Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
Age of Engineering is a legacy Minecraft 1.10.2 technology pack. The latest release listed by CurseForge is Age of Engineering-1.1.2.zip, dated November 25, 2017. For a compatible installation, use Minecraft Forge 1.10.2-12.18.3.2511 and a Java 8 runtime. You can play locally, assemble a private server from the client files, or use a host that still supports this exact old stack. The important point is version matching: a modern Minecraft profile, a different Forge build, or a newer Java runtime can prevent the pack from launching or make the client and server incompatible.
What Age of Engineering is
Age of Engineering is a technology-and-progression challenge pack rather than a collection of unrelated mods. Its progression is divided into 15 ages. Recipes, machines, and materials are gated by specific blocks or items, so opening a new age changes what you can craft and which automation projects are practical. The result is a deliberate sequence: you establish basic resources, satisfy the current age’s requirements, then work toward the next technological tier.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The pack includes an in-game guide supplied through FTB Utilities. Treat that guide as the authoritative route through the pack instead of assuming that a familiar vanilla or modded recipe still works. Early-game mechanics are intentionally different, and the FTB wiki documents altered smeltery yields. A recipe that appears inefficient in another modpack may be part of Age of Engineering’s intended progression here.
This is also why current modpack advice can be misleading. The project and its Forge target predate current launcher conventions, Java releases, and hosting panels. Instructions written for a recent Minecraft version do not automatically apply to this pack.

Compatibility requirements at a glance
| Component | Required or relevant value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft | 1.10.2 | The pack’s listed Minecraft version; do not select a newer release. |
| Age of Engineering release | Age of Engineering-1.1.2.zip | Latest release listed on CurseForge, dated November 25, 2017. |
| Forge | 1.10.2-12.18.3.2511 | Forge’s recommended/latest build listed for Minecraft 1.10.2. |
| Java | Java 8 | Forge’s repository maps Minecraft 1.16.5 and older, including 1.10.2, to Java 8. |
| Server files | Client mods, config, resources, and scripts folders |
The pack author says to build a normal Forge server and copy these folders from the installed client, not from the downloaded CurseForge zip. |
These values are compatibility targets, not suggestions. If your launcher silently selects another Java executable or another Forge build, correct that before diagnosing crashes. The pack is legacy software, so behavior can vary with the operating system, launcher, Java distribution, and graphics drivers even when the nominal versions match.
Install Age of Engineering on a client
The safest installation is a clean instance dedicated to this pack. Keeping it separate prevents another pack’s configuration files, mods, or Java settings from contaminating the 1.10.2 environment.
Recommended Free Tools
- Obtain the project release. Open the Age of Engineering project and files listing on CurseForge, and choose Age of Engineering-1.1.2.zip for Minecraft 1.10.2. Do not substitute a similarly named file for another Minecraft release.
- Create or select a 1.10.2 profile in your launcher. Choose Minecraft 1.10.2 and install or select Forge 1.10.2-12.18.3.2511. If the launcher offers several Forge builds, use that exact build for the first attempt.
- Set the Java runtime to Java 8. In the launcher’s Java or runtime settings, select a 64-bit Java 8 executable. Do not assume that installing Java 8 is enough: many launchers retain a separate runtime selection per instance. Check the profile that will actually start Age of Engineering.
- Install the pack into that instance. Use the launcher’s import or install option for the downloaded pack, or place its contents in the instance directory according to the launcher’s documented modpack workflow. Keep this instance’s directory separate from vanilla and other modpacks.
- Launch once with no world selected. A first launch lets Forge create its libraries and directory structure. The first startup can take considerably longer than a vanilla 1.10.2 launch while old libraries are downloaded and mods are initialized.
- Allocate memory conservatively. Age of Engineering is a large technology pack, but the cited project and Forge pages do not publish an authoritative minimum or maximum RAM value. Start with a sensible allocation for your hardware, leave enough memory for the operating system, and adjust only after observing actual launch or in-game behavior. More allocated RAM is not automatically better if it causes the operating system to swap.
- Verify the title-screen version before creating a world. Confirm that the profile reports Minecraft 1.10.2 and Forge 12.18.3.2511, then check that Age of Engineering’s mods load without a missing-mod or wrong-version message.
Once the client starts, create a test world and open the FTB Utilities guide. The guide is not optional flavor text: it explains the intended order of progression and helps identify whether a recipe is gated rather than broken.
How the 15-age progression changes play
Gated recipes are the central rule
Age of Engineering limits access to recipes with required blocks and items. You may see a recipe in a mod’s interface but still be unable to craft it because the current age has not unlocked the necessary gate. Work through the guide’s objectives instead of trying to bypass the sequence with an unrelated machine.
Plan around the current age
Each age is a project list. Before spending rare materials, read the next objectives and identify shared prerequisites such as power infrastructure, processing machines, or storage. Building a temporary setup that satisfies one recipe can leave you short of the components needed for the next gate.
Expect nonstandard smeltery results
The FTB wiki describes different smeltery yields for this pack. Do not use yield numbers from a general Tinkers’ Construct tutorial as a guaranteed result here. If an early alloy or metal appears to produce a different amount, consult the pack’s guide and the pack-specific documentation before redesigning your resource chain.

