To progress steadily in Age of Apes, follow the main quests and City Hall unlocks, then spend resources on buildings, research, and troops that advance a current goal. Keep useful construction and research running when you can, and check each building’s live upgrade panel before committing scarce resources: it shows the benefits, cost, and prerequisites for that level.
How to make progress without wasting resources
Age of Apes is a free-to-play MMO strategy game centered on managing an outpost, developing an army, and competing with other players. The game’s store listings indicate that features can change with updates, so treat older level guides and calculators as references rather than a substitute for what your current game shows.
Think of faster progress as reducing idle time and choosing upgrades that unlock something useful—not simply raising every building as soon as you can afford it. Your main quest and City Hall’s next unlock provide a practical short-term plan. Before spending, compare the upgrade’s benefit and prerequisites with that objective; if it does not help you reach a relevant unlock, quest, troop requirement, or activity, it may be reasonable to wait.

- While away: start an upgrade and research project that support your plan, if resources permit.
- Before combat: train a force suited to the activity and make sure your march capacity is adequate.
- Before spending accelerators: consider whether finishing the timer now completes a meaningful upgrade or event objective.
This is a simple planning loop, not a fixed building order. Requirements, available activities, and your resource balance can differ as your account develops. If a quest points to a facility, check whether that facility also helps with a City Hall gate or troop goal. When several tasks compete for the same Food or Iron, the one that unlocks a new useful function may matter more than a small upgrade with no immediate effect. Conversely, if a main objective is blocked by a prerequisite, advancing that prerequisite is a concrete reason to build it.

Use the upgrade panel as a decision tool, not just a confirmation screen. Read what the next level changes, what it requires, how much it costs, and how long the builder will be occupied. A level number by itself does not tell you whether an upgrade is worthwhile for your account right now. The same applies to research: choose an available technology that supports the next development step instead of starting research simply to keep a timer active.
What each important base building does
Your outpost combines progression gates, the economy, military training, and defense. Use the live upgrade panel for current benefits, prices, and prerequisites, since these can change and older published lists may no longer match your game.
| Building or group | Role | How to prioritize it |
|---|---|---|
| City Hall | Central management hub; its level gates some functional buildings and game modes, and it hosts city buffs. | Check its next unlock and quest requirements. Raise it when doing so advances a useful goal rather than upgrading unrelated facilities indiscriminately. |
| Builder’s Hut | Builder availability determines how many construction jobs can run at once. A builder is occupied during a normal upgrade. | Keep an available construction slot working when resources and a useful upgrade are available. |
| Research Lab | Research supports base and military development, including higher troop levels. | Start a useful technology when one is available; avoid leaving research idle if it advances your current plan. |
| Pilots’, Hitters’, Shooters’, and Wall Breakers’ camps | Each troop category trains in its own camp. | Upgrade and train according to current encounter needs and unlock requirements rather than training every type without a purpose. |
| Parade Ground | Holds troops and determines march capacity. Some upgrades increase troop capacity and, at some levels, marching queues. | Check its current level benefits when your force cannot fit the march you need. |
| Medical Station | Recovers wounded troops. | Include recovery capacity in your plan before committing to repeated combat. |
| Warehouse and economy facilities | The Warehouse stores and protects resources; Food and Iron are common construction resources. Economy facilities and quest rewards help fund development. | Consider storage and income when planning a costly upgrade, rather than spending all available resources without checking the next objective. |
| Defense Walls and Sentry Towers | Provide base defenses. | Develop these when defense matters to your current needs or a stated unlock requirement. |
| Gang Embassy | Can enable reinforcements from gang members. | When available, joining an active gang is a reasonable social and defensive priority. |
Decorations are cosmetic according to the beginner guide, so they are not a progression priority when your aim is to unlock useful facilities. The guides identify Food, Iron, and Batteries as resources used for construction or decorations; check the in-game requirement for the particular item before spending.

