To add another keyboard language, use your keyboard’s settings—not necessarily your phone’s system-language setting. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard. On Android with Gboard, open Gboard Settings > Languages > Add keyboard, choose a language and layout, then tap Done.
Add a language to the built-in iPhone keyboard
- Open Settings > General > Keyboard.
- Tap Keyboards > Add New Keyboard.
- Choose the language you want. Repeat these steps to add other keyboards.
Apple’s iPhone User Guide says adding another language keyboard also adds that language to Preferred Language Order. Some languages can automatically switch between the two languages you use most often, but this feature is not available for every language.
Switch languages while typing
In a text field, touch and hold the Emoji button or the Switch Keyboard key, then tap the keyboard you want to use.

Add a language to Gboard on Android
- Open an app with a text field and tap the field to display Gboard.
- Tap Gboard’s Settings icon, then choose Languages > Add keyboard.
- Select a language and the layout you want, then tap Done.
You can also add a language through Android settings: Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard > Gboard > Languages. Select the language and layout, then tap Done. Menu labels can vary by device and Android version.

Switch languages while typing
Touch and hold Gboard’s space bar to switch between configured languages.
Google notes that changing Gboard’s language does not change the Android device language. Some of the documented steps require Android 7.0 or later, and talk-to-text is not available for every language. See Google’s Gboard language instructions for Android.

If you use Gboard on iPhone or iPad
Gboard has its own language list, separate from the Apple keyboard list. In the Gboard app, go to Languages > Add language and choose a language. While typing, touch and hold the Globe key and select the language. Google says these settings do not change the iPhone or iPad’s language settings. Gboard for iPhone and iPad supports up to three languages at a time, according to Google’s Gboard instructions for iPhone and iPad.

If the steps do not match your phone
- Android uses a different keyboard: The Gboard path applies only if Gboard is installed and in use. Open the settings for the on-screen keyboard shown on your device and look for its language or layout options; labels vary by manufacturer and keyboard.
- You want to keep the phone’s menus in their current language: Adding a keyboard language in Gboard does not change the device language.
- You need a particular layout: On Gboard for Android, choose the layout as well as the language during setup.
- A feature is missing: Automatic switching on Apple’s keyboard and talk-to-text in Gboard are not available for every language.
