The right memory card for a tablet is the one its exact model supports—not simply the fastest or largest card on sale. Check that your tablet has a microSD slot, confirm its maximum supported capacity, then choose a card whose speed class meets the tablet’s requirements. Samsung’s EVO Plus and PRO Plus are maker-listed examples for tablets, but neither fits every model or capacity limit.

How to check whether your tablet accepts a memory card

  1. Find the exact model number. Check the tablet’s Settings, original packaging, or the label on the device. A product-family name alone may not identify the right specification.
  2. Look up the model’s specifications or support page. Confirm that it has a microSD slot and note the maximum card capacity and required speed class or bus support. Samsung cautions that maximum capacity depends on the tablet model, and regional specifications can differ: Samsung’s UK Galaxy tablet capacity guide applies its listed figures to UK and Ireland models.
  3. Check the card’s capacity-specific specifications. A product line can include cards with different capacities and speed ratings. Verify the specifications for the exact card you plan to buy, not just the name on the package.

For example, Amazon’s Fire tablet guidance lists maximum microSD capacities by generation: up to 200GB for 5th- and 6th-generation tablets, 256GB for 7th-generation tablets, 512GB for 8th- and 9th-generation tablets, and 1TB for 10th-generation and newer tablets. Amazon recommends UHS or at least Class 4 for a non-UHS card. See its Fire tablet microSD troubleshooting guidance and check the entry for your device.

What size memory card does your tablet accept?

There is no universal tablet maximum. The device maker’s specification for your exact model is the deciding limit; a card’s format label does not prove that a tablet can use every capacity within that format.

The SD Association defines SDHC as cards with more than 2GB through 32GB, and SDXC as cards with more than 32GB through 2TB. SDXC uses exFAT in the association’s capacity table. These are card-standard definitions, not a guarantee of tablet compatibility. The microSD form factor measures 11 × 15 × 1.0 mm. See the SD Association’s capacity definitions.

Samsung’s UK guide illustrates the model-by-model variation: it lists maximums of up to 1TB for Galaxy Tab S7 and S6 models, up to 512GB for Galaxy Tab S5e and some Galaxy Tab A models, and 256GB for Galaxy Tab S3. Those figures are for UK and Ireland models; other regions may differ. Confirm your own tablet’s current regional specification rather than relying on a nearby model’s limit.

What speed class should a tablet memory card have?

Use the minimum class required by the tablet, or a higher class the tablet supports. Speed-class symbols indicate a minimum sequential-write speed under defined conditions; they are not a promise of the card’s maximum read speed or of a particular speed in your tablet. A card’s speed bus and class also need to match what the host device can use. The SD Association’s speed-class overview explains the ratings and host-matching guidance.

For storing photos, videos, downloads, or other media, capacity and compatibility are usually the first things to settle. Paying more for a higher performance rating only makes sense if the tablet and your use can benefit from it. Do not assume a larger number printed on the package will make everyday tablet use faster.

Card line Maker-listed tablet compatibility Capacity and speed details in Samsung’s announcement What to verify
Samsung EVO Plus Samsung lists Android tablets among compatible devices. Announced in 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB capacities. Class specifications vary by capacity. Samsung lists transfer speeds up to 160MB/s. Check the chosen capacity’s class rating and confirm the tablet accepts that capacity.
Samsung PRO Plus Samsung lists Android tablets among compatible devices. Announced in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB capacities; listed as U3/V30/A2, with sequential read and write figures up to 180MB/s and 130MB/s. Confirm the tablet supports the capacity, and treat the figures as manufacturer-reported maximums, not expected tablet speeds.

Samsung’s speed figures come from controlled conditions using Samsung readers. The company says actual performance can vary with card capacity, host device, and environment. They are not independent comparative test results or a guarantee of performance in a tablet. Consult Samsung’s 2024 EVO Plus and PRO Plus announcement and the current specifications for the card generation being sold.

Will extra card storage let you install more apps?

Not necessarily. Amazon says Fire tablets running Fire OS 6 or newer cannot install apps and games to a microSD card. A card can still provide additional storage for supported content, but it does not remove that software limitation. Check your tablet’s operating-system guidance before buying a card mainly for app installation: Amazon’s Fire tablet microSD guidance.