Use a test world for uncertain recipes
A creative or disposable test world is useful for checking machine faces, power connections, and gated recipes without risking the main save. Record the pack version and Forge build with your notes; a test made in another 1.10.2 pack is not evidence that the same recipe is available in Age of Engineering.
Assemble a self-hosted Age of Engineering server
The project owner does not provide a separate server-file archive. The stated method is to install a normal Forge server and copy the client instance’s mods, config, resources, and scripts folders into it. The folders must come from the installed client, not from the original CurseForge zip.
1. Make a clean server directory
Create a directory used only for this server. Avoid a path synchronized by cloud-storage software while you are testing; simultaneous file changes can corrupt a world or lock a configuration file. Keep the directory writable by the account that will run Java.
2. Install the matching Forge server
Download the Forge 1.10.2 installer for build 12.18.3.2511. Run the installer and choose Install server, selecting the new server directory. Forge also documents a headless installation command:
java -jar forge-1.10.2-12.18.3.2511-installer.jar --installServer
Run that command with Java 8. If your installer has a different filename, use the filename you downloaded while retaining the same Forge version. The installer places the Forge server files and libraries in the selected directory.
3. Copy the pack-specific folders
Locate the working client instance, not merely the downloaded archive. Copy these four folders into the server directory:

modsconfigresourcesscripts
Merge folders only when the server directory already contains files created by Forge. Replace conflicting pack configuration files with the files from the client instance so that the two sides use the same recipes, scripts, and mod settings. Do not copy a single mod from a different pack to “fix” a missing feature; that creates a client-server mismatch.
4. Start once and accept the EULA
Start the Forge server from its directory. A typical 1.10.2 installation creates or uses a Forge universal jar; a command such as the following is appropriate when that jar is present:
java -jar forge-1.10.2-12.18.3.2511-universal.jar nogui
The exact generated filename can differ in a launcher or hosting panel, so use the jar installed by your Forge installer. On the first run, the server creates its files and stops or refuses to continue until you accept Minecraft’s EULA. Open eula.txt, change the EULA value to true only if you accept Mojang’s terms, save it, and start the server again.
5. Complete a local connection test
Wait until the console reports that the server is ready, then connect from the same computer using the local address supplied by your Minecraft client, commonly localhost. Join with the identical Minecraft, Forge, and Age of Engineering versions. Create a disposable test world, verify that the guide opens, and confirm that a gated recipe and a representative machine load correctly before inviting anyone.
6. Keep the client and server identical
Every player should use the same pack release and Forge build as the server. If one player updates a configuration file, adds a mod, or changes a script locally, that change can produce missing-mod errors, registry mismatches, or a world that behaves differently from the server. Preserve a copy of the working client folders as a known-good baseline.

A local test does not prove that an internet connection will work. Remote players need a route to the computer running the server, and that normally means configuring the home router and operating-system firewall for the server’s listening port. The official Minecraft server guidance warns that exposing your public IP creates a security risk. Share connection details only with people you trust.

