If your After Effects audio sounds slow, first check whether it is actually lower in pitch and longer in duration—or whether it only stutters, lags, or falls out of sync during preview. Preview settings and playback performance can affect what you hear in After Effects, so compare a short export before changing the source audio or buying hardware.
Is the audio slowed, or is preview playback struggling?
Listen for the difference between a genuine speed change and a preview problem. Audio that is both lower in pitch and longer than expected may have been altered in the project or output. Audio that pauses, crackles, drops out, or drifts out of sync while the composition plays may instead point to preview performance or audio-output settings.
Check whether the issue occurs in ordinary preview, audio-only preview, and a rendered file played outside After Effects. Those comparisons help narrow down where to troubleshoot; they do not identify a cause by themselves.

After Effects lets you configure preview behavior by shortcut, including frame rate, audio playback, preview range, and caching. A setting for one preview shortcut may not apply to another, so check the shortcut you actually use. Adobe’s preview documentation explains these controls and says Auto makes the preview and composition frame rates equal.

- Open the Preview panel and identify the active preview shortcut.
- Check its Frame Rate setting and confirm that Play audio in preview is enabled if you expect to hear audio.
- Try Auto for the frame rate, then preview the same section again.
These controls determine preview behavior; changing them is not evidence that the source file’s pitch or duration has changed.
Verify the project sample rate and audio output
Check the project’s audio sample rate at File > Project Settings. Then inspect the audio device and output mapping used for preview. Adobe documents these as separate checks: preview behavior depends on Audio Hardware and Audio Output Mapping, while output-module settings determine the audio quality of the final render. - Open File > Project Settings and review the Audio sample rate against the project and delivery requirements.
- Open Audio Hardware preferences and check the device class, selected or default output, and hardware sample-rate settings.
- Review Audio Output Mapping to confirm that the intended output is assigned.
- Preview the same section again and compare it with a short rendered file.
There is no single sample rate that can be recommended for every project without knowing its source media and delivery requirements.
Reduce preview load if audio stutters or loses sync
After Effects uses available RAM for real-time preview and can use disk caching for longer previews. Adobe also notes that preview audio can stutter to maintain sync when preview frame rate falls below real time. That makes performance checks relevant when playback stutters or drifts; it does not establish a general mechanism that changes source-audio pitch or duration. See Adobe’s preferences documentation.

- Lower the composition preview resolution and test the same section.
- Allow the preview to cache before judging playback.
- Review memory and media-cache settings using Adobe’s memory and storage guidance.
- Try Adobe’s performance suggestions, such as lowering composition resolution, in its Improve performance documentation.
These steps test whether playback responsiveness is involved; they do not prove that the source audio has been slowed.
Use a short export to separate preview from output
Render a short section that contains the problem, then play the file outside After Effects. If it sounds normal, focus on preview configuration, performance, or the selected audio output. Adobe distinguishes preview hardware preferences from output-module settings for final audio quality.

If the exported file also has altered pitch or duration, investigate the project’s source interpretation, time stretching, effects, and export settings in the context of your After Effects version and project. The available Adobe guidance on preview settings does not establish which of these would be responsible in a particular project.
