Yes—ONLYOFFICE can replace the everyday Word, Excel and PowerPoint part of Microsoft 365 for many Windows users. In a 30-day personal switch, XDA Developers writer Yash Patel found that routine documents, spreadsheets and presentations transferred smoothly enough. The only consistent regret was that Microsoft Word felt more polished for writing, particularly in long or heavily formatted documents.
That is useful evidence, not a universal compatibility guarantee. Patel’s experience was a single-person workflow experiment, not a benchmark, enterprise migration or exhaustive test of Microsoft 365 services.
What the 30-day experiment actually showed
Patel replaced Microsoft 365 with ONLYOFFICE on a Windows PC and used it for normal work for a month. He reported that everyday spreadsheet and presentation tasks moved over without a disruptive learning curve. His own summary was: “OnlyOffice does the job, and I’m getting used to the small differences.”
The remaining preference was not one clearly identified missing command. It was the accumulated convenience of Word: the familiar editing behavior, small writing aids and smoother handling of lengthy or formatting-sensitive documents. Patel described the result simply: “Word still felt more polished.” Both statements are his observations, reported in the original account, rather than results from controlled product testing.

What ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors includes
ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors is an open-source office suite distributed under the AGPL v3 license. Its official help documentation says the desktop application can edit local files without a constant internet connection and supports office documents, spreadsheets, presentations, PDFs and fillable forms.

The official desktop guide also describes local editing and the AGPL v3 licensing. The download page lists Windows, macOS and Linux builds. When it was crawled, it showed Windows version 9.4.0 builds released May 19, 2026; desktop version numbers and release dates can change, so check that page before installing.

The one thing Patel missed: Word’s writing polish
Everyday writing was adequate
For short documents and routine edits, Patel found ONLYOFFICE usable. The issue emerged as the document became longer or more sensitive to formatting. In those situations, Word’s familiar behavior reduced friction even when both programs could perform the basic operation.
“Polish” is broader than a missing button
Nothing in the account identifies a single ONLYOFFICE command that made the switch fail. The difference was cumulative: how quickly editing feels natural, how predictable formatting remains as a document grows, and how many small conveniences are already part of a writer’s habits. Your own reaction may therefore depend more on document length, templates and editing routine than on a feature checklist.

Will DOCX, XLSX and PPTX files keep their formatting?
Both suites use the common file types named above, but an extension match is not proof that every feature will round-trip perfectly. The safest answer is to test your own files, especially those that contain tracked changes, complex page layouts, unusual fonts, external links, macros, elaborate formulas, charts, animations or embedded objects. No compatibility percentage or independent file-fidelity benchmark was established for Patel’s month-long trial.
A practical round-trip test
- Collect representative originals: a long DOCX with tracked changes, a formula-heavy XLSX, a typical PPTX deck and any shared or template-driven files.
- Make duplicate copies so the originals remain untouched.
- Open each copy in ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors and inspect pagination, styles, comments, change tracking, formulas, charts, print settings, animations and embedded items.
- Edit the files, save them in their existing formats, close the application and reopen them. Look for shifted breaks, changed fonts, altered formulas or missing objects.
- Open those saved copies in the Microsoft software used by your colleagues or customers. Check the same features again, including tracked-change acceptance and presentation playback.
- Have a second person review the result if the file is shared externally. A document that looks correct to its author can still expose collaboration or printing problems.
If a file fails this test, keep that workload in the software that preserves it reliably rather than assuming every document will behave the same way.

Where ONLYOFFICE does and does not replace Microsoft 365

Offline editing is real, but cloud services are a separate decision
For a person who mainly opens files stored on a local drive, ONLYOFFICE’s offline capability is a meaningful advantage: the desktop editor does not require a constant internet connection for local documents. That does not automatically replace OneDrive storage, Outlook mail and calendars, Teams communication, organizational identity, compliance controls or tenant administration.

The cited 30-day switch did not comprehensively test those services. A household user with occasional file sharing and an organization with hundreds of managed accounts should not treat them as the same migration.

Who is most likely to be satisfied?
- Good fit: people who work mostly with local DOCX, XLSX and PPTX files, need occasional PDF or form editing, value offline access and can validate their important documents.
- Proceed carefully: writers producing long, style-heavy documents; teams that exchange tracked changes; spreadsheet users dependent on complex formulas or external links; and anyone whose presentations contain specialized animations or embedded media.
- Not a desktop-only replacement: organizations seeking an immediate substitute for the entire Microsoft 365 service stack, including cloud storage, mail, meetings, collaboration and centralized administration.
A sensible way to make the switch
Install the current desktop build from the official download page, then use it alongside your existing software rather than converting every file at once. Start with copies of the documents you use most often. Complete the round-trip checks above, ask collaborators to open the saved files, and record which features cause rework. If your results are clean and your work is mostly local, ONLYOFFICE may cover your daily office editing. If the friction appears mainly in long-form writing, you can keep Word for that narrow workload while using ONLYOFFICE for the rest.
Verdict
Patel’s month provides a credible, limited answer to “Can ONLYOFFICE replace Microsoft 365?” For ordinary documents, spreadsheets and presentations, it can be good enough—especially when offline local editing and open-source licensing matter. The trade-off is not a documented universal incompatibility; it is the loss of Word’s smoother writing experience, most noticeable in long or formatting-sensitive documents. Your own files and collaboration requirements should decide whether that trade-off is acceptable.
