The ADATA Urban Tapsafe 2TB is worth considering if you regularly share a portable drive and want to control who can open it. Its NFC-and-app lock lets an owner grant read-only or read/write access, but it is not encryption: don’t use it to protect sensitive files from a determined attacker. You also pay for a feature that conventional external SSDs may not offer, while independent reviews report performance that varies by workload.
What the Urban Tapsafe 2TB offers
The Urban Tapsafe is a USB-C external solid-state drive available in 1TB and 2TB capacities. ADATA lists a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface rated at 20 Gbps, backward compatibility with USB 2.0, and sequential read and write speeds of up to 1,900 MB/s. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of the speed you will see on every computer. See ADATA’s product specifications.
Tom’s Hardware’s 2TB review lists a metal case, an integrated clip, and magnetic, replaceable face plates. The reviewed drive measures 2.70 × 1.42 × 0.76 inches (68.68 × 36.18 × 19.18 mm) and weighs 72.61 g. That review lists a five-year warranty; warranty coverage can vary by region, so confirm the terms where you buy.

The drive works as an ordinary external SSD before NFC authentication is enabled. To set up phone unlocking, install ADATA’s URBAN TAPSAFE app and add the drive. After authentication is configured, the drive locks when disconnected. When you reconnect it, open the app and tap your phone to the drive to unlock it. ADATA’s support materials and user guide describe the setup.

The owner can share access with up to nine additional users, assigning each read-only or read/write permission. According to Tom’s Hardware, invitees need the app and physical access to the drive for a QR-code-based setup. This arrangement is useful for a shared work drive or family files when you want to limit who can write or make changes.
What the lock does—and does not—protect
The NFC feature is access control, not file encryption. Tom’s Hardware reports that the process does not encrypt or decrypt files, and that ADATA makes no specific hardware-security claim. The review warns that someone able to disassemble the drive might access its contents.

That makes the Tapsafe a convenience and ordinary privacy feature, not a high-assurance security device. If you need protection against a determined attacker or require hardware encryption, choose a drive with an explicitly documented encryption feature instead.
How fast is it in practice?
ADATA advertises sequential read and write speeds up to 1,900 MB/s, and the interface is rated at 20 Gbps. To approach the advertised peak, the drive must be connected to a host port that supports 20 Gbps; a slower port limits throughput.

Tom’s Hardware initially saw inconsistent read-benchmark results on its review unit. After a secure erase and reformat, its results were more consistent with the drive’s ratings. The review judged performance adequate for mainstream large-file transfers, though not the fastest in its class. PCWorld’s September 11, 2026 review also noted variable read speeds with larger data sets and lower sustained-write performance. Taken together, these reviews suggest results depend on the workload and test conditions; they do not establish one speed for every user.
Compatibility checks before buying
ADATA lists Windows, macOS, Linux, and mobile use, but mobile devices need to support external SSD or OTG storage and supply sufficient power. The companion app’s Apple listing requires iOS 15.6 or later for iPhone. Check that the specific phone supports NFC, can run the app, and supports external storage; app availability and phone behavior can vary.

Price and buying trade-offs
Tom’s Hardware listed the 2TB model at $399.99 on Amazon when its review was published on August 30, 2026. That is a historical review-time price, not a current quote. The review described the Team Group PD20 2TB as substantially cheaper and the Crucial X10 as a performance alternative; check current prices and availability before comparing them.
Consider whether NFC sharing, the clip, and replaceable face plates justify any price premium for your use. If you do not need shared phone-managed access, compare conventional portable SSDs on current price, sustained performance, capacity, host-port compatibility, size, and warranty. A 20 Gbps drive offers little reason to pay extra if your main device cannot use that interface speed.
