For a general-purpose desktop or small home server, a complete 8GB x86 mini PC may be the better value after Raspberry Pi’s 2026 price increases—but the answer depends on the full build cost and what you need to run. The likely match for the “$260 kit” is the GMK NucBox G3 Pro: TechRadar reported a $259 US listing for a configuration with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. That is a mini PC with storage, not a confirmed bundle with a keyboard, mouse, or monitor, and the reported price is not a live-price guarantee.
A Raspberry Pi still makes more sense when low power use, GPIO, or the Pi add-on ecosystem matters. Compare complete systems for your workload, not a Pi board price against a ready-to-use computer.
What changed in Raspberry Pi pricing?
Raspberry Pi announced memory-related increases in two stages in 2026. On February 2, the company said 8GB variants would rise by $30, attributing the change to higher memory costs. On April 1, it announced a further $50 increase for 8GB Raspberry Pi 4 and Pi 5 variants. The April announcement separately listed a $150 increase for the Raspberry Pi 500+ kit; that figure is for the keyboard-computer kit, not an additional board-price increase.

Raspberry Pi said LPDDR4 DRAM prices used in Pi 4 and Pi 5 had risen seven-fold over the preceding year. It also said the prices of 1GB and 2GB Pi 4 and Pi 5 variants remained between $35 and $65, and that the 4GB Pi 400 remained $60 at the time of the April announcement. Those are dated manufacturer statements, not promises about current shop prices.

The company’s stated position is to keep low-cost general-purpose computing a priority while encouraging buyers to match memory and compute to their actual needs. The practical implication is that the 8GB model is not automatically the right comparison for every buyer: first establish whether your workload needs that capacity.
Which $260 mini PC is the likely match?
The closest product identified in the available reporting is the GMK NucBox G3 Pro. TechRadar reported a $259 Amazon.com listing for a configuration with an Intel Core i3-10110U, 8GB DDR4, 256GB M.2 SATA storage, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Its review says memory and storage are upgradeable.

A Raspberry Pi board price is not the same thing as the cost of a working computer. Depending on your plan, a Pi build may also require storage, a power supply, a case, cooling, and input or display equipment. A mini PC’s listed price may already include some core components, but peripherals and other bundle contents vary by seller.

Jeff Geerling’s January 5, 2026 comparison illustrates the distinction: his fully configured Raspberry Pi 5 system with 16GB memory and 512GB storage was priced at $246.95, while a similarly specified GMKtec mini PC was $246.99. The Pi setup included storage, a case, a cooler, and a power adapter. This was a particular comparison, not a universal price rule, but it shows why comparing a bare board with a complete mini PC can give a misleading result.
- For the Pi: add the required storage, power adapter, case, and cooling, plus any peripherals you do not already own.
- For the mini PC: confirm which storage, wireless connectivity, power supply, and peripherals are included in the exact listing.
- For either system: count only equipment you actually need to buy. A monitor or keyboard already on your desk should not be treated as a new cost.
Choose by workload, power, and compatibility
General desktop use and home-lab services
An x86 mini PC is the more natural candidate if you want a conventional desktop environment or software that expects an x86 computer. Tom’s Hardware describes Intel mini PCs as more powerful in broad terms, while Raspberry Pi is the lower-power option. That is a general trade-off, not a measured guarantee that the NucBox will be faster for every application: no specific benchmark comparison establishes a speed ratio for this pair.

GPIO and hardware projects
For projects that rely on Raspberry Pi’s GPIO pins or its established add-on ecosystem, the Pi has a practical advantage that a typical compact x86 mini PC does not provide in the same way. If you need those board-level connections, include the cost and complexity of any adapters or additional hardware required to reproduce them on a mini PC. The right choice here is driven by the project, not by the memory-price change.

TechRadar reports that the NucBox G3 Pro configuration’s memory and storage are upgradeable. That offers a path to change those components later, though upgrade options and compatibility should be checked for the exact unit. A Raspberry Pi build is modular in a different sense: the board works with separate components and add-ons, which can be useful when a project needs a particular interface or replaceable part.
These are different forms of flexibility. Choose an x86 mini PC if you want a compact, integrated computer and the software compatibility it offers; choose the Pi if the board format, GPIO, or Pi-specific add-ons are part of the requirement. Neither description establishes that one is universally easier or cheaper to repair.
So, is the $260 8GB mini PC the smarter buy?
It is a plausible better buy for someone who wants a compact x86 computer for general-purpose computing and whose complete Pi build would cost about the same or more. The reported $259 NucBox G3 Pro configuration already includes 8GB memory and 256GB storage, while a Pi comparison must account for the parts needed to make it serve the same purpose.
Choose the Raspberry Pi instead when low power use, GPIO, or the Pi ecosystem is central to your use case—or when a lower-memory model is sufficient and keeps your complete build less expensive. Compare the current price of the exact mini PC listing with the itemized cost of the Pi build you would actually make; the historical announcements and reported listing prices do not establish today’s checkout totals.
