Adding a compatible 16GB RAM module to an existing 8GB module gives you 24GB of installed memory if your computer supports and recognizes both. It does not necessarily make all 24GB run in dual-channel mode, and it does not guarantee a particular speed or performance gain. Compatibility, module placement, and how heavily your workload uses memory determine what happens.
What happens to memory channels with 8GB plus 16GB?
On supported systems with the right module placement, unequal memory capacities can use a mixed arrangement. Intel calls this Flex Memory: the matching capacity across the two memory channels operates in a symmetric, dual-channel zone, while the extra capacity on the larger side operates in an asymmetric, single-channel zone.
For an 8GB module in one channel and a 16GB module in the other, the conceptual split is 16GB in the symmetric zone and 8GB in the asymmetric zone. This describes a supported configuration, not a guarantee for every computer. The memory controller, platform, and slot placement determine whether and how this behavior is available. Intel’s 13th Generation Intel Core processor datasheet describes the symmetric and asymmetric zones and states that symmetric mode provides maximum performance on real-world applications.

Will the upgrade make your computer faster?
It may help if your usual tasks were running short of available memory. More capacity can give the operating system and applications more room to work, which may improve responsiveness; Intel also notes that additional RAM may help game frame rates. But a system that was not memory-constrained may show little noticeable change. No universal performance percentage or frame-rate increase is established for adding a 16GB module to an 8GB configuration.

For gaming, Intel recommends looking at benchmarks for the games and system configuration you care about rather than assuming that more RAM alone will produce a specific result. The benefit depends on the workload and the rest of the computer.
Check compatibility before buying
The 8GB + 16GB arithmetic does not establish that the modules will work together. Check the computer or motherboard manual, the processor’s memory specifications, and the manufacturer’s compatibility information. Intel’s RAM selection guide also recommends using system documentation or a compatibility tool.

- Memory generation: Confirm the computer supports the module’s DDR generation. Generations are not interchangeable; for example, DDR4 cannot replace DDR3.
- Form factor: Check whether the system needs a desktop DIMM or a laptop SO-DIMM. They are different physical formats.
- Capacity and upgradeability: Verify the supported maximum capacity, available slots, and whether any memory is soldered. Some laptop memory is not intended to be replaced.
- Speed and timings: Confirm the module is supported. When modules have different speeds or timings, the system may operate at a lower setting.
- Slot placement: On systems with multiple slots, use the manufacturer’s recommended arrangement. The manual identifies the correct slots for channel operation.
Intel recommends identical capacity, speed, and timings for ideal performance. A compatible mixed configuration can still be useful, but matching modules or a matched kit can reduce uncertainty about specifications.
What are the risks of mixing modules?
Mixed modules can run below the speed you expected, or a particular configuration may fail to boot. These outcomes are platform- and configuration-specific, not proof that every 8GB-plus-16GB combination will fail.

For example, Intel’s guidance for 600-series motherboards supporting 12th Generation Intel Core processors warns that mixed part numbers in a particular two-DIMMs-per-channel configuration can result in lower-than-target speed or a system that does not boot in the specified setup. Intel also documents a density-related boot failure for the specific NUC12WS configuration. Follow the guidance for your exact model rather than applying these cases to all computers: Intel 600-series memory installation guidance and Intel’s NUC12WS support case.
Adding more DIMMs can also affect memory frequency on some systems. Intel addresses that issue in its support guidance, Will the Memory Frequency Downgrade When Installing More DIMMs on a Motherboard? Check the guidance for your platform and the memory population rules in its manual.

Should you add a 16GB module or replace both sticks?
Neither option is universally better. Adding one compatible 16GB module keeps the existing 8GB module in place and can provide 24GB total if the system supports it. Replacing both modules with a matched kit can reduce uncertainty about matching capacity, speed, and timings. Choose based on your computer’s supported configuration and your need for capacity and future expansion.

- Choose an added module when your system explicitly supports the combination and its total capacity meets your needs.
- Consider a matched kit when matching specifications is important or the system maker recommends paired modules.
