If Modern Warfare shows “Friend Request Sending Failed,” confirm your friend’s Activision ID and add them through the game’s Social menu. Activision documents the normal friend-add steps, but its support pages do not identify a cause or guaranteed fix for this specific error. Work through the checks below; if the request still fails, contact Activision Support with the details.
1. Confirm the Activision ID, then send the request in-game
For a cross-platform friend, Activision’s documented route is to add them by Activision ID. Ask your friend to read the ID from their account or game screen and confirm its spelling. The documented example is PlayerName#1234567, but Activision notes that some older Activision IDs do not have numbers after the player name. Don’t assume a numeric suffix is required; use the full ID your friend confirms.
- Open Social in Modern Warfare.
- On the Friends tab, select Invite Friends.
- Choose Enter Activision Account.
- Enter your friend’s confirmed Activision ID and send the request.
These labels and steps come from Activision’s Modern Warfare crossplay instructions, dated October 27, 2019; the current game interface may use different labels.

Activision says crossplay is enabled by default and can be checked at Options → Account. If you and your friend are on different platforms, confirm that crossplay is enabled. This is a relevant setting to verify, not a documented fix for the exact “Friend Request Sending Failed” message.

3. Review pending requests and blocked players
Modern Warfare’s Social menu supports accepting invitations, adding recently played players, and managing blocked players. Check the sent and received request tabs to see whether a request is already pending, and confirm that neither account is blocking the other. If you find an existing request, accept it where appropriate; if you find an accidental block, remove it only if you intend to allow contact.
Activision’s Modern Warfare in-game account registration and Social-menu guidance, dated September 15, 2021, describes these account and menu functions. Activision also says an Activision account is required for online play.

4. If the request still fails, contact Activision Support
The official pages cited above explain account and friend management, but do not document this specific failure state or a universal remedy. If the confirmed ID, request tabs, block list, and crossplay setting do not resolve it, report the exact message and include:

- Your platform and your friend’s platform.
- The Activision ID you entered, checked for spelling with your friend.
- Whether a sent or received request was already present and whether either account appeared in the blocked list.
- The menu steps you tried and the exact wording of the error.
Historical community posts are not a reliable substitute for current support guidance. A March 2020 Modern Warfare player said adding through the Companion app worked for them, while a November 2022 Modern Warfare II thread discussed a related “Player blocked” message. Those anecdotes involve different dates or game versions and do not establish that the app is currently available, that blocking causes this Modern Warfare error, or that either approach will fix it: 2020 report and 2022 report.
