After six months, the Galaxy S26 Ultra looks like a very capable flagship whose most distinctive choices do not always translate into everyday value. Privacy Display can be genuinely useful in public, but may sit idle at home; the cameras impress one long-term owner yet draw a more critical comparison from another reviewer; and the camera island makes the phone wobble on a table. That is the fair case for Samsung being its own worst enemy—not proof that owners broadly dislike the phone.

Six months later: a strong phone with a case to make

Samsung announced the Galaxy S26 series on February 25, 2026. The Ultra combines a 6.9-inch Quad HD+ display with a 214 g body measuring 163.6 × 78.1 × 7.9 mm. Samsung lists Android 16 and One UI 8.5 in its 2026 interim report. Its US launch announcement identifies a customized Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform for Galaxy in the Ultra; the broader series platform listing also includes Exynos 2600, so the Ultra-specific US claim should not be generalized to every market.

The hardware and software offer plenty: Samsung describes a built-in pixel-level Privacy Display, a redesigned vapor chamber for heat dissipation under demanding workloads, and substantial processor gains. The friction is that headline capabilities are not automatically useful in ordinary routines. The six-month owner, Josh Teder, likes the phone overall, but his experience highlights a gap between what the Ultra can do and what he actually reaches for.

Privacy Display is most persuasive when other people are nearby

Samsung describes Privacy Display as a pixel-level feature intended to limit what people beside you can see. Teder reports that it can be toggled from the Quick Panel and set to activate for selected apps, sensitive notifications, passcode entry, and Secure Folder. After six months, he mainly turns it on in public places such as airports and mass transit.

That makes the feature an appealing practical benefit if you often handle private messages, accounts, or work on a crowded commute. If most of your screen time happens at home or in a car, it may be a feature you rarely use. That is an interpretation of Teder’s routine, not a measurement of how often S26 Ultra owners use it.

Samsung CEO, President, and Head of Device eXperience Division TM Roh said at launch, “We believe AI should be something people can depend on every day, it should be designed to work consistently for everyone, without the need for expertise.” That is Samsung’s statement of design intent; it does not establish how consistently a feature fits every owner’s habits.

The cameras: good results, different standards

Teder says his photos and videos have generally impressed him and that color accuracy feels improved over earlier Samsung phones he used. But he is less satisfied with night video, which he says visibly compensates for sensor noise. He is also uneasy about AI-enhanced moon photos because the result does not feel wholly like the image he captured. Those are one owner’s observations and preferences, not a controlled camera test.

He says he rarely uses the dedicated 10MP 3x camera, usually preferring the 50MP 5x optical camera. That matters if you regularly frame subjects at distances where a 3x view is useful; a specification only has value if it matches the shots you take. Teder’s September update says Samsung had not confirmed a rumor that a future S27 Ultra would drop the 3x lens, so that rumor should not be treated as a product decision.

Android Central’s Harish Jonnalagadda was more critical in a three-week review, judging several competing Android flagships better for photos and video and criticizing Samsung’s year-over-year camera approach as too similar. That is his comparative assessment, not a controlled lab comparison established here. Taken together, the reviews suggest that the S26 Ultra can produce pleasing images while still disappointing buyers who prioritize low-light video, a particular zoom range, or the strongest camera system among Android flagships.

Battery life depends on what a day looks like

Teder reports multiple stretches beyond two days in his own routine. On a heavy day with about four hours of screen time, he says the phone ended in the mid-50% range. On a normal day with two to two-and-a-half hours of screen time plus background audio, it ended in the mid-60% range. He also reports charging to 75% in 30 minutes. These are personal observations, not standardized battery or charging tests; Samsung advertises charging up to 75% in 30 minutes.

Android Central reports a 5,000mAh battery and says it usually lasted a day in Jonnalagadda’s use, though sufficiently heavy use could require a charge before night. These experiences need not conflict: screen time, gaming, camera use, background audio, and access to a charger change the result. Consider your own workload before translating either reviewer’s day into a prediction for yours.

Software breadth does not guarantee daily value

Teder appreciates conveniences including Quick Share with AirDrop and the Now Bar, but says most Galaxy AI features do little for his routine and that Gemini is the AI tool he finds most useful. Android Central likewise describes One UI as feature-rich and notes that owners do not have to use Galaxy AI. The useful question is not how many features Samsung includes, but which ones you would actually turn on or rely on.

Samsung’s product environmental report commits to seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from global launch. These are manufacturer commitments; regional rollout and service details can vary. Teder’s September 28, 2026 update says One UI 9 had begun rolling out to S26 series US carrier models. That describes an initial rollout, not universal availability, so check the version on your specific device and market rather than assuming every S26 Ultra has One UI 9.

The physical design creates a small but persistent annoyance

Teder says the phone wobbles noticeably on a flat surface and that he has not found himself wanting to use the S Pen. Android Central independently reports table wobble from the camera island and says a case is needed for stable table use. A case may solve the practical problem, but it adds bulk and changes how the phone fits in a hand or pocket.

The 214 g weight and 7.9 mm thickness are part of the trade-off: this is a large flagship with substantial camera hardware, not a compact device. The S Pen criticism should remain personal, too. Teder does not claim to know how many owners use it, so his lack of use is not evidence that the stylus is broadly unwanted.

Samsung’s headline numbers need their source attached

Samsung’s February 2026 launch announcement states a 19% CPU performance increase, 39% NPU performance improvement, and 24% GPU performance boost. These are Samsung’s stated comparisons, not independent benchmark results. Samsung also describes the redesigned vapor chamber as supporting heat dissipation under demanding workloads; that is a manufacturer description rather than an independently verified thermal result.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra 5G, US Version, 256GB, Phantom Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • 6.8" Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate, up to ~1750 nits brightness, HDR10+ support, and ultra-smooth responsiveness for gaming and scrolling.

The six-month evidence is useful for identifying trade-offs, not estimating satisfaction rates. It does not establish a representative owner-satisfaction figure, defect prevalence, S Pen usage rate, or battery degradation rate. One long-term account and one three-week comparative review cannot answer those population-level questions.

Should you buy the S26 Ultra now or wait?

The best way to judge the Ultra is against your actual routine, current phone, and local price—not the historical launch price alone. TechRadar reported a US launch price of $1,299.99 for the 256GB configuration in 2026; that is a launch-era figure, not a current quote or market offer.

  • Privacy: Frequent public-screen use makes Privacy Display more relevant than it is for a mostly private setting.
  • Cameras: Weigh general photo quality against low-light video, zoom preferences, and whether AI-enhanced results feel acceptable to you.
  • Battery: Compare your screen time, background audio, gaming, and camera use with the reviewers’ very different routines.
  • Ergonomics: Decide whether the large 214 g body and camera-island wobble are acceptable, especially if you prefer using a phone flat on a desk.
  • Software and support: Value the features you will use, and consider Samsung’s stated seven OS generations and seven years of security updates.
  • Upgrade value: Check current local pricing and trade-in terms against the phone you already own. A launch price does not establish today’s value.

If Privacy Display, the S Pen, camera flexibility, and long software support align with your habits, the S26 Ultra’s breadth may be worth the compromises. If you mainly want a dependable camera and battery, the reviewer split is a reason to compare alternatives and your own workload carefully. Waiting for a successor is a preference, not a conclusion supported by confirmed S27 Ultra details in these reviews.
