely.

What should you check before trusting an agent?

An agent’s practical authority comes from what it can access and do. The more consequential its permitted actions, the more important it is to understand its boundaries and how its work can be overseen.

  • Data access: Which files, accounts, or personal information can it read?
  • Tool access: Which applications or services can it invoke, and what can it change?
  • Approval points: Which actions require your confirmation, and which can happen without it?
  • Monitoring and recovery: Can you inspect what it did, stop it, or correct an action?
  • Identity and interoperability: How does the system establish what agent is acting, on whose authority, and whether it can work safely across services?
  • Evaluation and governance: Has its behavior been tested for the tasks it is assigned, and who is responsible for managing risks?

These questions reflect the issues raised by NIST and the UK government, rather than a single mandatory control checklist. NIST’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence has also announced a concept paper on applying identity standards and best practices to software agents: NIST’s announcement on identity and authority for software agents.

What agentic AI means for you

Expect the term to describe a range of capabilities, from a tool that performs a few approved steps to a system that can monitor a task and adapt within limits. Whether that is useful—or safe—depends less on the label than on the task, permissions, oversight, and evidence that the system works as intended. Agentic features may become more common in particular applications, but the available survey and forecast figures do not establish that autonomous AI will be everywhere.
