Short answer: Aerospace and automotive factories both depend on controlled processes, documented quality, and measured conformity, but their approval frameworks serve different purposes. For U.S. civil aircraft, an FAA production approval authorizes manufacture of duplicate products under an FAA-approved type design and evaluates the manufacturer’s quality system, organization, and facilities. Automotive suppliers generally work to IATF 16949:2016 together with each customer’s specific requirements. Neither framework makes every part in one sector universally more precise than every part in the other; tolerances are set feature by feature on the drawing and verified with an appropriate measurement system.

The essential difference at a glance

“Certification” does not mean the same thing in these industries. In U.S. civil aviation, production approval is a regulatory authorization linked to an approved aircraft design. In automotive supply, IATF 16949:2016 is a quality-management-system (QMS) standard for organizations making production, service, and accessory parts, and it operates alongside customer-specific requirements.

Comparison point Aerospace manufacturing (U.S. civil aircraft) Automotive manufacturing
Primary framework described here FAA production approval under 14 CFR Part 21, Subpart G, tied to an FAA-approved type design IATF 16949:2016 QMS requirements, used with applicable customer-specific requirements
What approval or certification establishes Authorization to manufacture duplicate products in conformity with an approved design; the FAA evaluates the quality system, organization, and facilities That the organization’s automotive QMS meets the standard’s requirements; vehicle makers and other customers can add their own requirements
Central conformity question Can the facility repeatedly produce the approved aircraft product in conformity with approved design data? Does the supplier control automotive processes and products according to IATF and the applicable customer requirements?
Tolerance answer Set by the particular aircraft part, feature, function, drawing, process, and acceptance method Set by the particular vehicle part, feature, function, drawing, process, and acceptance method
Sector-wide tolerance or volume statistic Not established by the cited material Not established by the cited material

That distinction prevents two common errors: treating a QMS certificate as if it were an aircraft product approval, and claiming that aerospace tolerances are always tighter by a fixed factor. A defensible comparison names the parts or features, the drawing limits, the process, the inspection method, the measurement uncertainty, and the acceptance criteria.

What aerospace production approval means

Approval is tied to an approved aircraft design

The Federal Aviation Administration defines a production certificate as follows: “A production certificate is an approval (document) to manufacture duplicate products under an FAA-approved type design (e.g., type certificate or supplemental type certificate).” The FAA’s Production Certificates page was last updated April 3, 2025. The phrase “under an FAA-approved type design” is the key boundary: the authorization concerns a defined aircraft product and the data that define it, rather than being a general badge for any manufacturing activity.

The FAA production-approval system applies to U.S. civil aviation. Other national aviation authorities can use different approval names, legal provisions, or oversight arrangements, so the pathway described here should not be generalized to every country without checking that authority’s rules.

What the FAA evaluates

For a production certificate, the applicant’s quality system, organization, and facilities are evaluated against 14 CFR Part 21, Subpart G. The FAA process overview describes manufacturing approval as an assessment of the applicant’s ability to produce products consistently in conformity with the approved design. The review therefore reaches beyond a single dimensional inspection: it examines whether the organization and its production controls can sustain conformity over time.

The FAA process includes an audit of the applicant’s quality system, organization, production facility, and approved quality-system and design data. In practical terms, an aerospace manufacturer must be able to show that the product being built is the product that was approved, and that the controls used to build and inspect it are part of an accepted system.

Other FAA production approvals

The FAA production-approval family also includes:

  • Parts Manufacturer Approval (PMA): used for specified modification and replacement articles.
  • Technical Standard Order Authorization (TSOA): available for eligible articles that meet an FAA minimum performance standard.

These approvals are not interchangeable labels. The applicable approval depends on the article, the design authority, and the regulatory route being used. A supplier or buyer should identify the exact approval basis rather than relying on the word “aerospace certified” alone.

What IATF 16949 means in automotive supply

An organization-level automotive QMS

IATF 16949:2016 sets QMS requirements for organizations producing automotive production, service, and accessory parts. It is used together with applicable customer-specific requirements, not as a replacement for them. The standard is intended to harmonize quality expectations across the automotive supply chain, while each vehicle maker or other customer can impose additional controls, forms, records, or performance targets.

IATF states that it cooperates with ISO and has begun a revision process for IATF 16949:2016. Editions, sanctioned interpretations, transition arrangements, and customer rules can change. Before relying on a certificate or planning an audit, confirm the edition and transition requirements that apply at that time and in the relevant market.

What the automotive framework controls

IATF-related materials identify process and product audits, measurement-system analysis, calibration or verification records, manufacturing-process monitoring, and product approval among the controls used in automotive quality management. These mechanisms are designed to make variation visible, keep measuring equipment suitable for its use, and demonstrate that a production process and its output meet specified requirements.

