Short answer: Aerogel usually delivers more thermal resistance in a thinner layer, while “foam insulation” is a broad group whose performance varies by chemistry and product. Aerogel is attractive when space is severely limited or a specialized application justifies its cost. For sound, there is no universal winner: absorption, airborne transmission loss and vibration isolation are different outcomes, and the wall, roof, pipe or floor assembly often matters more than the insulation name.
What you are actually comparing
Aerogel and foam are not single, directly interchangeable materials. Aerogel is a highly porous solid, commonly made with silica and supplied as a blanket, board, monolith or composite. Its nanoscale pores restrict gas movement, which can produce very low thermal conductivity. Building and industrial projects commonly use flexible aerogel blankets where a thin, conformable layer is valuable.
Foam insulation describes several unrelated chemistries. Expanded polystyrene (EPS), extruded polystyrene (XPS), polyurethane and polyisocyanurate have different cell structures, densities, facings, moisture behavior, fire characteristics and mechanical properties. The U.S. Department of Energy treats these as distinct material families rather than one generic foam category (DOE’s discussion of isocyanurate-based insulation).
That distinction matters because a conductivity or acoustic result from one foam cannot be transferred to every foam board or spray product. A meaningful comparison names the exact product, thickness, density, temperature, moisture condition and installation assembly.

Thermal performance: aerogel usually wins when thickness is limited
Thermal conductivity (k-value) is the material-level measure to compare: lower conductivity generally means less heat flow through the same thickness. Installed R-value also depends on thickness, joints, fasteners, framing, facings, moisture and workmanship. A thin material with an excellent laboratory k-value can underperform if it is discontinuous or poorly fitted.
A DOE project description characterizes aerogels as providing an R-value of 10 or higher per inch. That is a broad project-page description, not a guaranteed rating for every blanket, board or composite (DOE, “Innovative Aerogel Production for Low-Cost and High-R Insulation”).
Aerogel Technologies publishes indicative ranges that illustrate the gap between material families: 10–20 mW/m·K for a typical silica aerogel monolith at about 100 mg/cc, 14–21 mW/m·K for its Spaceloft composite blankets, and 29–35 mW/m·K for typical polyurethane foam or expanded polystyrene examples. The company notes that conductivity changes with composition, form, density and environment, so these figures are not substitutes for a grade-specific datasheet (Aerogel Technologies FAQ).
| Material example | Published thermal figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Silica aerogel monolith, about 100 mg/cc | 10–20 mW/m·K | Indicative company range; density and test conditions apply. |
| Spaceloft composite aerogel blanket | 14–21 mW/m·K | Indicative company range for a named blanket family, not every aerogel blanket. |
| Typical polyurethane foam or EPS examples | 29–35 mW/m·K | Indicative company range; polyurethane and EPS are different products. |
| Aerogels in a DOE building-project description | R-value of 10 or higher per inch | Broad characterization, not a universal product guarantee. |
Why the advantage appears in a real retrofit
If a wall can accept only a small increase in depth, lower conductivity lets an aerogel blanket add resistance without widening jambs, roof edges or service cavities as much as a conventional layer. This is especially relevant around window reveals, historic façades, curved equipment and pipework where a thick board is impractical.
However, the apparent advantage can shrink at assembly level. Compression, gaps between blanket pieces, fasteners, framing members and thermal bridges all create parallel heat paths. A continuous but slightly less conductive foam layer may outperform a higher-performing material installed with many seams. Check the product’s declared R-value at the intended thickness and temperature, then model or detail the complete assembly.

Evidence from specialized assemblies
An Oak Ridge National Laboratory verification table published by DOE compares particular bare and aerogel-impregnated polyurethane piping and duct specimens. Those measured conductivities are useful for that piping/duct project, but they are not a general test of residential wall foam versus an aerogel blanket (DOE peer-review page).
DOE’s cold-climate enclosure report models retrofit options that include injected polyurethane foam and aerogel. The report says literature for shredded aerogel was limited and required approximate extrapolation; treat those results as scenario evidence, not a product certification (Building America, “Cold Climate Building Enclosure Solutions”).