Builder time is one of the limits to plan around. A builder is occupied during a normal upgrade, so decide what the next useful construction job will be before the current one finishes or before you leave the game. That does not mean spending resources on any available building to avoid idle time: if no affordable upgrade advances a meaningful goal, waiting for resources can be better than diverting them from a more important requirement. Research has its own progression value, so check it alongside construction rather than treating the builder queue as the whole plan.
The Warehouse matters because it stores and protects resources, while Food and Iron are common costs for development. Batteries also appear among the resources used for construction or decorations in the guides, but the exact requirement depends on the item. Quest rewards can supplement the economy, which makes claiming available rewards part of upgrade planning. Check the amount shown in the game instead of assuming an older building table or third-party calculator has the current price.
A practical daily and downtime routine
Quests, Daily Quests, and Achievements are all described as reward sources. Daily tasks can provide Food, Iron, Batteries, and progress chests; regular quests can provide resources and speed-ups. Colin’s exploration quest system offers further resource opportunities, and higher difficulty can offer better rewards. The actual rewards and availability may vary with game updates, so use the current quest screen as the authority.
- Collect available rewards. Gather production and claim quest, daily-task, achievement, or exploration rewards that are ready.
- Choose the next target. Check your main quest and City Hall’s next unlock before spending resources. Note which building or research requirement actually blocks progress.
- Start construction. Pick a useful upgrade that advances the target, check its current cost and prerequisites in the building panel, and start it if your resources allow.
- Start research. Choose available technology that supports the same development plan, particularly if it helps with military progression.
- Train for your next activity. Select troop types for the encounter you intend to do, while leaving room to recover and replace losses.
- Use accelerators selectively. Short early waits may not be worth accelerating; the 2025 Alucare guide recommends saving early short accelerators. Treat that as a general tip, not a guarantee that saving them is optimal for every event or account.
When you return, check which timers have finished and reassess the next quest or unlock. This avoids letting builders or research sit idle while also preventing you from queueing an upgrade simply because it is available.
Make each check-in answer a few practical questions: What rewards are ready to collect? What is the next quest or unlock? Which requirement is actually holding it up? What can you start now without spending resources needed for that requirement? This keeps the routine useful whether you log in often or only briefly. If an exploration task offers a choice of difficulty, remember that higher difficulty can offer better rewards, but the available guidance does not establish that the harder option is always the best choice for every account. Consider your current force and the reward shown in the game.

Speed-ups are most useful when their timing serves a purpose. The 2025 Alucare guide advises new players to save early short accelerators because early waits are short. That is sensible as a general caution, but it is not a universal rule: a timer that blocks an important unlock or helps complete an event objective may be worth finishing sooner. Check the objective and reward before using an accelerator, and do not assume that every event will make the same use worthwhile.
Choose between active fighter play and a farmer approach
BlueStacks describes two broad approaches. They are not mutually exclusive: a new player can use active combat when troops and recovery resources support it, then lean on quests and economic development while rebuilding.
| Approach | What you do | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Fighter | Actively gather resources and unlock territory by attacking mutants and clearing lairs. | Offers combat and exploration activity, but troop training and healing make this approach resource intensive. |
| Farmer | Emphasize quests, passive base economy, and defense. | Requires less focus on repeated attacking, but centers development on quests and economic growth rather than active combat. |
| Alternating | Fight when your force and recovery supplies support it; otherwise focus on quests, economy, and base development. | Balances active rewards with the need to recover troops and fund continued progression. |
Decide based on four practical questions: how much attention you can give the game, whether your resource income supports training, whether you can recover from troop losses, and whether you want combat or exploration rewards right now. If a series of attacks leaves you short of troops or healing capacity, return to quests and economic development instead of continuing at a loss.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The choice is about the demands each approach puts on your time and resources. Fighter play gives you active targets—mutants and lairs—and can help with territory and resource gathering, but its training and healing burden can also consume the resources needed to keep the base growing. Farmer play puts more emphasis on quests, passive economy, and defense, making it a natural option when you do not want to maintain a steady cycle of attacks and recovery. Neither approach replaces the basic progression loop: quests and City Hall unlocks still help identify what to develop next.
For a new account, alternating can be a practical middle ground. Use combat when the troops you can send and the recovery support you have make the effort reasonable; switch to quests and economic development when replacing losses would stall your next useful upgrade. Before you launch repeated attacks, consider what you hope to gain and whether the available troops can handle the activity. The guidance does not provide a universal threshold for when a force is strong enough, so use the game’s encounter information and your own recovery needs rather than relying on a fixed troop count.
Match troop composition to the encounter
Troop count is only part of a march. The troop categories have distinct roles, and the Parade Ground limits how many troops you can send. Use the battle’s recommended capacity and the live building information rather than assuming that a larger number alone makes a force effective.
| Troop type | Role described in the beginner guide | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Pilots | Maneuver and attack quickly. | Consider them when mobility and quick attacks suit the encounter. |
| Hitters | Fight at close range. | Include them when close-range fighting is relevant to the target. |
| Shooters | Attack from range. | Use them when ranged attacks fit the battle you are preparing for. |
| Wall Breakers | Target walls and sentry defenses. | Train them for encounters where those defenses are the objective. |
These roles are not a complete battle formula: the available guidance does not establish a universally best troop ratio. Check the recommended capacity and your troop facility and research levels, then adjust to the target. After combat, account for wounded troops at the Medical Station and for replacements before starting another costly fight.
Keep training aligned with what you plan to do. Pilots maneuver and attack quickly, Hitters fight at close range, and Shooters attack from range; Wall Breakers are intended for walls and sentry defenses. These distinctions help you avoid treating the camps as interchangeable. If the planned target is not a wall or sentry defense, for example, do not assume Wall Breakers are automatically the right choice simply because they are available. Likewise, a full march is not necessarily the right march if its composition does not fit the activity.

