Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
The dependable setup is to run the official Adventures of a Magician server pack on Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1, give the Java process the project’s recommended starting memory, and require every player to use the same modpack release. Download the matching server-pack ZIP, follow the start files included in that release, complete the EULA step, and test a client connection before sharing the address.
What the server needs
Adventures of a Magician is an Adventure and RPG modpack built around exploration, combat and PvP, quests, dungeons, magical progression, co-op play, and custom advancements. A server is therefore more than a vanilla world with a few extra mods: world generation, inventories, dimensions, quests, and progression data must be loaded by the same mod set on the server and on every client.
- Minecraft: 1.20.1.
- Mod loader: Forge.
- Server files: the official Adventures of a Magician ServerPack ZIP from the project’s CurseForge files.
- Memory starting point: 8 GB of RAM, as recommended on the project page. This is guidance for smoother loading, not a guaranteed minimum for every player count or configuration.
Do not mix a client download with an unrelated server archive. The server pack must match the client/modpack release. A mismatch can prevent startup, disconnect players, or create missing-mod and registry errors.
Choose the correct server-pack release
CurseForge lists the server pack as a separate downloadable artifact. The archive is intended to contain the files needed to run a multiplayer server, rather than being a second copy of the launcher profile. Select the file whose release number matches what your players install.

Those entries are dated examples from the CurseForge file history, not a promise that either is the newest file when you install. The project page was updated August 30, 2026 and showed 58,151 total downloads at that update. Check the current files list, note the exact release number, and have everyone install that same number.
Prepare before downloading
Make a version checklist
Write down the Minecraft version, Forge version shown by the pack, and modpack release before you create a world. Ask each player to record the same information from their launcher. This simple check catches the most common failure: one person launching a different release while the server is correctly configured.

Choose a dedicated server location
Create a new folder used only for this world, such as an “AdventuresOfAMagician-Server” directory. Keep it outside your personal downloads folder so that backups, logs, configuration files, and world saves remain together. Avoid extracting a new pack over an existing world; a clean directory makes it possible to roll back safely.
Plan memory and storage
The project recommends allocating 8 GB of RAM for smoother loading and fewer performance issues. Treat that as the Java process’s starting allocation, not as a guarantee. Exploration can load new chunks, dungeons and structures; more players and a larger view distance increase the working set. Leave enough memory for the operating system and other services instead of assigning all physical RAM to Java.
The server archive is hundreds of megabytes before the world, logs, backups and generated chunks are added. Keep free disk space well above the ZIP’s size and monitor growth after players begin exploring.
Install the official server pack
- Download the archive. Open the Adventures of a Magician files page on CurseForge and choose the ServerPack release that exactly matches the client release you intend to run.
- Extract to the dedicated folder. Unzip the complete archive there. Preserve its directory structure; do not move individual libraries, configuration files or scripts into a different layout.
- Read the included instructions. Server-pack releases can change their launcher files and script names. Use the Forge/server start instructions included in the archive instead of typing a command copied from another version.
- Complete the EULA step. On the first launch, Minecraft may create an EULA file and stop. Open that file, review the terms, and change the acceptance setting only if you agree. Save it in the server directory.
- Start once to generate files. Run the included start method again and allow Forge to create the world, configuration files and logs. The first run can take longer while libraries and data are prepared.
- Stop cleanly. Use the server console’s normal stop action after the initial generation. Do not close the terminal or kill the Java process while chunks or player data are being written.
If the archive contains more than one start method, select the one appropriate for your operating system and follow its comments. Never assume a script named in an older tutorial exists in the release you downloaded.

Set the memory allocation without guessing a command
Locate the Java memory options in the included start script or launcher configuration. Set the maximum heap to approximately 8 GB, following the syntax already present in that file. Some packs express the value in gigabytes and others in megabytes; preserve the file’s existing format rather than adding a second set of conflicting options.
- Assign less only when the machine cannot spare the recommended amount, then watch startup time, garbage-collection pauses and tick performance.
- Increase the allocation only after confirming that the host has unused physical memory and that the server is actually running out of heap.
- Do not confuse Java heap with total system memory: the operating system, backup tools and any control panel also need RAM.
The 8 GB recommendation comes from the project’s current page (updated August 30, 2026). It does not specify a player-count limit, a guaranteed minimum, or a universal setting for every operating system.
Install the matching client with GDLauncher
GDLauncher’s documented route avoids manually assembling individual mods:
- Open GDLauncher and choose the option to create a new instance.
- Select Minecraft 1.20.1 and the Forge loader.
- Open the instance’s Addons tab and add Adventures of a Magician.
- Allow GDLauncher to install the pack’s dependencies automatically.
- Launch the instance once before connecting. Let the launcher finish downloading and indexing files, then close it normally.
Repeat this process for every player, selecting the same release number used by the server archive. A launcher profile that merely has the same Minecraft version but a different pack release is not an adequate match.