A certificate to an automotive QMS standard does not, by itself, approve a particular aircraft design, authorize an aircraft article, or replace a vehicle maker’s customer-specific requirements. Conversely, an FAA production approval is not an automotive QMS certificate. The two credentials answer different questions.

Why “aerospace is always tighter” is not a valid rule

Tolerance belongs to a feature, not an industry label

A tolerance is the permitted variation for a particular characteristic: for example, a dimension, location, surface condition, material property, or performance value. Its width depends on the feature’s function, the engineering drawing, the manufacturing process, the inspection method, and the acceptance decision. An industry-wide statement such as “aerospace is ten times more precise” has no defined meaning unless those variables are specified.

The FAA and IATF material establishes approval and quality-system mechanisms, but it does not establish one universal aerospace tolerance band and one universal automotive tolerance band. A large structural feature in an aircraft and a small sealing feature in a vehicle can have very different requirements within their own sectors. The meaningful question is whether each supplier can produce the specified feature and prove conformity with a suitable measurement system.

What a credible tolerance comparison contains

When comparing two parts, record the following in the same table or report:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The exact feature and its functional purpose.
  • The nominal value and upper and lower drawing limits, including any geometric-tolerancing callouts.
  • The manufacturing process and the condition in which the part is accepted.
  • The inspection instrument, fixture, software, and measurement procedure.
  • Calibration or verification status and the estimated measurement uncertainty.
  • The sampling plan or inspection frequency used for the decision.
  • The acceptance, rework, concession, or rejection rule.

Without these details, “precision” can mean anything from a nominal drawing value to the resolution printed on an instrument. It cannot support a fair sector comparison.

How measurement and process control differ in practice

Automotive measurement-system analysis and monitoring

IATF-related requirements specifically call attention to measurement-system analysis, calibration or verification records, manufacturing-process monitoring, and product approval. Measurement-system analysis asks whether the gauge and method can distinguish conforming from nonconforming product with adequate repeatability and reproducibility for the characteristic being checked.

ISO’s explanation of statistical process control describes using data and statistical techniques to monitor production performance and detect variation that could lead to defects. In an automotive line, this may support ongoing process monitoring and timely corrective action. The existence of such tools does not prove that every automotive feature has a looser or tighter tolerance than an aerospace feature; it shows how variation is managed against the requirement that actually applies.

Aerospace conformity to approved design

FAA production approval focuses on the ability to manufacture consistently in conformity with approved design data. The quality-system audit, facility review, and examination of approved design and quality-system data are aimed at maintaining that conformity through production. Inspection evidence is therefore interpreted in the context of the approved aircraft design and the production system accepted by the regulator.

Both sectors can use calibrated instruments, process capability studies, statistical techniques, first-article or product-approval evidence, and layered audits. The difference is the approval relationship and the customer or regulator that sets the governing requirements, not the mere presence or absence of a particular tool.

Production controls: a side-by-side view

Control axis Aerospace emphasis in the FAA framework Automotive emphasis in IATF-related practice
Design authority Production is linked to an FAA-approved type design, such as a type certificate or supplemental type certificate. Production follows the customer’s product and process requirements, with the automotive QMS providing common supply-chain requirements.
Approval scope Regulatory production approval for a defined aircraft product or eligible article. Organization-level QMS certification for automotive production, service, and accessory parts, supplemented by customer-specific requirements.
Conformity evidence Evidence that the facility and its quality system can repeatedly produce in conformity with approved design data. Process and product audits, product approval records, process monitoring, and measurement controls showing conformity to IATF and customer requirements.
Oversight FAA evaluation and continuing regulatory oversight associated with the applicable production approval. Certification and customer oversight under the applicable IATF scheme and each customer’s additional requirements.
Change control question Will a change preserve conformity with approved design and the accepted production system? Will a change remain compliant with IATF, customer-specific requirements, product approval, and process-control obligations?
Measurement focus Verify characteristics required by the approved design with suitable inspection evidence. Maintain capable measurement systems, calibration or verification records, and monitored processes for specified characteristics.

This table describes the frameworks’ emphasis; it does not rank one sector as inherently stricter. A customer contract, a safety-critical feature, or a particular process can make the controls for one individual automotive part more demanding than those for an individual aerospace part, or vice versa.

Production volume, cadence, and why broad numbers mislead

Aircraft and vehicles are built under different program conditions, but the cited material does not establish a directly comparable aerospace-versus-automotive annual production figure, defect rate, or tolerance capability. Do not turn an anecdotal production count into a sector-wide statistic.

For a useful scale comparison, name the programs and the period being compared, then report the units, production cadence, factory scope, and whether prototypes, service parts, or serial production are included. Also state whether the comparison concerns a complete vehicle or aircraft, a major assembly, or a single supplier’s part. Without those definitions, “high volume” and “low volume” are labels rather than measurements.

