HUMANKIND 2 could become a credible alternative to Civilization VII, but it is still an announced 2027 game rather than a playable replacement. Amplitude Studios is building its sequel around three unusually clear ideas: culture changes should follow history and contact, geography should shape adaptation, and climate should permanently alter strategic decisions. Those systems answer real questions about continuity and world change, even though balance, performance and launch quality remain unknown.
What HUMANKIND 2 is—and when it arrives
HUMANKIND 2 is Amplitude Studios’ second historical, turn-based 4X strategy game. It is planned for 2027 and is not yet available. The announced campaign runs from ancient history to the Modern Age, combining city building, armies, diplomacy, trade and the growth of an empire.
Amplitude has not announced a final launch date. Steam lists a Windows version and system requirements, but both the requirements and the game’s feature set can change before release. The game is therefore best understood as a design preview, not a finished product buyers can evaluate today.

The culture system is designed to make historical change feel earned
The first detailed gameplay overview says Historical Mode contains roughly 20 starting locations and 70 cultures. Every culture has a progression tree of Customs. These unlock bonuses, units or districts and culminate in a Legacy Trait, giving a culture a lasting identity instead of making each selection a one-off statistical swap.

Three rules govern a culture change
In Historical Mode, your next culture is limited to one that connects to your existing story through at least one of three routes:
- Common History: a direct historical relationship between the cultures.
- Shared Land: a geographic connection that makes the transition plausible.
- Foreign Contact: close interaction with another culture that opens a new path.
You can also adopt selected Customs from neighboring cultures. That creates a middle ground between keeping one identity unchanged and abandoning it wholesale: your people can borrow a military, economic or civic practice without pretending that an unrelated civilization appeared overnight.

Why this matters for the “next Civilization” question
Civilization VII uses Age-based civilization changes, according to its publisher. HUMANKIND 2’s announced approach is more conditional: geography, contact and prior history determine which cultural choices are available. That does not prove one system is better, but it gives HUMANKIND 2 a specific answer to a common 4X problem—how to let an empire evolve without making its eras feel disconnected.

Climate and biomes turn the map into a moving strategic problem
HUMANKIND 2’s climate model is not presented as a decorative weather layer. Steam’s description says a changing climate reshapes the world and your path through history. Amplitude’s gameplay overview adds that climate changes can alter biomes, resources, cities and economies.
Eight biome-specific Adaptations are intended to help societies survive harsh environments. In practical terms, a settlement’s location may remain valuable or become a liability as conditions change; an economy built around a particular resource can face pressure when the surrounding biome shifts; and city planning must account for environmental change rather than treating the opening map as permanent.

HUMANKIND 2 and Civilization VII: what is actually comparable

What “Civ 7 stumbled” means here
The headline’s phrase is editorial framing, not an established industry finding. The available announcements do not prove that Civilization VII objectively stumbled, and they provide no comparative review or commercial data. Civilization VII is nevertheless the current commercial reference point: 2K and Firaxis released it worldwide on February 11, 2025 and list versions for nine console and computer platforms. The publisher also says the franchise has sold in more than 73 million copies.
Against that backdrop, HUMANKIND 2’s appeal is not that it has already defeated Civilization VII. Its appeal is that Amplitude is tackling specific continuity and environmental questions with explicit rules rather than relying on a vague promise of historical flavor.
Can HUMANKIND 2 replace Civilization VII?
Not yet. A replacement decision requires information that does not exist before launch: how well the Customs trees are balanced, whether culture restrictions create interesting choices or frustrating dead ends, how readable climate changes are, and whether diplomacy, warfare and city development hold up through a full campaign.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPlayers who want a game now have Civilization VII’s broad platform availability. Players willing to wait should watch HUMANKIND 2’s next demonstrations for four practical answers:
- How often do Common History, Shared Land and Foreign Contact create different viable culture routes?
- Can a player recover when climate change damages a favored resource or city location?
- Do neighbor Customs produce meaningful hybrid societies rather than small interchangeable bonuses?
- Does the Modern Age remain strategically connected to the choices made in antiquity?
Who should be paying attention
- Historical-strategy players: the constrained culture paths may offer a stronger sense of continuity than unrestricted era hopping.
- Systems-focused 4X players: climate-driven changes to biomes, resources and economies could make adaptation central to empire planning.
- Players deciding whether to wait: HUMANKIND 2 is a 2027 prospect, so its announced ideas should not be treated as a near-term purchase recommendation.
The sensible verdict is provisional: HUMANKIND 2 has a coherent answer to two longstanding 4X design challenges—why cultures change and how a world changes around them. Whether that answer can carry an entire campaign will only be clear after Amplitude reveals more and the finished game is available to play.
