You can add a visitor-facing dark-mode switch to a WPBakery page with a custom toggle element or a plugin that provides a dedicated WPBakery element. WordPress does not include one standard front-end switch for every site, and neither route guarantees that every theme component will recolor automatically. Choose an approach, configure its behavior and palette, then test both modes across your site before publishing.
Choose a way to add the switch
WPBakery’s tutorial describes two approaches: create a custom element for more control, or use a ready-made plugin element for a more direct setup. Neither changes the page’s underlying content or structure; the switch changes how the page is presented.

WPBakery’s tutorial identifies WP Dark Mode as an option. Its WordPress.org listing documents a dedicated switch element introduced in version 5.3.10, dated July 19, 2026; plugin features and availability can change. Add and configure a custom toggle element
WPBakery’s guide outlines a custom route using the WPBakery Element Builder GPT to generate and refine a “Dark Mode Toggle” element. Test generated code on a local or staging site, and ask a developer to review it before production if you are not comfortable assessing code.

- Generate and review the element. Describe the toggle you want in the Element Builder GPT, inspect the result, and refine it before activating it.
- Activate it and open the page. Edit an existing page with WPBakery. In the content-element window, add “Dark Mode Toggle.”
- Set the default and palette. Depending on the generated element version, settings may include a light, dark, or system default; system-preference detection; light and dark color skins; colors for backgrounds, text, links, buttons, and borders; switch design and size; alignment and spacing; and an extra CSS class. These are possible controls in this custom build, not standard settings on every WPBakery installation.
- Choose how preferences behave. System detection typically reads the browser’s
prefers-color-schemesetting. A visitor should still be able to select a different mode. Saving that choice for future visits or other pages depends on the implementation, so verify both behaviors rather than assuming they are included.
Set up the plugin route
If you prefer a ready-made element, use the plugin’s current instructions and verify its current WPBakery support in the WordPress.org listing. WPBakery’s tutorial says the plugin’s free version includes a dedicated WPBakery element, while the listing documents WPBakery support and the switch element’s release history. Because plugin interfaces and features may change, rely on the current listing and the controls shown in your installed version rather than assuming the custom-element settings above are available.
Check both modes before publishing
Test on a staging site when possible. A switch can change colors while leaving fixed-color theme rules and third-party elements untouched. WPBakery says it works with properly coded themes, but this is not a promise that every theme customization or element will adapt automatically; see its theme compatibility FAQ.

- Switch modes repeatedly, reload the page, and confirm whether the selected preference persists as intended.
- If system detection is enabled, change the device’s appearance preference and verify the page responds as expected.
- Inspect the desktop and mobile layouts in both modes: backgrounds, rows, columns, headings, body text, links, buttons and hover states, forms and placeholders, menus, cards, borders, and icons.
- Check logos and transparent images for visibility against both backgrounds, and look for flashes or unexpected color changes during navigation.
- Check keyboard focus and control labels. Adjust affected elements through their settings or targeted custom CSS.
Make dark mode readable and accessible
Dark mode is an alternative viewing mode, typically using darker backgrounds with lighter text and interface colors; a dark theme has a fixed dark appearance. It is not a complete accessibility fix. WPBakery’s tutorial notes that light text on dark backgrounds can appear blurry to some readers and that dark mode may be harder to read in bright surroundings. Ensure that both modes have readable contrast, visible keyboard focus, and a clearly labeled switch. Pay particular attention to form fields, fixed-color logos, images, and sections that may disappear or lose contrast.