A practical method for comparing two suppliers or parts

Step 1: Define the object of comparison

Write down the exact part numbers, revisions, materials, processes, and features. Do not compare an entire “aerospace industry” with an entire “automotive industry” when the purchasing decision concerns one bracket, housing, fastener, casting, or electronic article.

Step 2: Identify the governing approval basis

For an aircraft article, ask whether the work is covered by a production certificate, PMA, TSOA, or another applicable approval, and identify the approved design data. For an automotive article, identify the supplier’s IATF certification status and the customer-specific requirements, product-approval submission, and process-audit obligations that apply.

Step 3: Map the required characteristics

Extract the drawing limits and functional requirements into a comparison sheet. Separate dimensional, geometric, material, performance, and cosmetic characteristics. Record the acceptance condition and any special-process or supplier controls stated by the customer or design authority.

Step 4: Check the measurement system

Match each characteristic to an instrument and method whose calibration, verification, repeatability, reproducibility, and uncertainty are appropriate for the decision. A device’s displayed resolution is not the same as demonstrated measurement capability.

Step 5: Review process evidence

Ask for the records that fit the framework: approved-design conformity and quality-system evidence in the FAA context; process and product audits, measurement-system analysis, calibration or verification records, process monitoring, and product approval evidence in the automotive context. Confirm record retention and change-control responsibilities in the contract.

Step 6: Compare risk and response

Evaluate what happens when a result is out of specification: containment, root-cause analysis, rework, concession, customer notification, and approval of a process or design change. The governing authority and customer should be identified for each decision; do not assume that a disposition rule from one sector transfers to the other.

Inspection equipment: what a basic caliper can and cannot tell you

A digital caliper can be useful for introductory or shop-floor measurements where the feature and required uncertainty are compatible with that instrument. The cited quality guidance does not establish that a consumer caliper is suitable for accepting production parts, aerospace components, or any particular tolerance.

Industrial inspection requires equipment, fixtures, environmental controls, calibration, and measurement-system evidence appropriate to the part and its required uncertainty. For a tight or safety-significant characteristic, a supplier may need a more capable gauge or coordinate-measuring method, but the correct choice must come from the drawing, process, and measurement study rather than from the sector name.

Common comparison mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: treating certificates as interchangeable

Correction: State whether the document is a regulatory product/design-linked production approval or an organization-level automotive QMS certificate. Then identify the customer-specific or design-specific obligations that sit alongside it.

Mistake: publishing a universal tolerance multiplier

Correction: Compare named features and publish the drawing limits, method, uncertainty, and acceptance criteria. If those data are unavailable, say that a cross-sector numeric comparison has not been established.

Mistake: confusing instrument resolution with accuracy

Correction: Review calibration or verification records and measurement-system analysis. A screen that displays additional decimal places does not prove that the result is accurate enough for acceptance.

Mistake: assuming one customer’s automotive rules apply everywhere

Correction: Read the applicable customer-specific requirements in addition to IATF 16949. Requirements can differ by vehicle maker, component, geography, and program.

Mistake: generalizing U.S. FAA pathways globally

Correction: Identify the responsible aviation authority and the legal approval route for the country and aircraft category involved. The FAA framework described here is specifically for U.S. civil aviation.

Mistake: using production volume as a proxy for quality

Correction: Compare defined programs, periods, parts, and metrics. Neither high volume nor low volume, by itself, establishes tighter tolerances or better conformity.

What the comparison means for buyers, engineers, and quality teams

Buyers should request the exact approval or certification scope, applicable revisions, customer-specific requirements, and evidence that the supplier’s measurement systems can support the drawing. Engineers should write functional requirements and acceptance methods clearly enough that suppliers can choose an appropriate process and verify the result. Quality teams should audit the controls that matter to the part: design-data status, process validation or monitoring, calibration, measurement-system capability, traceability, change control, and disposition of nonconforming product.

For organizations deciding between an aerospace-oriented QMS path and an automotive one, the choice follows the market and approval obligations. The FAA identifies AS9100 among quality-system standards recognized in an FAA distributor-accreditation context, while IATF and AIAG describe the automotive standard and its supply-chain use. Neither mention turns AS9100 or IATF 16949 into a substitute for the product approval, customer approval, or regulatory authorization required for a specific program.

Bottom line

Aerospace and automotive manufacturing share disciplined process control, inspection, calibration, and documented quality, but their certificates answer different questions. FAA production approval is a U.S. civil-aircraft authorization to manufacture duplicate products under approved design data, with evaluation of the manufacturer’s quality system, organization, and facilities. IATF 16949:2016 is an automotive QMS framework used with customer-specific requirements. Tolerances are not properties of an entire sector: compare the actual feature, drawing, process, measurement system, uncertainty, and acceptance rule before claiming one industry is more precise.
