To print an Adobe PDF, open it in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader, select Print, choose the printer and pages, set the paper and scaling options, review the preview, and select Print. The important choice is how the PDF should be sized: Fit fills the selected paper’s printable area, Actual size preserves the document’s scale but can crop oversized content, and Shrink oversized pages reduces only pages that are too large.

The labels and available controls can vary by Acrobat or Reader release, operating system, printer, and driver. The workflow below separates the universal steps from printer-dependent settings, then gives a troubleshooting sequence for jobs that do not print.

How to print an Adobe PDF

Use this sequence for a normal one-sided or two-sided print job. Keep the PDF open in the desktop Acrobat application or Acrobat Reader rather than relying on a browser’s simplified print dialog when you need page-range, scaling, comments, or layout controls.

  1. Open the PDF. Confirm that the file is fully downloaded and opens without an error.
  2. Open the print dialog. Choose File > Print or select the printer icon, depending on your release.
  3. Select the printer. Choose the intended printer from the printer list and set the number of copies.
  4. Choose the pages. Select All, the current page, or a custom range. Enter individual pages and ranges in the format accepted by the dialog, such as 1,3,5-8. Acrobat Pro also exposes odd-page, even-page, and reverse-order choices in its print settings. See Adobe’s print instructions for Acrobat Reader and Acrobat Pro print settings.
  5. Choose sizing and handling. Pick Fit, Actual size, Shrink oversized pages, or Custom Scale according to the document’s purpose.
  6. Set orientation and paper. Choose portrait or landscape, then verify the paper size, source tray, and any printer-specific properties. Use Page Setup or the equivalent printer-properties button if the paper source is not correct.
  7. Choose optional content. If available, decide whether comments, annotations, or form fields should be printed. Check the preview after changing this setting.
  8. Inspect the preview. Look at the first page and move through the other pages in the job. Confirm that text, graphics, margins, page order, and the selected paper all look right.
  9. Select Print. If the printer has its own confirmation or finishing dialog, verify those settings before submitting the job.

Adobe documents the controls and preview behavior in its Acrobat Reader print workflow. A preview is not merely decorative: it reveals a wrong page range, a clipped edge caused by Actual size, a rotated page, or a form/comment setting before paper and toner are used.

Choose the correct PDF scaling option

Scaling determines whether Acrobat changes the PDF’s dimensions before sending it to the printer. Select the option based on whether fitting the sheet or preserving the original measurement matters more.

Option What it does Use it when Main risk
Fit Scales each page up or down so it fits the selected paper’s printable area. The complete page must appear on the chosen sheet, including ordinary office documents with margins. The printed dimensions are changed, so it is not appropriate when a measured scale must be preserved.
Actual size Prints without scaling. The PDF’s original dimensions must remain unchanged and the page already fits the paper. Content extending beyond the paper can be cropped.
Shrink oversized pages Reduces pages that are too large while leaving smaller pages at their original size. A file mixes normal pages with a few oversized drawings, scans, or inserts. Small pages are not enlarged to fill the sheet.
Custom Scale Applies a percentage that you specify. You have a known target percentage or need a deliberate, repeatable resize. An incorrect percentage can make the page too small or crop it.

Adobe describes these behaviors in Adjust page size for printing PDFs in Acrobat. For engineering, legal, architectural, or form documents, verify a printed measurement and the margins after the first sheet. Actual size avoids Acrobat scaling, but it does not make an oversized page fit a smaller sheet.

Select pages, comments, forms, and order

Print all pages, one page, or a range

All sends the complete document. Current page is useful when the page visible in the document window is the only one needed. A custom range lets you combine individual pages and consecutive ranges, reducing waste when only selected sections are required. Read the preview’s page count rather than assuming the range was interpreted correctly.

Include or omit comments and form fields

Acrobat’s print dialog can offer separate choices for document content, comments, and form fields. Use the preview to confirm whether annotations appear and whether completed form values are included. A form that looks filled on screen can produce an unexpected paper result if the dialog is set to print only the document content.

Use odd/even pages and reverse order in Acrobat Pro

Acrobat Pro documents controls for odd pages, even pages, and reverse page order. These are useful for manual duplex workflows: print one parity, reload the stack, and print the other parity in the required order. The correct reload direction depends on the printer’s feed path, so test with a short range first. The available controls are listed in Adobe’s Acrobat Pro print-settings guide.

Match paper size, tray, and orientation

Set paper size and orientation before printing

Choose the paper size that is physically loaded and supported by the selected printer. Then set portrait or landscape, either in Acrobat’s print dialog or in the printer properties it opens. If the PDF is wider than the selected paper, changing orientation may prevent clipping; it does not replace an intentional scale choice.

Use the PDF page size to select paper sources

For files containing different page dimensions, enable Choose paper source by PDF page size when the option is available. Acrobat can then request paper matching each page instead of forcing every page through one tray. Adobe’s mixed-size procedure is documented at Print PDFs with mixed page sizes in Acrobat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A custom paper-size control may also be required for a nonstandard page. The printer must support that size and have the appropriate tray or manual-feed path. If the printer cannot supply one of the requested sizes, the job may pause for paper, substitute another tray, or fail; choose a supported size or print the affected pages separately.

Understand printable margins

Most printers cannot mark the entire physical sheet. Fit accounts for the selected printer’s printable area, while Actual size does not compensate for it. If an edge disappears, first inspect the preview, then compare the page dimensions with the printer’s non-printable margins before changing the document.