The Parade Ground affects troop capacity and, at some levels, marching queues. If you cannot send the force you need, check the current Parade Ground upgrade benefits. If capacity is adequate but a battle is still costly, review troop roles, facility levels, and research rather than assuming that adding more troops is the only answer. Because the guides do not give a standard composition, use the battle’s recommended capacity and the target’s needs as your starting point, then pay attention to wounded troops and the resources required to heal or train replacements.
Unlocking higher-tier troops: what older checklists can and cannot tell you
Higher-tier troop access depends on building progression. An Age of Apes Guides page dated August 19, 2024 describes the Command Center as essential to unlocking higher-tier troops and lists Food, Iron, Maps, and time requirements by level. Those values are dated references, not a current guarantee: verify the requirements shown in your game before planning a resource budget.
A separate T4 guide dated November 5, 2024 reported the following building levels. The guide itself warns that requirements may vary, so use the list to identify facilities you may need to check—not as a definitive current checklist.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Building | Reported level in the November 5, 2024 T4 guide |
|---|---|
| City Hall | 24 |
| Research Lab | 24 |
| Hitter’s Camp | 20 |
| Shooter’s Camp | 22 |
| Pilot’s Camp | 22 |
| Wall Breaker’s Camp | 23 |
| Intel Station | 23 |
| Defense Walls | 23 |
| Ape’s Tavern | 23 |
| Gang Embassy | 19 |
| Sentry Towers | 22 |
| Command Center | 1 |
Do not begin a long chain of upgrades solely because a dated guide lists a level. Check the Command Center and the relevant buildings’ live upgrade panels for current prerequisites, costs, and timers. If a requirement differs from the older list, follow the in-game requirement.
The table is useful as a planning reminder: higher-tier troop progression can involve more than the troop camp itself. The reported T4 checklist includes City Hall, the Research Lab, several camps, defenses, the Intel Station, Ape’s Tavern, the Gang Embassy, Sentry Towers, and the Command Center. It does not mean every player should immediately start upgrading all of those buildings in that order. Confirm which level is currently required, then identify the next prerequisite and its cost in your own game. The August 19, 2024 Command Center page also lists Maps alongside Food, Iron, and time as requirements by level, so check that resource if it appears in the live panel.
Older level checklists are most helpful when used to see what categories of facilities may matter, not as a promise that every account or current version has identical requirements. Costs, prerequisites, and timers can shift with updates. Avoid stockpiling or spending based only on an old total; plan from the requirement displayed for the specific next level you need.
Common progression mistakes and how to avoid them
- Upgrading everything at once: This can consume the resources needed for a relevant unlock. Tie major upgrades to a quest, City Hall gate, troop need, or other clear benefit.
- Leaving construction or research idle: A builder is occupied during a normal upgrade, so plan the next useful job before leaving the game when resources permit.
- Training without a battle plan: Camps train different troop types. Train for the activity you intend to do and observe the Parade Ground’s march limit.
- Attacking without recovery resources: Combat can create training and healing costs. Pause active fighting when your troops or recovery capacity cannot support it.
- Trusting an old cost or level table as current: The 2024 progression guides explicitly have currency limitations, and the game changes through updates. Confirm volatile costs, unlocks, and requirements in your current game.
- Spending accelerators on short waits by habit: The 2025 Alucare tip favors saving early short accelerators, but the best use depends on the objective and any active event.
- Prioritizing decoration over function: Decorations are described as cosmetic; prioritize facilities that help with progression when resources are limited.
Another easy mistake is to think of “more troops” as a full combat plan. Your march has a capacity limit, and different troop categories have different roles. Consider the target and recommended capacity, and leave enough resources and medical capacity to recover from the activity. A sensible pause to heal, train, or complete quests can protect the progress you have already made.
How to evaluate your next upgrade