A steam line has different temperatures, geometry, supports and exposure than a framed wall, so the application should not be used to predict a house’s whole-wall R-value (DOE, “Aerogel-Based Insulation for Industrial Steam Distribution Systems”).
Acoustic performance: define the sound problem first
“Sound insulation” can mean at least three different things:
- Absorption: reducing reflections inside a room. This is usually reported with absorption coefficients by frequency.
- Airborne transmission loss: reducing sound passing through a panel or partition. Wall ratings such as STC are assembly measures, not simply material properties.
- Vibration isolation: limiting structure-borne energy through floors, equipment mounts or panels. Dynamic stiffness and resonance frequency are important.
A material that absorbs mid-frequency reverberation may do little to stop bass through a wall. A dense barrier can block airborne sound but transmit vibration through rigid fasteners. Aerogel studies cited below measure different outcomes and cannot be collapsed into one “best for acoustics” ranking.

What the aerogel acoustic studies found
A 2023 review reports that a monolithic polyurea aerogel at 0.45 g/cm³ reached up to 40 dB/cm sound transmission loss in the studied range up to 5 kHz. A similar-density polyurethane acoustic foam reached up to 5 dB in that comparison (Advanced Engineering Materials review, 2023). These are specimen-level, frequency-dependent results. They do not mean an aerogel blanket will block eight times more sound in a finished wall: thickness, backing, edge leakage, mounting and the rest of the partition determine installed transmission loss.

A 2024 study of silica-aerogel composites reported 10 dB sound transmission loss above 2,000 Hz and thermal conductivity of 0.038 W m−1 K−1 for the tested composite (RSC Advances, 2024). The frequency threshold and composite formulation are part of the result; lower-frequency performance and other products may differ substantially.
A separate 2024 peer-reviewed study examined vibration isolation in commercial and research-stage aerogel blankets and boards, fumed-silica boards, polymer aerogels and nanofoams. It reports low resonance frequencies and distinctive dynamic-stiffness behavior for some materials, while identifying compressibility, cost, availability and market acceptance as barriers (Construction and Building Materials, 2024). Vibration isolation is not equivalent to room absorption or airborne wall transmission loss.
Why the finished assembly matters more than the material label
No directly matched installed-wall or installed-roof test in the cited evidence compares representative aerogel blanket and foam products for both heat and sound. That means a material-level winner cannot be promoted to a whole-building verdict.
For thermal design, inspect continuous insulation, framing fraction, thermal bridges, penetrations, joints, moisture and the temperature at which the conductivity was measured. For acoustic design, inspect the entire mass–spring–mass system, cavity depth, sheathing, gypsum layers, resilient connections, flanking paths and air sealing. A narrow gap around a socket or pipe can defeat an otherwise high-performing partition.

When aerogel is the better choice
Space-constrained retrofits
Choose aerogel for consideration when every millimeter matters: thin interior upgrades, historic or architecturally constrained walls, window and door reveals, roof edges, equipment enclosures and irregular surfaces. Its high resistance per unit thickness can preserve usable room area or clearance.
High-temperature or specialized industrial work
Flexible aerogel blankets are documented for pipe and steam-distribution insulation, where they can wrap complex geometry and offer hydrophobicity alongside thermal resistance (DOE industrial steam-distribution report). Select a product rated for the actual operating temperature and exposure; a building blanket is not automatically suitable for industrial service.
Targeted thermal-bridge treatment
A thin blanket can be useful at columns, shelf angles, service penetrations or junctions where a thick board would interfere with detailing. The design still needs a continuous air, water and vapor-control strategy around the insert.

When a foam product is the better choice
Large, regular areas
For broad wall, roof or floor surfaces with adequate depth, a specified foam board or injected foam may simplify layout and reduce the number of joints. Foam is a familiar category with established installation practices, but the exact chemistry and product must be named.