Print double-sided, grayscale, multiple pages, or a poster

Double-sided printing

Select Print on both sides when the printer supports automatic duplex. Choose the flip edge—typically long-edge or short-edge—so the reverse side reads in the intended direction. Duplex availability and the exact flip controls come from the printer and its driver; if Acrobat does not show the option, open printer properties or consult the model’s documentation. Adobe lists duplex in its Reader print help.

Black-and-white or grayscale

Choose grayscale in the print dialog or printer properties when color is unnecessary. The label may be Grayscale, Black and white, or a similar driver-specific term. Check the preview and one test page if light colors, shaded tables, or accessibility contrast are important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several PDF pages on one sheet

Select Multiple (also called n-up printing), choose the pages-per-sheet value, and set the reading order offered by the dialog. This reduces paper but also reduces text size. It is appropriate for handouts, reference copies, or slide-style pages, not for documents that must remain at their original reading size.

Tile a large page across several sheets

Select Poster to divide one large PDF page across multiple sheets. Set overlap when you need alignment room for trimming or taping. Poster output is a layout operation: it does not make the original page fit on one sheet. Confirm the tile count and edge labels in the preview before printing.

Print only part of a PDF page

To print a chart, image, or other region rather than the full page, use Acrobat or Reader’s snapshot workflow:

  1. Choose the Take a Snapshot tool.
  2. Drag around the area to print. Acrobat copies the selected region as a graphic.
  3. Open Print and select Selected graphic in the print dialog.
  4. Choose Fit if the selection should be resized to the sheet, or use another scale choice when a specific size is required.
  5. Review the preview for unwanted margins or cropping, then print.

Adobe’s exact procedure is in Print a portion of a PDF page in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader. A snapshot is a graphic selection, so text may not remain selectable in the printed result; use the full-page workflow when document structure matters.

Why can’t I print my document?

When a PDF will not print, work from the physical printer outward to the file. This order separates connection problems from driver problems and then from Acrobat- or PDF-specific failures.

1. Check the printer and connection

  • Confirm that the printer is powered on, connected, online, and loaded with the required paper.
  • Inspect the cable or network connection. For a USB printer, connect it directly to the computer instead of through a USB hub when possible.
  • Cancel stalled jobs in the operating system’s print queue.
  • Power-cycle the printer, wait for it to finish startup, reopen the PDF, and try again.

These checks follow Adobe’s PDF printing troubleshooting guidance and its printing-error procedure.

2. Verify the model-specific driver

Identify the exact printer model and install the driver intended for that model and your operating system. A generic or wrong-model driver can hide duplex, tray, paper-size, or color controls and can cause rendering failures. Adobe notes that manufacturers regularly update drivers to improve compatibility with current Acrobat and Reader versions. Use the manufacturer’s support page for the model rather than selecting a superficially similar device.

3. Update Acrobat or Reader and test outside the PDF

Install available Acrobat or Reader updates, then print an operating-system test page or a different simple document. If another document prints, the printer path is probably working and the PDF deserves closer inspection. If no document prints, continue with the printer, queue, connection, or driver rather than repeatedly changing PDF settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Save a local copy and reopen it

A PDF opened from a browser, email attachment, removable drive, or cloud location may not be fully available to Acrobat. Save it to a local drive, close the original view, reopen the saved copy, and submit the job again. If the downloaded file is incomplete or damaged, obtain a fresh copy from its author or source.

5. Try Print as Image for a file-specific failure

For a PDF that displays correctly but produces blank pages, missing graphics, or a stalled job, open the print dialog’s Advanced settings and choose Print as Image. This rasterizes each page before sending it to the driver, which can bypass problematic fonts, transparency, clipping paths, or complex vector objects. It may increase processing time and output size, so use it as a diagnostic or targeted workaround rather than the default for every job. Adobe documents this option in its PDF printing error guidance.

6. Isolate the page or object that fails

Print one page or a small batch instead of the entire document. If one page consistently fails while others work, the problem may be a damaged object, transparency effect, embedded font, or unusually complex graphic on that page. Continue narrowing the range until you identify the smallest failing set, then request a corrected PDF or export a replacement page from the authoring application.

Adobe has an older, specialized article on printing complex PDF documents, including advanced transparency-flattening approaches. Reserve those professional options for complex files after ordinary connection, driver, update, local-copy, and Print as Image checks have failed.

Handle password and printing restrictions correctly

A PDF can be protected with permissions that disable printing. If Acrobat reports that printing is not allowed, the restriction belongs to the document’s security settings, not to the printer. Do not attempt to bypass it. Contact the document’s author or administrator and request a print-enabled copy or the required password. Adobe addresses this case in its Reader printing help.

A practical decision guide before selecting Print

  • Need every page visible on ordinary paper? Select Fit.
  • Need original dimensions for a measured document? Select Actual size, confirm that the page fits, and check a measurement on the first print.
  • Have a mixed file with a few large pages? Select Shrink oversized pages.
  • Need one known percentage? Use Custom Scale and verify the preview.
  • Have different page sizes? Enable Choose paper source by PDF page size and confirm that the printer has every required size and tray.
  • Need a booklet-like result? Use duplex with the correct flip edge, or print odd and even pages separately when automatic duplex is unavailable.
  • Need handouts? Use Multiple and select pages per sheet.
  • Need a wall-size page? Use Poster and set overlap.
  • Need only a chart or region? Use Take a Snapshot, then print Selected graphic.
  • Job fails while other documents print? Save the PDF locally, isolate a page, and try Print as Image.

These choices keep the document’s purpose, paper supply, and printer capability aligned. Always inspect the preview and verify the first physical page when scale, page order, color, or form data matters.
