Adobe Acrobat lets you edit text and images in an existing PDF, reorganize pages, and use OCR to make scanned pages editable. It is most straightforward for local corrections; extensive reflow, unavailable fonts, document restrictions, and imperfect scan recognition can make editing harder.
What you can edit directly in Acrobat
Acrobat’s Edit tool supports adding, replacing, formatting, and deleting text, as well as changing images and other objects. That makes it useful for fixing a typo, adjusting text appearance, or replacing an image without rebuilding the entire document. Adobe describes these editing capabilities in its text-editing help and Acrobat features overview.
For a small correction, editing the PDF itself can be simpler than returning to the original authoring application. If the change affects long passages or the design needs substantial reworking, exporting the PDF to an editable format may be a more practical starting point.

- Open the PDF and choose Edit. The precise label or location can vary between Acrobat versions and platforms.
- Select the text or image. Use the editing controls to replace or add text, adjust formatting, or change an object.
- Check the surrounding layout. Review line breaks, spacing, alignment, and nearby content; a change in one area may affect the appearance of that text box.
- Save the edited PDF. Reopen or review the saved file to confirm the change appears as intended.
Adobe’s PDF editing guide outlines the basic editing sequence. Interface details can differ, so use the controls shown in your version rather than assuming every platform has identical labels.

Can Acrobat edit a scanned PDF?
Yes. Adobe says Acrobat automatically runs OCR when a scanned PDF is opened for editing, converting recognized text and images into editable content. OCR can save the work of recreating a page from scratch, but recognition should not be treated as proof that every word is correct. Inspect the result—especially names, numbers, punctuation, and wording that must be exact—before relying on or distributing the edited document. See Adobe’s text-editing documentation.
Why text changes can disrupt a PDF’s layout
Text boxes are independent
PDF text is organized into separate boxes rather than a continuous document flow. Text can reflow inside the box you edit, but extra content will not automatically push an adjacent box down or continue onto the next page. If an edit is longer than the available space, review the page and adjust the content or layout deliberately.

Font availability affects what you can change
Adobe’s guidance distinguishes among fonts installed on your system, fonts embedded in the PDF, and fonts that are neither installed nor embedded. Existing text can be edited with an installed font. If a font is embedded but not installed, editing is limited to changing color or size; if it is neither installed nor embedded, that text cannot be edited. These restrictions can make a seemingly simple wording change difficult.

Reorder, rotate, merge, or split pages
Acrobat’s page organization tools can reorder, delete, and rotate pages. Adobe also lists merging and splitting PDFs among its features. These tools address document structure rather than the wording on a page, so use them when the task is to change how pages are arranged or which pages are included.
Page organization requires permission to edit. Security settings can limit editing, printing, or copying, and a signed PDF may be locked against changes. If a page action is unavailable, check the document’s security or permissions rather than assuming the control is missing. When exporting is a better route
Acrobat can export PDFs into formats including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and image files. Exporting can be useful when a revision involves broad rewriting or changes that are easier to manage in an authoring application. Conversion may alter layout, so inspect the exported document before continuing and check the final PDF after saving or converting back. Adobe lists export options in its desktop overview and features page.
Special case: interactive XFA forms
Adobe warns that forms created in LiveCycle Designer using XFA cannot be edited in Acrobat without losing interactivity. If preserving the form’s interactive behavior matters, do not treat it like an ordinary PDF page; use the appropriate form-authoring workflow instead. See Adobe’s PDF editing guidance.
Choose the editing route by the job
- Small correction in selectable text: try Acrobat’s Edit tool, then inspect the text box and surrounding layout.
- Scanned page: let OCR run and verify recognized text before using it.
- Large rewrite or substantial layout changes: consider exporting to an authoring format and review the conversion.
- Page arrangement change: use page organization controls, provided the document allows editing.
- Protected, signed, or interactive form: check restrictions and form type before making changes that could be blocked or remove functionality.
