The ADATA SC735 is best for people who value a very light drive and a built-in USB-C plug more than fast, sustained writes or a rugged-feeling shell. It weighs 13.6g, measures 55 × 28.5 × 12.1mm, and retracts its connector into the body, so there is no separate cable to carry. ADATA rates it for up to 1,050 MB/s reads and 1,000 MB/s writes, but those are peak sequential figures—not a promise of the speed you will see on every device or during a long transfer.
What the SC735 is—and who it suits
The SC735 is a compact external SSD with a retractable USB Type-C connector. Its strongest advantage is convenience: it can plug directly into a compatible USB-C port without a cable, and at 13.6g it adds very little weight to a travel or field kit. That makes it appealing for moving files between compatible devices, carrying a library of media, or keeping a lightweight backup drive close at hand.
It is a less obvious fit for workloads that regularly write hundreds of gigabytes in one go, or for professional use where a rigid-feeling enclosure is a priority. The headline speed does not describe how quickly a very large write will finish, and one independent review reported enclosure flex on its sample.

These specifications are from ADATA’s SC735 product page and its 2025 datasheet. ADATA says optimal performance requires a USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection and UASP support; host hardware, software and workload affect actual results. A USB 2.0 connection is supported, but it will not provide the drive’s rated 10Gbps interface performance.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How fast is it in real use?
Peak speeds are a ceiling
The 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write figures are maximum sequential ratings. They do not mean every computer, phone, cable-free connection or file transfer will run at those rates. The port and host must support the relevant USB speed, and performance also depends on the system and the kind of work being done. Small files, software overhead and other workload differences can all make a transfer unlike a best-case sequential benchmark.
Large writes are the key limitation
PCWorld’s review of a 2TB sample, published November 5, 2025, found that the drive exhausted its secondary cache before a 450GB write was complete. That test used PCWorld’s own test bench and methodology, including CrystalDiskMark and 48GB transfer and 450GB write tests; it is evidence about that sample and workload, not a guaranteed result for every unit. It does show why a peak write rating is a poor predictor for a single, very large continuous transfer. If that is a routine task, prioritize reviews and measurements of sustained writes for the exact drive you are considering.

Build and portability
The form factor is the SC735’s clearest practical differentiator. The plug retracts into the drive, avoiding a loose cable and making it easy to connect directly to a compatible USB-C host. ADATA described the design at launch as eliminating the need for external cables; that is the manufacturer’s description of the connector, not a claim that every device will accept a direct connection.
TechRadar praised the small form and connector convenience but described its reviewed sample’s casing as plastic-feeling and prone to flex. It also noted the absence of a lanyard loop. Those are reviewer observations, not proof that all units will fail, but they matter if the drive will be handled roughly or used in demanding field conditions. The drop-resistance claim is not a water- or dust-resistance rating: do not treat the SC735 as waterproof or dustproof.

Compatibility with computers, phones and consoles
Computer operating systems
ADATA’s 2025 datasheet lists Windows 10/11, macOS 13 or later (formatting required), and Linux Kernel 6 or later. It lists Android 13 or later for mobile use. ADATA’s global product page gives broader legacy operating-system minimums, so these sources do not establish one universal compatibility guarantee for every older host. Check the requirements for your particular device and operating-system version before relying on the drive.
Android phones and tablets
Android use depends on the phone or tablet supporting external SSD or OTG storage and providing adequate power. A USB-C socket alone does not guarantee that a device will mount or reliably power an external SSD. After copying files, ADATA recommends safely removing the drive to reduce the risk of data corruption.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series
ADATA lists PS5 and Xbox Series compatibility and says the drive can store games that do not fit on internal storage. Storage compatibility is not the same as being able to run every current-generation game directly from the external drive. Check the console maker’s current external-storage rules for the distinction between storing and playing games.

Does a new SC735 need formatting?
It may, depending on how the drive is prepared and which devices you need to use. Choose a file system that is supported by every intended host before copying important files. Formatting erases existing data, so check the drive’s contents first and consult the device makers’ current file-system guidance. ADATA’s general support material discusses formatting but names another model in its exFAT recommendation, so it should not be treated as a model-specific SC735 format instruction.

If a computer does not recognize it
- Try another USB port, preferably one that supports USB 3.2 Gen 2 if you want the highest possible performance.
- Check whether the drive appears in the operating system’s disk-management or storage utility; a drive that is detected but lacks a usable volume may need setup or formatting.
- For a phone, confirm external-storage/OTG support and adequate power rather than assuming the USB-C port guarantees compatibility.
ADATA’s support page also surfaces connection questions such as using an external SSD with a smart TV. TV support depends on the model’s USB and file-system capabilities; check the television’s manual rather than assuming the SC735 will be recognized.
Price and availability
Prices reported by reviewers are dated observations, not current universal prices. TechRadar listed UK/US prices of £54/$50 for 512GB, £79/$75 for 1TB and £129/$120 for 2TB. PCWorld listed $80 for 1TB and $150 for 2TB in its November 5, 2025 review. The 512GB option appeared in TechRadar’s price report, while ADATA’s global page and 2025 datasheet list 1TB and 2TB. Check the live regional listing, stock and exact SKU before purchase.
Verdict: buy it for convenience, not sustained-write speed
The SC735 makes sense when a built-in USB-C connector, very low weight and compact dimensions are more important than a robust-feeling enclosure or consistently fast performance through a huge write. Its rated speeds suit the headline appeal, but PCWorld’s 450GB test is a meaningful caution for users who regularly move large archives or video projects. For rough professional handling, consider whether the reviewed enclosure feel is acceptable; for cable-free everyday portability, the SC735’s design is the feature that sets it apart.
