Adaptive cruise control (ACC) adjusts a vehicle’s speed to maintain a driver-selected distance from a vehicle ahead. It can accelerate and brake, depending on the vehicle, but it does not take over driving: the driver must keep watching the road and be ready to intervene.
How adaptive cruise control works
The driver activates cruise control and sets a target speed. If the vehicle offers following-distance settings, the driver can also choose a gap. The system uses forward-facing sensors to detect a vehicle ahead and can slow down when that vehicle is moving more slowly or the gap narrows. When the path clears, it may accelerate toward the set speed. Toyota describes its system as automatically accelerating or decelerating to maintain the selected distance. Toyota’s operating overview explains the controls and notes that features vary by model.
The exact behavior depends on the vehicle. Some ACC systems support stop-and-go traffic; others may disengage or ask the driver to take over at low speeds. Speed thresholds, distance choices, alerts, and braking behavior are not universal, so consult the owner’s manual for the specific make, model, and year.
What adaptive cruise control does—and does not—control
ACC manages the vehicle’s speed and following distance, generally by controlling acceleration and braking. It does not necessarily steer, keep the vehicle centered in its lane, or perform other driving tasks. Lane-centering assistance is a separate feature, although a vehicle may offer it alongside ACC.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) classifies ACC as Level 1 driver assistance. Level 1 systems assist with either steering or acceleration and braking; Level 2 systems can assist with both, but still require the driver to remain attentive and responsible. ACC by itself does not mean a vehicle is self-driving. NHTSA’s overview of driver-assistance technologies explains these distinctions.
Does adaptive cruise control stop the car?
Some systems can brake, and some support stop-and-go traffic. Others may disengage or prompt the driver to take control at low speed. There is no single stop capability that applies to every vehicle, so check the manual for the car’s specific operating range and driver prompts.

Do not treat ACC as a collision-prevention guarantee. Toyota’s 2025 Highlander manual says its dynamic radar cruise control does not include functions that prevent or avoid collisions with vehicles ahead, and instructs the driver to take direct control when danger is possible. That warning is specific to that system, but the practical rule is broader: remain ready to brake or steer yourself.

Limits and safe use
Use ACC only under the conditions described in the vehicle’s manual. It is not a substitute for choosing a safe speed and gap for traffic, the road, and the weather. Toyota’s 2019 RAV4 Hybrid manual, for example, cautions that detection and distance control may not work correctly in some conditions and tells drivers to select speed with those factors in mind. The details differ by vehicle.

- Model Compatibility: Fits The Explorer models manufactured between the years 2011 and 2019 as specified in the product title.
- Part Number Match: Replaces component BT4Z9C888AB also listed as BT4Z-9C888-AB or SW-6821 for accurate identification during selection.
- Function Restoration: Serves as a replacement switch to restore standard cruise control adaptive functions to the vehicle system.
- Direct Replacement: Designed to match the equipment specification for the adaptive cruise control switch without modifying existing features.
- Application Scope: Intended solely for use as a functional substitute for the specific switch part named in the title.
Sensor visibility can also affect operation. A Volkswagen technical service document revised in March 2019 gives one implementation-specific example: ACC may become temporarily unavailable if the sensor’s view is limited by dirt or inclement weather, including heavy rain, snowfall, or ice on the sensor. This is not a universal list of limits for all vehicles.
Even when the system is active, keep monitoring the road and be prepared to intervene. Toyota’s 2025 Highlander manual cautions that its system is not a substitute for careful driving and does not remove the driver’s responsibility to assess danger.
