There is not enough accessible information to reproduce the Baize-specific steps or verify the “5 minutes” claim. The indexed DEV Community post is dated September 16, 2026, but its body was unavailable. You can still use Spring AI’s official quickstart as a separate, generic route to make a model call from a Spring Boot app—but it does not prove that Baize works with Spring AI or that it is the tutorial’s intended model.

What is known about the Baize tutorial

DEV Community indexes a post by rebornace titled “Add AI to Your Legacy System in 5 Minutes: A Baize Hands-On Tutorial (Spring Boot Example).” The listing identifies it as a 10-minute read, dated September 16, 2026, and tagged AI, agents, and Go. Those are listing details, not evidence that integration takes five minutes. The page’s tutorial instructions were not available, so its dependency coordinates, endpoint, authentication, request format, and results cannot be confirmed. See the indexed DEV Community post.

A verified Spring AI path for one model call

Spring AI’s official quickstart shows a general pattern for a Spring Boot web application: add a model starter, configure provider credentials, build a ChatClient, send a prompt, and run the app. The example uses OpenAI configuration; it does not establish Baize compatibility. 1. Create or identify the application. Use a Spring Boot web application and select a model starter appropriate to the provider you intend to call.
  2. Configure credentials securely. The quickstart demonstrates spring.ai.openai.api-key=<YOUR OPENAI KEY> in application.properties. For a real application, supply the secret through an appropriate secret-management or environment-specific configuration mechanism; do not commit a live key to source control.
  3. Build a client and call the model. The documented example injects ChatClient.Builder, builds a client, then calls chatClient.prompt("Tell me a joke").call().content() to obtain a response.
  4. Run the application. From the project directory, the quickstart uses ./mvnw spring-boot:run.

These steps describe the official Spring AI example, not a reconstruction of the inaccessible Baize tutorial. A Baize integration would need a confirmed provider, serving endpoint, protocol, and compatible Spring AI integration before its configuration could be specified reliably.

Check Spring Boot and Spring AI versions first

The Spring AI Getting Started reference identifies version 2.0.1 and says the 2.0.x line supports Spring Boot 4.0.x and 4.1.x. If the legacy application uses another Spring Boot version, do not copy the current Spring AI dependency version without checking compatibility. Spring’s documentation describes using Spring Initializr, Maven Central, and the Spring AI BOM with the relevant model-specific module or starter. Spring AI Getting Started.

Spring AI offers portable APIs and integrations for chat, images, transcription, speech, embeddings, vector stores, tool calling, advisors, MCP, and data-loading workflows. These capabilities are options, not prerequisites for a first chat call. Choose only the components the application needs. Spring AI API reference.

Hosted model API or local Baize inference?

The available evidence points to two different deployment patterns, not interchangeable configurations. A hosted model API requires choosing a provider and model, handling credentials, and ensuring the application can reach the provider. Local inference means operating the model and its serving stack yourself; an API starter example alone does not supply that setup.

Route What it involves Important qualification
Hosted model API through Spring AI A model starter, provider credentials, network access, and a Spring Boot/Spring AI version combination that is supported. The official quickstart illustrates OpenAI configuration. It does not verify Baize as a Spring AI provider.
Local Project Baize inference Running a Baize model with the serving approach documented by Project Baize, plus suitable hardware and software. Project Baize documents FastChat for its CLI/API. Confirm that this is the Baize meant by the tutorial and how its endpoint is exposed before connecting a Spring application.

“Baize” may refer to different projects

The repository located for Project Baize describes a LLaMA-based chatbot and documents using FastChat for its CLI/API. The available evidence does not establish that this is the same Baize intended by the DEV post. Project Baize’s README also states that its code, model weights, and data are for research use only and commercial use is prohibited. Apply that restriction only if you have confirmed you are using this project; it should not be generalized to every project or service called Baize. Project Baize repository.

Local inference has substantial documented VRAM requirements

Project Baize’s repository lists the following VRAM figures for inference. They are project-reported requirements, not independent hardware test results.

Project Baize model Repository-listed VRAM for inference
Baize-7B 16 GB
Baize-13B 28 GB
Baize-30B 67 GB

The repository mentions int8 inference as an option for lower-memory GPUs but does not give a specific reduced-memory threshold in the cited documentation. Verify current model, runtime, and hardware requirements before planning a deployment.
