A 2026 study finds that African American adults ages 18–39 most often place household help with family, while many prefer families and government to share financial and personal-care support. The results vary substantially by age group and by the type of assistance older adults need.
What the study examined
The study by Nekehia T. Quashie, Sarah E. Patterson, Michelle A. Stage and Neil K. Mehta was published online August 24, 2026, in Sociological Focus (volume 59, issue 4, pages 687–701; DOI 10.1080/00380237.2026.2626864). It asks how African American adults at different life stages think families and government should support older adults.
The researchers analyzed 1,696 African American respondents ages 18 to 90 from the 2001–2003 National Survey of American Life Adult Reinterview. They divided respondents into young adults ages 18–39, midlife adults ages 40–64 and older adults ages 65 and above.

For three kinds of assistance—financial support, household chores and personal care—respondents chose whether responsibility should fall mainly on family, be shared equally by family and government, or fall mainly on government.

What African American young adults preferred
Young adults did not choose one responsibility model for every type of elder support. Their strongest family preference applied to household chores, while shared responsibility was more common for money and hands-on care.

These are descriptive percentages: each figure shows the proportion selecting the named responsibility model for that domain. They do not mean that every young adult expects relatives to provide all care, nor that the same respondent necessarily chose the same model in all three areas.

How midlife and older adults differed
The researchers also used regression analysis to compare age groups, with young adults as the reference group. The analysis reports the direction of differences rather than a single percentage for each comparison.

In other words, older respondents were relatively more supportive of public provision for practical daily help and personal care, while midlife respondents showed a stronger government preference specifically for financial support. The findings do not rank one generation as more caring; they show that expectations change with both life stage and task.

Why the type of help matters
Household chores
Chores such as cleaning, shopping or meal preparation are often imagined as activities relatives can organize directly. The 67.3% family-responsibility figure indicates that this is where young adults most clearly favored a family-centered model.
Financial support
Money may involve expenses that exceed what one household can absorb. A majority of young adults, 56.9%, selected an equal family-and-government role, showing support for family participation alongside public assistance rather than a purely private arrangement.

Personal care
Personal care can require sustained time, training and availability. Young adults most commonly selected shared responsibility here as well, but the figure was 45.2%, lower than the corresponding share for financial support. That difference is another reason not to treat “family support” as a single, uniform position.

The authors suggest that life-course stage may shape attitudes through differences in income and other resources, exposure to caregiving and awareness of how much government assistance is available or needed. Their analysis points to the value of designing support around the task and the intended age group instead of assuming that all African American families want the same arrangement.

Older adults’ comparatively stronger endorsement of government responsibility for chores and personal care may be especially relevant to programs that help with daily activities at home. As Nekehia Quashie explained, “Understanding age differences in African Americans’ views of whether the family and/or government should be responsible for different types of support to older adults provides valuable information on how support services may be targeted for different age groups.”
Important limits on the interpretation
- Historical data: The survey was conducted in 2001–2003. The article is a national historical snapshot, not a real-time 2026 poll.
- Attitudes, not observed behavior: Choosing a responsibility model does not show who actually provides care, pays bills or completes chores.
- Association, not causation: The observational design identifies differences associated with life-course stage. It cannot establish that reaching a particular age causes a person’s views.
- Within-group comparison: The study compares young, midlife and older African American respondents. It does not compare African Americans with other racial or ethnic groups.
- Community variation: A national sample cannot capture every family’s circumstances, local service system or cultural expectation.
The most accurate answer to whether African American young adults think family should care for older adults is therefore qualified: they often favor family involvement, especially for household chores, but many also want government to share responsibility for financial and personal-care support. The balance depends on the task and differs from the preferences reported by midlife and older adults.
