RAG is an architectural extension to an existing .NET estate, not a reason to replace its applications or move every source of data. The key decisions are where retrieval fits in the application, how source data becomes traceable context, and how searches enforce relevance and access rules. The right design depends on your runtime, data sources, identity model, hosting constraints, and workload.
1. Where should the .NET integration boundary sit?
Start by mapping the boundaries your estate already has: application services, dependency injection and configuration, deployment units, and the teams responsible for operating them. Put RAG where it fits those boundaries rather than introducing a separate architecture by default.
Microsoft’s .NET AI guidance describes Microsoft.Extensions.AI as application-level AI abstractions and Microsoft.Extensions.VectorData as an abstraction layer for vector stores. They can help keep application code less tightly coupled to a particular provider or store. Direct SDK use is also a documented path when an existing service or provider needs lower-level control.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose an abstraction when you want a narrower provider seam
Use an abstraction if you want application code to depend on a stable interface while provider-specific setup stays in a smaller integration layer. That can make a later provider change easier to contain. It does not make providers interchangeable in every respect: configuration, supported features, and operating behavior can still differ.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a direct SDK when its specific control matters
A direct SDK can be appropriate when a provider’s capabilities or an existing service’s behavior are central to the design. The trade-off is that provider-specific code may spread further into the application unless you deliberately keep it behind a boundary.
For an established estate, make this decision in light of its existing composition and operational ownership. The abstraction itself does not determine where the retrieval service runs, how it is deployed, or which team maintains it.
2. How will existing data become retrievable and traceable?
RAG supplies a model with retrieved context at question time; it does not require training the model on private source data. A retrieval pipeline processes source content, splits larger documents into chunks, creates searchable representations, stores them with metadata, and retrieves relevant pieces for a user’s query.

Decide what remains the source of truth
Existing databases, repositories, files, or content systems can remain authoritative while a separate index serves retrieval. This separates ownership of the original information from the representation optimized for search. Alternatively, a managed ingestion path may fit if it meets the estate’s requirements for data freshness, ownership, and operations. Do not assume an index is current simply because it exists: decide how changes, deletions, and reprocessing reach it.
Preserve the path back to the original material
Store source identifiers and useful metadata with each chunk. Depending on the estate, that may include document identity, location, version, or other fields needed to find the original material and apply filters. This gives the application a way to trace retrieved context to its source instead of presenting an unlocatable fragment.
Chunking, enrichment, embedding choice, and index design depend on document structure and the questions users ask. A chunk that is too broad may bring in irrelevant material; one that is too narrow may lose context. Treat these as design choices to evaluate on representative data, not settings with one universally correct value.

Match the retrieval architecture to query complexity
Microsoft’s guidance distinguishes classic RAG, which can suit teams seeking simplicity, existing orchestration, or fine-grained control, from agentic retrieval for complex conversational queries and more advanced retrieval needs. This is a decision aid, not a ranking: begin with the least complex approach that meets the workload, then establish with evaluation whether more involved retrieval is warranted.

3. How will retrieval balance relevance with access rules?
Retrieval must answer two separate questions: which content is relevant, and which of that content may this caller see? A strong relevance result is still a failure if it includes a document outside the caller’s permissions.
Choose a retrieval method against real questions
Keyword or full-text search can be useful when exact terms matter. Vector search compares semantic representations, which can help when a user’s wording differs from the source wording. Hybrid search combines text and vector queries. Azure AI Search, for example, runs hybrid components in parallel and fuses their rankings with Reciprocal Rank Fusion.

| Approach | What it matches | What to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword or full-text | Terms and lexical matches in the query and documents | Whether exact terminology and expected wording retrieve the right material |
| Vector | Similarity between semantic representations | Whether meaning-based matches help on the estate’s actual questions |
| Hybrid | Text and vector signals, with rankings combined | Whether the combination improves relevance enough to justify its configuration and operation |
Microsoft recommends hybrid queries in Azure guidance as a way to combine lexical and semantic signals, but that recommendation does not establish the best method for every workload. Compare candidates using representative questions and data, and measure relevance alongside latency, complexity, filtering needs, and operational control. The available guidance does not supply a universal benchmark that selects an architecture for an unspecified estate.
Enforce authorization as part of retrieval
For multi-tenant or permissioned content, derive tenant and authorization context from the authenticated request and enforce it through search security filters or application-controlled logic. Do not treat a passage as safe to use merely because it is in the index. Reuse the estate’s identity provider and access model where the selected architecture supports that safely, and validate that a caller cannot retrieve content outside their permissions.
A more managed retrieval route may reduce the control the application has over tenant routing and authorization enforcement compared with a direct, application-controlled search query. Assess that boundary before choosing convenience over control.

Turn the choices into an implementation decision
Write down the constraints before selecting components. These are the inputs that change the answer:
- Application fit: current .NET orchestration, dependency injection, hosting, and deployment practices.
- Data ownership: authoritative systems, update and deletion behavior, freshness needs, and responsibility for the index.
- Query behavior: representative questions, exact-term needs, semantic variation, and conversational complexity.
- Access model: identity provider, tenant boundaries, document permissions, and where enforcement will occur.
- Operations: provider-specific control, pipeline maintenance, observability, and team ownership.
- Evaluation: how relevance, traceability, latency, and access enforcement will be checked on representative cases.
Then test the complete path: update source content, process and index it, submit a realistic authenticated query, inspect the retrieved chunks and their source metadata, and verify that unauthorized material is excluded. Keep the original sources authoritative unless the estate has a deliberate reason to change that ownership. The practical design is the one that fits the existing boundaries while meeting measured relevance and access requirements—not the one with the most elaborate retrieval architecture.
