Adaptive vertical sync usually means NVIDIA Adaptive VSync, a graphics-driver setting that switches conventional VSync on or off depending on whether a game is running above or below the display’s refresh-rate limit. It is not the same as VESA Adaptive-Sync or other variable refresh rate (VRR) technologies, which let a compatible display vary its refresh timing to follow the frames it receives.

What NVIDIA Adaptive VSync does

Conventional VSync coordinates frame presentation with a display’s fixed refresh cycle. When a game’s frame rate falls below the display’s refresh rate, VSync can contribute to stuttering; when frame delivery exceeds the refresh rate, turning VSync off can allow visible tearing. NVIDIA describes those trade-offs in its Adaptive VSync explanation.

Adaptive VSync is a conditional policy intended to balance those outcomes: VSync is disabled when the game falls below the refresh-rate cap, avoiding the forced VSync lock, and enabled when frame rate is faster than the display, helping limit tearing. NVIDIA’s Control Panel Help states: “Adaptive turns V-Sync On only when the frame rate is faster than the refresh rate.” See NVIDIA’s Manage 3D Settings reference.

Adaptive VSync, Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync, and VRR compared

The names are similar, but they describe different parts of the graphics chain. Adaptive VSync is a GPU-driver setting; Adaptive-Sync and HDMI VRR are display-interface capabilities; FreeSync is AMD’s branded technology that uses supported standards.

Term Where it operates What it does What to check
NVIDIA Adaptive VSync NVIDIA graphics-driver setting Applies conventional VSync conditionally based on frame rate relative to the display’s refresh rate. NVIDIA GPU, driver/control-panel support, and the game’s settings.
VESA Adaptive-Sync DisplayPort and Embedded DisplayPort interface standard Enables variable refresh rate, allowing display updates to match source content. VESA described the standard’s scope in its 2014 announcement. Support in the graphics hardware, display, and connection path.
AMD FreeSync AMD graphics and compatible display ecosystem AMD’s technology uses industry standards including DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync and HDMI Variable Refresh Rate to provide dynamic refresh rates. AMD says FreeSync requires compatible Radeon graphics and an AMD-certified display; check the exact model and supported range. See AMD’s FreeSync information.
HDMI VRR HDMI display connection A variable-refresh-rate capability that FreeSync can use alongside DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync. Confirm support for the specific GPU, display, port, and configuration; the term alone does not establish compatibility.

VESA’s Adaptive-Sync Display Compliance Test Specification is an open standard for front-of-screen VRR performance. VESA announced a major specification update published May 16, 2023; certification context does not by itself prove that a particular computer-and-monitor setup will work. See VESA’s 2023 update.

How to tell which feature you mean

  • If you are looking at a setting in NVIDIA Control Panel, “Adaptive” under V-Sync refers to NVIDIA Adaptive VSync.
  • If you mean that the monitor’s refresh timing changes to match game frame delivery, you mean display-based VRR, such as VESA Adaptive-Sync or HDMI VRR.
  • If a display is described as FreeSync, that is AMD’s technology and certification ecosystem; it is not a synonym for every Adaptive-Sync display. AMD explicitly notes that VESA AdaptiveSync certification does not necessarily equal AMD FreeSync certification.

What to check before relying on display VRR

Compatibility depends on the complete configuration, not just a label on the monitor. Check the exact GPU, monitor model, connection and port, required driver or software settings, certification, and the monitor’s supported VRR refresh-rate range. AMD’s FreeSync support information sets out its display requirements. A generic “Adaptive-Sync” label alone does not guarantee that a specific GPU, display, and connection will work together.
