Add Spanish or another language for typing without changing the language of your iPhone’s menus. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard, choose the language or Spanish variant, then switch to that keyboard as you type.
Add Spanish or another keyboard language
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Keyboard.
- Tap Keyboards, then Add New Keyboard.
- Choose the Spanish keyboard variant you want. To add another language, repeat these steps and select that language. The available Spanish choices can vary by iOS version and locale. See Apple’s iPhone keyboard guide.
Switch to the new keyboard while typing
Open a text field to show the onscreen keyboard. Touch and hold the Emoji button or the Switch Keyboard key, then tap the keyboard you want to use. You can repeat this whenever you need to move between languages. Apple documents the steps in its guide to adding or changing keyboards.
Type Spanish accents and punctuation
On the onscreen keyboard, press and hold the letter related to the accented character, then choose the form you need. For example, press and hold e to select é. Apple’s onscreen keyboard guide explains how to enter accented characters.
Choose a separate keyboard or bilingual typing
A separate Spanish keyboard is the straightforward option: add it, then select it from the keyboard switcher when you want to type in Spanish. Apple also supports bilingual typing for some language pairs, so you can type in two languages without switching keyboards. Its example is English (U.S.) and Spanish (Latin America); this option is not available for every language combination. Check Apple’s keyboard guide for details.

Keep the iPhone display language unchanged
Adding a keyboard is an input setting; it does not by itself change the language used for iPhone menus. Apple manages display language and region separately under Settings > General > Language & Region. Adding a keyboard language also adds it to Preferred Languages, but that alone does not change the display language. See Apple’s language and region instructions.

Remove a keyboard
Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards, swipe left on the keyboard you want to remove, and tap Delete.

Change the order
On the same Keyboards screen, tap Edit, drag the reorder control beside a keyboard, then tap Done. Apple’s keyboard guide covers both options.

Using a physical keyboard
You do not need an external keyboard to type Spanish on the iPhone’s onscreen keyboard. If you use Magic Keyboard, Apple documents switching language keyboards with Control-Space in its Magic Keyboard instructions. For physical keys that lack the labels you need, Apple also explains entering characters with diacritical marks.
