An advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) is vehicle technology that helps with particular driving tasks. Depending on the feature, it may warn about a hazard, briefly apply braking or steering, or continuously assist with steering or speed. ADAS does not necessarily mean a car can drive itself: at Levels 0 through 2, the driver remains responsible for monitoring the road and operating the vehicle.
What does ADAS include?
ADAS is an umbrella term, not the name of one standardized feature. The U.S. Department of Transportation describes these systems as helping with tasks such as lane keeping, parking, collision avoidance, reducing blind spots, and maintaining a safe following distance. The systems can work in different ways:
- Warn: Forward collision warning or lane departure warning alerts the driver to a possible hazard or lane drift.
- Intervene briefly: Automatic emergency braking can act to help avoid or reduce the severity of a crash.
- Provide ongoing assistance: Adaptive cruise control can support speed and following distance; lane keeping assistance can provide steering support. Some systems combine steering and speed assistance.
These examples are not guarantees that a collision will be prevented, and similarly named features may behave differently from one vehicle to another.

How does ADAS relate to driving automation levels?
NHTSA describes Levels 0 through 2 in terms of how much assistance a system provides. At each of these levels, the driver monitors the driving environment and remains responsible.

The word ADAS is broader than a single automation level. USDOT uses it for assistance functions spanning Levels 0, 1, and 2. SAE’s J3016 taxonomy, by contrast, classifies sustained driving automation and excludes some momentary active-safety interventions, such as automatic emergency braking, because they do not perform driving tasks on a sustained basis. As a result, not every feature described as driver assistance fits neatly into a sustained automation level.
Is ADAS self-driving?
No. Assistance with steering, speed, or braking does not by itself make a vehicle self-driving. In particular, a Level 2 system may support both steering and speed while still requiring the driver to watch the road, understand what is happening, and remain responsible for the task. NHTSA identifies overreliance and the division of responsibility between driver and system as safety concerns.

Do you still have to pay attention when ADAS is on?
Yes, for Level 0 through Level 2 assistance. Keep your attention on driving rather than treating a warning or control feature as a substitute for monitoring. Know what the system can and cannot do, and be prepared to take over or respond when conditions require it. For the exact operating conditions, controls, and limitations of a feature in your car, consult that vehicle’s owner’s manual; names and behavior vary by manufacturer and model.