Projects constrained by budget or supply
DOE identifies high aerogel material and manufacturing costs as barriers to broad building adoption (DOE project description). If the design has room for thickness, the value of aerogel’s thinness may not justify its added material, handling or procurement complexity. Compare delivered and installed costs rather than material price alone.
Assemblies with established code details
Foam products may have tested wall, roof or foundation assemblies, familiar fire stops and local installer experience. That does not make every foam type interchangeable: EPS, XPS, polyurethane and polyisocyanurate require their own datasheets, facings, adhesives, thermal-aging information and code documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical selection procedure
- Define the primary failure you are correcting. Is it heat loss, overheating, room reverberation, speech privacy, equipment vibration or a combination? Write the target metric before comparing products.
- Measure the available depth. Include framing, finishes, air gaps, service zones, compression allowance and clearances at windows, doors and equipment.
- List candidate products by exact chemistry and form. Record whether each is an aerogel blanket, aerogel board, monolith, EPS, XPS, polyurethane or polyisocyanurate product.
- Collect comparable thermal data. Use declared or measured conductivity or R-value at the intended thickness and temperature. Note whether the value is initial, aged, design or calculated.
- Request the relevant acoustic metric. Use absorption coefficients for reverberation control, transmission-loss or STC data for airborne sound, and dynamic stiffness or resonance data for vibration isolation. Reject a product that supplies only an unrelated metric.
- Evaluate the complete assembly. Check thermal bridges, joints, framing, sheathing, cavity layers, resilient connections, flanking paths and penetrations. Prefer an assembly test close to the proposed construction.
- Verify moisture, fire and durability constraints. Confirm vapor behavior, water exposure, operating temperature, flame or smoke classification, compressive strength, UV exposure and chemical compatibility from current product documents and local rules.
- Price the installed system. Include cutting waste, protective clothing, tapes, membranes, fasteners, access, specialist labor, disposal and future maintenance. Aerogel’s material cost is only one part of the decision.
- Install continuously and inspect before closing the assembly. Photograph seams, penetrations and transitions; repair gaps and compression before finishes conceal them.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing R-values without thickness: Convert every option to the same installed thickness and state the test temperature.
- Treating “foam” as one product: Keep EPS, XPS, polyurethane and polyisocyanurate separate in specifications and calculations.
- Using a material acoustic number as a wall rating: A dB/cm coupon result does not establish STC or field performance.
- Confusing absorption with isolation: Adding absorptive material inside a room may reduce echo without stopping noise through the wall.
- Ignoring frequency: A result above 2,000 Hz cannot be assumed for low-frequency traffic, music or machinery noise.
- Overlooking thermal bridges and flanking paths: Continuous framing, fasteners and air leaks can dominate the result.
- Assuming thin means easy: Aerogel blankets may require careful cutting, seam treatment, substrate preparation and protective handling.
- Copying an industrial detail into a building: Pipe insulation data cannot substitute for a wall, roof or floor assembly evaluation.

Cost, availability and lifecycle trade-offs
Aerogel’s main economic argument is saved space or improved performance where ordinary thickness is impossible. Its main liabilities are material and manufacturing cost, availability, handling requirements and the need for application-specific detailing. DOE identifies those cost and production barriers directly in its building-insulation work (DOE, 2021).
Foam can be easier to source and install in regular assemblies, but “foam” does not provide a single price or performance level. Compare the delivered system: board or blanket quantity, waste, adhesives, tapes, membranes, labor, protective equipment, fire protection and any redesign needed to accommodate thickness. A lower material price can lose its advantage if thermal bridges, moisture damage or acoustic flanking require later correction.
For either material, retain the current technical datasheet and installation instructions with the project record. Product formulations, facings, rated temperatures and code listings can change, and a result from one edition or region should not be silently applied to another.
Bottom-line decision
Select aerogel when thinness, conformability or a specialized thermal application has high value and the product has suitable fire, moisture, temperature and installation documentation. Select a specific foam product when the assembly has room for thickness, supply and tested details are stronger, or the economics favor a conventional system. For acoustics, choose by the sound metric and the complete assembly—not by the word “aerogel” or “foam” on the package.