- Options Personalize your character, then fight up-close and personal with melee swings, hang back with ranged attacks, or tank your way through swarms of mobs, by heavy armor
- Use a separate server account where practical. Limit the account’s access to the server directory rather than running everything as an operating-system administrator.
- Allow only the required Java process through the firewall. Do not disable the firewall globally as a troubleshooting shortcut.
- Protect operator privileges. Give administrative access only to trusted players and keep the server console private.
- Back up before opening the world. Stop the server cleanly before copying the world directory so region files are not being written during the backup.
- Test from outside your home network. A friend on another connection can confirm that router forwarding and firewall rules work; testing only with the host computer can be misleading.
If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not be available. In that case, a hosted server or a network service designed for private access may be more practical than repeatedly changing router settings. Do not publish your public address in an open forum.
Renting a server instead of hosting at home
Managed hosting removes much of the operating-system and network work, but it does not remove the need to verify legacy compatibility. BoxToPlay advertises one-click Age of Engineering installation, and PLAYNHOST describes selecting the pack from its CurseForge hosting panel. Those pages show that a hosted route may exist; they do not establish current performance, pricing, availability, or support for every plan.
Before paying, ask the provider to confirm the complete combination: Minecraft 1.10.2, Age of Engineering-1.1.2, and Forge 12.18.3.2511. A panel that lists the pack by name may have a different release, an incomplete server template, or a newer Java runtime selected by default.
| Consideration | Self-hosting | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Direct access to files, configurations, scripts, logs, and Java settings. | Control depends on the panel, SFTP access, and the provider’s plan. |
| Operational work | You install Forge, copy pack folders, update Java settings, monitor logs, and maintain backups. | The provider may supply installation, restarts, and backup tools; verify what is included. |
| Networking | Usually requires home firewall and router configuration for remote players. | The provider generally supplies a public endpoint, subject to its plan and network policy. |
| Version fidelity | You can pin the exact 1.10.2/1.1.2 and Forge 12.18.3.2511 combination. | Confirm that the panel still offers that exact combination before purchase. |
| Cost pattern | Uses existing hardware and bandwidth, with your own electricity and maintenance costs. | Adds a recurring service charge; compare CPU, RAM, storage, location, and backup limits. |
| Recovery and migration | You control world copies and can move the directory yourself. | Check export, SFTP, backup-download, and cancellation policies before committing. |
For a short session with technically confident players, self-hosting offers the most control and no new hosting bill. For a group that needs a server online while the owner is away, managed hosting can reduce maintenance, provided the provider confirms the old Java and Forge stack in writing.

The launcher crashes before the title screen
- Confirm the instance is Minecraft 1.10.2, not a newer profile with the pack files copied into it.
- Check that Forge is 12.18.3.2511 and that the launcher is using Java 8 for this instance.
- Remove only temporary logs or a newly generated test instance after preserving the crash report. Reinstalling repeatedly without correcting the selected Java executable does not solve a runtime mismatch.
- Try a clean instance containing only the pack’s files. A mod or configuration left over from another pack is a common source of registry and dependency errors.
The client reports a missing mod or registry mismatch
Compare the server’s and client’s mods, config, resources, and scripts folders. Recopy them from the known-good client installation, then confirm both sides use Age of Engineering-1.1.2 and Forge 12.18.3.2511. Do not solve the message by downloading a random newer build of the named mod.
The server starts but players cannot join
- Join locally first. If local joining fails, fix the Forge or pack installation before touching router settings.
- Check that the server process is listening and that the operating-system firewall allows it.
- For remote players, verify router forwarding, the public address, and whether the internet provider places the connection behind carrier-grade NAT.
- Make sure the player is using the same pack release, Forge build, and Java-compatible client environment.
A recipe or machine behaves differently from a tutorial
Read the in-game FTB Utilities guide and pack-specific documentation first. Age of Engineering gates recipes and changes some early-game mechanics, including smeltery yields. A general mod tutorial may describe a valid recipe for another version while being wrong for this pack.

The server becomes unstable after an update
Restore the last working copy of the client folders and world backup, then change one variable at a time. Pin the pack and Forge versions instead of allowing a launcher or host panel to auto-update them. Keep a dated note of Java, Forge, pack release, and any changed configuration so you can reproduce the working state.

Backups and maintenance for a long-running world
Legacy packs are especially dependent on stable files because their original installers and hosting templates may disappear. Schedule world backups appropriate to how often your group plays, and retain at least one copy outside the live server directory. Stop the server cleanly before making a full copy; a backup taken while region files are actively written may not restore cleanly.
Back up the configuration and script folders as well as the world. Those files define recipes and progression, so restoring only the world while leaving newer configuration files in place can produce unexpected behavior. Label each backup with the Minecraft version, Forge build, pack release, and date.
When moving between a home machine and a host, transfer the complete server directory or the provider’s documented equivalent. Test the transferred world privately before allowing players to continue, and retain the original copy until the new server has been verified.
Choosing the right setup
- Choose a local client only if you want to learn the 15-age progression by yourself. You need Minecraft 1.10.2, Forge 12.18.3.2511, Java 8, and the 1.1.2 pack release.
- Choose self-hosting if you are comfortable installing a Forge server, copying the four pack folders from the client, managing backups, and securing network access.
- Choose managed hosting if reducing network and maintenance work matters more than having unrestricted filesystem control. Confirm the exact legacy versions, Java selection, resource limits, backup policy, and ability to download or migrate your world.
Whichever route you choose, establish a working single-player instance first. It gives you a known-good client from which to assemble the server and provides a reference when a hosted panel or another player’s launcher reports a version problem.
