The ROG Xbox Ally X is one of the most comfortable Windows gaming handhelds available, and its performance is sufficient for many demanding games. After nearly two weeks of use, however, the $999 US price (or £799 in the UK) is difficult to justify unless portable access to Xbox and PC libraries matters more to you than value. This is the ROG Xbox Ally X—the model sometimes mistyped as “X20.”
What the ROG Xbox Ally X gets right
Comfort is the device’s clearest advantage. Pocket Tactics called the form factor excellent for extended play, while FullCleared’s Jason Siu said comfort was the main reason to consider it after nearly two weeks with the handheld. The grips, control placement and overall shape make long sessions less tiring than many flat Windows handhelds.
The hardware includes two USB-C ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack. That gives you room for charging, storage or a display connection while retaining wired audio, although a dock or hub is still useful if you want a monitor, Ethernet and several peripherals at once.

A small control-layout annoyance
Pocket Tactics found that the pause button sits beneath the library button. Pressing the wrong control can launch the Xbox app unexpectedly, an irritating mistake when you are trying to pause a game. It does not undermine the hardware, but it is a reminder that the Xbox-focused interface is layered onto a compact Windows control layout rather than designed from scratch as a console.

Display: sharp and fast, but not OLED
The screen is a 7-inch IPS touchscreen with a 1920×1080 resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio, 120Hz refresh rate and approximately 500 nits of brightness, according to Pocket Tactics’ 2025 review. It is responsive and attractive for a handheld, and the high refresh rate helps menus and supported games feel smooth.
There is no OLED panel. Reviewers also found that the screen was not a major upgrade over earlier Ally hardware: OLED contrast and deeper blacks are absent, so dark games do not have the same punch as on an OLED handheld. At this price, the unchanged IPS display is one of the biggest reasons the value proposition feels weak.
How fast is it in real games?
The Ally X can run many modern games at 1080p, but settings and frame rates vary substantially by title. Pocket Tactics reported playable 1080p results in The Last of Us Part II, Grand Theft Auto V, Hogwarts Legacy and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Frame-generation features can push some results above 60 frames per second, but they can also reduce image quality and add latency.
Recommended Free Tools
The Independent’s hands-on testing illustrates the range more clearly:
- Forza Horizon 5 streamed at 1080p and 60fps over a 350Mbps connection.
- Destiny 2 reached 1080p at 120fps in testing.
- Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ran at about 30fps.
- Other demanding games showed title-specific stutter, texture pop-in or resolution compromises.
GLITCHED described the device as capable and solid, but measured only about a 15 percent performance gain over the previous model in its comparisons. That is enough to help in some games, yet not enough to make an existing Ally owner feel compelled to upgrade. New buyers get the stronger hardware, but they are paying a premium for a relatively modest generational step.

Battery life depends on the power preset
The Ally X has an 80Wh battery, a large capacity for this class of handheld. Actual endurance still depends on the game, brightness, frame-rate target and power profile. Pocket Tactics recorded the following estimates during use:
| Preset | Power target | Observed estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Turbo | 35W | Not stated in the cited testing |
| Turbo | 25W | Just over two hours during demanding play |
| Performance | 17W | Approximately three hours |
| Silent | 13W | About four hours |
The Independent likewise averaged a little over two hours with demanding games. Those figures are observations from 2025 reviews, not guarantees: a capped frame rate, less demanding game or lower brightness can extend runtime, while a heavy title at high refresh rate can reduce it. For modern AAA gaming, plan around a short session away from an outlet rather than an all-day portable console.
Does it feel like a real Xbox?
The Xbox app and Microsoft’s full-screen handheld layer make the Ally X more console-like than a conventional Windows desktop. Xbox games, the Microsoft Store and Steam are available, and you can also install Battle.net, the EA app, Epic Games Store, GOG Galaxy and Ubisoft Connect. That breadth is a major advantage if your library spans several storefronts.
It is still a Windows handheld, not a drop-in replacement for an Xbox Series X|S. Account prompts, launchers, updates and desktop-style settings can interrupt the experience, and the Xbox layer cannot eliminate every piece of Windows friction. The broad storefront access is useful precisely because the device remains a PC; the trade-off is that it does not deliver the simplicity of a dedicated console.
Price and alternatives
Pocket Tactics listed the Ally X at $999 in the United States and £799 in the United Kingdom in 2025. That price overlaps with entry-level gaming-laptop territory and sits above many competing handhelds. A Steam Deck OLED provides a lower-cost comparison with an OLED display, while earlier ROG Ally models may offer enough performance for less money. The evidence here does not establish current prices for those alternatives, so regional deals and configurations should be checked separately.

| Decision factor | ROG Xbox Ally X | Steam Deck OLED | Earlier Ally models |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comfort and controls | Strongest documented advantage; suited to extended play | Not established in the cited reviews | Older design; specific comparison not established |
| Display | 7-inch 1080p/120Hz IPS, about 500 nits | OLED panel; exact size and price not stated here | No major display improvement over prior Ally hardware |
| Native performance | Strong 1080p capability with game-specific compromises | Not established in the cited reviews | Ally X gains were about 15 percent in one GLITCHED comparison |
| Storefront access | Xbox, Microsoft Store, Steam and major PC launchers | Not established in the cited reviews | Windows-based access depends on model and installation |
| Purchase value | $999 US / £799 UK launch pricing | Lower-cost comparison; exact figure not stated | Potentially less expensive; exact figure not stated |
The practical choice is therefore not simply “which handheld is fastest?” Choose the Ally X when comfort, 1080p performance and one device for Xbox and multiple PC stores outweigh the price. Choose a lower-cost alternative when OLED image quality, a smaller budget or acceptable compromises matter more.

A USB-C dock or hub is the most useful expansion if you intend to play at a desk or connect several devices. The two USB-C ports provide flexibility, but a dock can consolidate display, charging, networking and USB accessories. No specific dock was tested in the cited material, so compatibility and power delivery should be checked before purchase.
The Independent noted that a protective case is not included. A case is therefore sensible for travel, especially because the Ally X is a premium device. Wired headphones can use the built-in 3.5mm jack; wireless audio and other peripherals remain options through the handheld’s supported connectivity.
Verdict after two weeks
The ROG Xbox Ally X is a comfortable, powerful piece of kit with unusually broad access to Xbox and PC storefronts. Its 1080p performance is credible, and the 80Wh battery gives you workable endurance when you lower the power target. Windows friction, the non-OLED display and only modest gains over earlier Ally hardware keep it from being an obvious recommendation at $999.
For someone who values portable access to a large Xbox and PC library above all else, the Ally X can earn its place. For everyone else, its comfort is compelling, but the price asks too much for a display and performance upgrade that are evolutionary rather than transformative.
