Aero Linux is a developer-focused Linux project built around native graphical utilities and a deliberately lean desktop. Its creator says it idles below 350MB of RAM, but that figure—and the project’s own more specific benchmark—should be treated as project-reported results, not independent measurements. There is also a version difference worth knowing: a 2026 article describes 45 standalone apps, while the current project README lists 49 GTK3 applications.

What is Aero Linux?

Aero Linux is a Linux distribution aimed at developers, systems programmers, and people who care about low-latency workflows. Its pitch is to put developer and system utilities in graphical, native apps while keeping background software overhead low.

The project README calls it “The Ultra-Lean AI & High-Performance Developer Operating System.” That is the project’s positioning, rather than an independently verified performance assessment. The current README also describes Windows-friendly and tiling desktop layouts, local AI integration through Ollama, developer command-line utilities, and a suite of GTK3 tools. These are current project descriptions and should not be assumed to have all been present in the version covered by the 2026 article.

How many native apps does it include?

The counts conflict. Ronit Gupta’s 2026 DEV Community article says the suite contains 45 standalone GTK3 apps. The current Aero Linux README says it includes 49 native GTK3 applications. Because these refer to different project-published descriptions, neither number should be silently substituted for the other.

  • Linux Mint (Cinnamon) 64-Bit - Keyboard with Full NumberPad - Fast Charging

The useful distinction is that the project presents these as standalone graphical utilities, not simply as a claim about how many packages are installed. The available information does not establish a stable app count across releases, so check the current project catalog if a particular tool matters to your workflow.

What does the low-memory claim mean?

The article’s “under 350MB RAM” figure is a threshold claim by the creator. The current README gives a more specific project-reported result: 312 MB idle RAM for Aero Linux 1.4-Supernova. The README’s comparison table reports approximately 3,850 MB for Windows 11 and approximately 1,420 MB for Ubuntu 24.04 with GNOME.

The project identifies the comparison system as an AMD Ryzen 5 5600H machine with 12 cores, 15GB RAM, and an NVMe SSD. These numbers are the project’s own reported figures; no independent reproduction or sufficiently detailed measurement protocol is established here. They should not be read as universal idle-memory results or as a general ranking of operating systems.

Ubuntu 24.04 (GNOME) Approximately 1,420 MB

To make a meaningful comparison on your own hardware, use the same machine, boot state, measurement method, and background workload. Idle memory alone also does not answer how much memory remains during a real development task; compare available memory while running the tools and workload you actually use.

What does the project say is under the hood?

Native graphical tools

Gupta’s article attributes the app suite to Python 3, PyGObject, and GTK3, with direct use of Linux system interfaces such as /proc, sysfs, and systemd. This is the creator’s description of the implementation, not a separate code audit.

Memory management

The article also describes dynamic zRAM using ZSTD compression, intended to help leave more room for active developer workloads. Compression can change the trade-off between memory use and CPU work; the claim does not by itself establish a particular compression ratio or prove that Aero Linux performs better for every workload.

How can you install or build it?

The project README documents installation via a one-command script or by cloning the repository and running its installer. It also describes a local live-ISO build route and lists an Aero Safe USB Flasher for creating live USB media. A generic USB flash drive is relevant if you choose the live-media route; the project information cited here does not establish a required capacity or endorse a specific model.

What should you verify before choosing it?

  • Release and app availability: Counts and features can differ between the article’s description and the current README; confirm that the tools you need are in the current release.
  • Hardware and workflow fit: Test the desktop, peripherals, development stack, and workload you depend on rather than inferring suitability from an idle-memory number.
  • Benchmark comparability: Treat the published figures as project results and compare systems only under matching conditions.
  • Installation readiness: Review the current install or live-ISO instructions, and prepare backups before changing a working system.
