Add Page Numbers to a PDF Online: Browser Steps and Tool Limits

To add visible page numbers to a PDF in your browser, use an online PDF numbering tool, upload the file, set the page range and number placement, then process and download the edited PDF. A browser viewer’s page counter only tracks your position; it does not add numbers to the document.

How to add page numbers to a PDF online

1. Open a browser-based PDF page-numbering tool and select the PDF from your device.

2. Choose which pages to number. Set the starting page and number where the tool provides those controls.

3. Select a header or footer position and an alignment, such as left, center, or right. Choose a number style and appearance if available.

4. Process or save the file, then download the numbered PDF.

5. Open the downloaded copy and inspect pages with different layouts to confirm the numbers are visible and positioned as intended.

Adobe’s stated web workflow is Edit > Number pages: choose a file, set the position and page range, adjust formatting under More if needed, and save. Adobe says the numbered document is automatically saved to its cloud storage. Adobe’s instructions for adding page numbers explain the workflow.

Sejda	Its page states that the free service is limited to documents up to 200 pages or 50 MB, with three tasks per hour. These are the page’s published limits, not a permanent guarantee. Sejda page-numbering tool	Not stated on the cited page.

Choose the page range and numbering style

Decide whether the cover, contents, or other preliminary pages should receive numbers before processing. If numbering starts later in the file, distinguish the first page to mark from the number printed on it: for example, a document may begin numbering its body at 1 even though that page is not the PDF’s first page. Use the tool’s page-range and starting-number controls to match that structure.

Check how the number will sit on the page. A centered footer is conventional, but a header or left/right alignment may be preferable when a page has a busy bottom margin. Styling options vary: PDF24 lists controls for font, size, color, transparency, position, angle, and spacing, while Adobe describes formatting controls under More. Confirm the result on pages with different content and margins.

What to know before uploading

• Check the file limit first. Adobe states a 100 MB maximum; Sejda publishes limits of 200 pages or 50 MB and three tasks per hour for its free service. Limits can change, so check the relevant service page before relying on them.

• Do not assume browser-based means local processing. PDF24 says its numbering runs on its servers. Adobe describes cloud saving in its help instructions, while a separate regional service page describes server handling and deletion unless signed in to save.

• Use care with confidential documents. Vendor statements do not replace checking current service terms or following your organization’s document-handling policy. If a file cannot be uploaded under those rules, use an approved offline PDF editor instead.

Adding numbers is different from navigating to a page

A PDF viewer’s page indicator shows where you are in the file; it does not insert visible numbers into the pages. Adobe also documents a URL fragment, #page=[page number], for opening a hosted PDF at a particular page. That changes navigation, not the PDF’s printed or visible page numbering.
