Adaptive driving beam (ADB) headlights reshape parts of a vehicle’s high-beam pattern to reduce light aimed at other traffic while keeping stronger illumination on other parts of the road. They do more than switch between high and low beams, and they are not the same as headlights that pivot into a turn.

How adaptive beam headlights work

ADB systems use sensors and control logic to identify occupied areas of the road, then adjust the beam to cast less light toward those areas and more light where traffic is not detected. The result is a moving, lower-intensity “shadow” around other vehicles while stronger high-beam illumination remains elsewhere. The exact implementation varies by vehicle.

The aim is to preserve more of the long-range visibility of high beams without directing as much light at drivers ahead or oncoming. The system manages glare by changing portions of the beam rather than turning the entire high beam off.

How ADB differs from other adaptive headlights

Lighting feature What it changes Primary purpose
Adaptive driving beam (ADB) Adjusts portions of the high-beam pattern around detected traffic. Reduce light directed at other road users while retaining stronger illumination elsewhere.
High-beam assist or automatic high beams Switches between high and low beams according to traffic or lighting conditions. Automate when the vehicle uses high or low beams.
Curve-adaptive headlights Pivots the beam toward the direction of travel, sometimes in response to steering and speed. Illuminate curves as the vehicle turns.

“Adaptive headlights” is often used loosely in consumer descriptions. Check the vehicle’s documentation to determine whether a feature is ADB, automatic high-beam switching, curve-adaptive lighting, or a combination.

What U.S. rules allow

In 2022, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration amended Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 to permit certification of ADB headlamps and establish performance requirements. NHTSA denied petitions for reconsideration of the rule in 2024. Permission to certify a system is not the same as a requirement that vehicles include it.

ADB had been available in Europe for more than a decade before the U.S. rule changed. U.S. requirements include functional restrictions that may affect how systems operate. Availability also changes over time: IIHS reported in a page updated in July 2026 that only a few manufacturers then offered ADB in the United States. Confirm the exact make, model year, trim, and market before assuming a particular vehicle has it. IIHS: Headlights; NHTSA’s 2022 final rule; NHTSA announcement; NHTSA’s 2024 response.

What the safety evidence shows

IIHS reports that glare from a vehicle equipped with ADB was significantly lower in its comparison than glare from an SUV with HID low beams and a sedan with curve-adaptive HID low beams. That is a specific comparative result, not proof that every ADB system eliminates glare in all conditions.

Some numerical findings discussed alongside ADB concern curve-adaptive lighting instead. In an experimental study, drivers using curve-adaptive HID headlights spotted a hard-to-see object on a dark, curvy road about one-third of a second earlier than with conventional fixed headlights. A study of model-year 2010 Mazda 3 vehicles found nighttime collision and property-damage-liability claim rates 10% and 15% lower, respectively, for vehicles with curve-adaptive HID lighting than for those with standard halogen lamps; daytime claims were unaffected. Those findings are not ADB results, and IIHS notes that it can be difficult to separate the effect of curve adaptivity from the type of lamp.

What to check on a vehicle

  • Look for the specific term “adaptive driving beam” in the manufacturer’s feature list or owner’s manual; “adaptive headlights” alone may refer to another lighting function.
  • Verify availability for the exact model year, trim, and sales market.
  • Read how the system operates, including any conditions, limits, or driver override instructions.
  • Do not assume a replacement bulb or generic retrofit kit can add ADB. The feature is a vehicle headlamp system, and compatibility depends on the vehicle and its equipment.