Connect locally before opening the server to friends
Run a two-stage test
- Start the server and wait until the console indicates that it has finished loading.
- Connect from the same machine or local network with a client using the matching profile.
- Join a test world, move between several areas, open an inventory, and trigger at least one quest or advancement. This exercises registries and data that a connection-screen test will not.
- Stop the server normally, restart it, and confirm that the world, player inventory and progress persist.
Make remote access deliberate
For friends outside your home network, configure the host firewall and router forwarding required by your network, then give players the address they should use. The exact port and forwarding screen depend on your operating system, router and hosting arrangement, so use those device’s current labels rather than a generic tutorial. Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, because a connection from inside the same LAN can succeed even when internet access is blocked.
Do not publish an address until the server has a current backup and you know who can administer the machine. Keep the console and server files private; operators with file access can change mods, world data and permissions.

Back up before changing anything
Stop the server cleanly before copying the world directory. A live copy can capture half-written region or player files. Keep at least one backup outside the server folder and label it with the date and pack release.
- Back up before adding, removing or updating a mod.
- Back up before changing world-generation or dimension settings.
- Back up before upgrading to a new Adventures of a Magician release.
- Periodically test a restore on a separate directory so you know the backup is usable.
When updating, keep the old server directory intact. Create a new directory for the candidate release, copy only the data you have decided to migrate, and retain the previous folder until players have completed a successful connection and world check.
Troubleshoot the failures that matter most
The server stops during startup
Read the first error in the console and the corresponding log rather than the final “server stopped” line. Confirm that you extracted the complete archive, used its included start instructions, accepted the EULA where required, and have a supported Java installation for the pack. If a file is missing, re-download the same server-pack release and extract it into a clean directory instead of copying random files from another installation.
A player receives a missing-mod or registry error
Compare the player’s exact modpack release with the server’s release, then verify Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge on both sides. Reinstalling the client profile from the matching release is safer than manually adding a single mod, because dependencies and configuration files must remain consistent.
The world loads slowly or the server lags during exploration
Watch memory use while players generate new terrain. Exploration, structures and dungeons create work that is not visible while everyone remains in already generated chunks. Keep view distance reasonable, avoid running unrelated applications on a self-hosted machine, and adjust memory only after checking whether Java is exhausting its heap. A higher allocation cannot compensate for an overloaded CPU, slow storage or an unstable network.
Local connections work but friends cannot join
Check the host firewall, router forwarding and the address being shared. Test from outside the home network and confirm that the server is still running when the remote attempt is made. Managed hosting removes much of this home-network configuration, but you still need to use the address and connection details supplied by that provider.

- Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
Players lose progress after a crash
Restore the most recent clean backup only after stopping the server. Preserve the failed world and logs in a separate location for diagnosis. Repeated crashes after an update are a reason to revert to the previous server directory and matching client release, not to keep changing several variables at once.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Self-hosting gives you direct access to every file, mod, configuration and backup. It also makes you responsible for Java, operating-system updates, firewall and router configuration, storage, recovery, uptime and the internet connection. It is a good fit when you already administer a machine and want maximum control over the world.
A managed Minecraft host supplies a server panel and a data-center connection, usually with tools for backups, file management and restarting the instance. You trade some low-level control for less maintenance and a more predictable public endpoint. Compare providers on the questions that affect this pack:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Setup effort: Is the server pack already installed, or will you upload and extract the ZIP?
- File and mod control: Can you edit configurations, upload custom files and roll back a pack release?
- RAM options: Can the plan provide the project’s 8 GB starting recommendation with headroom for your other services?
- Backups: Are automated snapshots included, and can you download or restore them without support intervention?
- Location and latency: Is a data center near the majority of your players available?
- Support: Will support troubleshoot Forge and modpack startup problems, or only the host node?
- Uptime and maintenance: How are reboots, hardware incidents and scheduled maintenance communicated?
- Update workflow: Can you stage a new release separately and preserve the old world before switching?
- Total monthly cost: Include the plan, storage or backup add-ons, taxes, and any higher-RAM upgrade rather than comparing only an introductory figure.
Current prices, plan limits, data-center locations and affiliate terms change frequently. Verify those details on the provider’s page immediately before purchase.

When to choose each approach
Choose self-hosting when control is the priority
Use a machine you control when you are comfortable maintaining Java and the operating system, can reserve the recommended memory, and want unrestricted access to scripts, configuration and world files. This route is often the most flexible for a small group that already has a suitable always-on computer.
Choose managed hosting when reliability is the priority
Use a provider when you do not want to expose a home network, maintain backups manually, or keep a computer running continuously. Select a service that can install the exact server-pack release, expose the files you need, and provide a restore path before you migrate an established world.
Use a staged migration for an existing world
Do not point a new host directly at your only copy. Upload or install the pack in a fresh instance, restore a copy of the world, test with one or two players, and switch the group only after inventories, quests and dimensions behave as expected.
Final verification before inviting players
Start the server from its supplied launch method, wait for a completed Forge load, and connect with the exact client profile selected for the server. Travel far enough to generate new terrain, exercise a quest or advancement, disconnect, restart, and reconnect. If all of those checks pass and a clean backup exists, share the connection details with the group. Keep the release number, backup location and administrator contact in a note so the next update does not become a version hunt.