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Benefit or unlock: What new function, capacity, or troop access does the panel say this level provides?
- Prerequisites: Does the upgrade satisfy a quest or an actual higher-tier requirement?
- Cost and time: Can you afford it without blocking a more useful near-term target, and is the timer worth occupying a builder?
- Immediate relevance: Will it help with the activity you plan to do next, or can it wait while you collect more resources?
The current in-game panel is the best place to answer those questions. Published calculators and tier lists can become stale after updates, so verify the live values before committing to a long or expensive upgrade.
Apply the same comparison to troop and economy decisions. If combat is the next activity, a camp, Parade Ground, research, or Medical Station may be more relevant than an unrelated cosmetic choice; if you are short on resources, quests and economic facilities may support the next construction target better than another round of training. These are not fixed priorities for every account. The useful choice is the one that addresses a present bottleneck without making the following step harder to afford.

How do I unlock higher-tier troops?
The Command Center is described as essential to higher-tier troop access, and a November 5, 2024 T4 guide reported requirements across several other buildings as well. Treat those levels as dated references. Check the current Command Center and building panels for the requirements, costs, and timers in your game.
Is fighter or farmer play better for beginners?
Neither is universally better. Fighter play means actively gathering resources and unlocking territory by attacking mutants and clearing lairs, but troop training and healing cost resources. Farmer play emphasizes quests, passive economy, and defense. You can alternate, fighting when your troops and recovery resources support it and farming while you rebuild.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I upgrade first in Age of Apes?
Follow the main quest and check City Hall’s next unlock, then upgrade the facility or prerequisite that advances that goal. Use the live upgrade panel to verify the benefit, cost, and prerequisites.
How do I get more resources?
Collect available production and claim rewards from quests, Daily Quests, Achievements, and Colin’s exploration quests. These can offer Food, Iron, Batteries, progress chests, or speed-ups; check the current game for exact rewards.
Should I focus on troops or my base?
Balance both around your next activity. Train troops for battles you intend to do, but account for healing and replacement costs. When troops or resources are low, focus on quests and economic development; when a troop requirement blocks progress, work on its listed camp, research, or other prerequisite.
How do I unlock higher-tier troops?
The Command Center is described as essential to higher-tier troop access. Older T4 guidance also lists several other building requirements, but those levels may vary. Check the current Command Center and upgrade panels for live requirements and costs.
Is fighter or farmer play better for beginners?
Neither is universally better. Fighter play involves attacking mutants and clearing lairs, which can bring combat and exploration activity but requires resources for training and healing. Farmer play emphasizes quests, passive economy, and defense. Alternating lets you fight when recovery resources support it and develop the base while troops recover.
Should I use speed-ups as soon as I get them?
Not automatically. The 2025 Alucare guide advises saving early short accelerators because early waits are short. Consider whether using one will complete a meaningful upgrade or event objective, and check the current goal before spending it.
The Bottom Line
Build toward the next useful quest or City Hall unlock, keep construction and research moving when resources allow, and train troops for the activity you actually plan to do. Use quests and exploration rewards to support the economy, pause combat when recovery becomes costly, and verify older troop and building checklists against the current in-game requirements.
